We don't have months of repair history on this phone yet, so below is what the teardown found and what it means when yours needs fixing. The diagnostic is free: we tell you what's wrong, what it costs and whether the parts are in stock before any work starts.
In short: a faulty variable-aperture main camera means replacing the whole camera assembly, the USB-C port is a chore to reach, and the plastic display frame cracked in three of iFixit's four teardown units. The battery, by contrast, is straightforward to service, with a screwed-in tray and electrically releasable adhesive. Storage (NAND) now sits inside the logic-board sandwich, which makes data recovery more involved. Models sold in South Africa also carry a physical nano-SIM alongside eSIM according to Apple's South African specification, so we check which version you have before diagnosing any 'No service' fault.

6.3" ProMotion OLED screen
Ceramic Shield 2 glass over a 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED. Cracks, dead touch, lines or dark patches. The plastic display frame behind the glass can complicate the job, so we assess before we quote. Used original or new original displays only.
Camera Control and Action Button
Two buttons that take the knock in a side drop. Assessed individually.
Variable-aperture main camera
Per iFixit, a stuck aperture means replacing the whole camera assembly. The module is easy to swap; the part is the cost.
Ceramic Shield back glass
Cracked back glass, with the wireless charging coil and frame checked at the same time. In REWA's iOS 27 test the back glass no longer showed in Apple's pairing status.
USB-C, MagSafe and Qi2 charging
Loose or dead USB-C port, no wireless charging, or a phone that won't hold a charge. iFixit calls the port's flex route a chore, so allow for more labour.
Front camera and Face ID
Face ID runs through the 18MP Center Stage camera, so damage near the top of the phone can affect both.
Water damage
IP68 is a factory rating and isn't a lasting guarantee. Switch the phone off, don't charge it, and bring it in.
How the iPhone 18 Pro's variable-aperture camera works
Earlier iPhones use a fixed aperture: the opening that lets light onto the sensor never changes size. The iPhone 18 Pro's 48MP Fusion Main camera is different. Apple says its aperture varies from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4, adjusted by six laser-cut blades that open and close like the iris of an eye. Apple lists the variable aperture on the main camera only.
iFixit's teardown found the blades are a polymer composite roughly as thin as a human hair, and that they're moved by magnets. In photography terms, a wider opening lets in more light and gives a shallower depth of field, while a narrower one keeps more of the scene sharp. Apple pairs the camera with a new computational imaging pipeline.
What this means when it needs repair:
- The aperture is built into the main camera module, so an aperture fault means replacing the whole main camera assembly. iFixit concluded an aperture-only repair isn't realistic.
- The module itself is modular and easy to reach once the screen is off, so the cost is mainly the part.
- More moving parts means more ways for a camera to fail than on a fixed-aperture camera, according to iFixit.
- We confirm whether it's the module, the lens cover or something on the board at the free diagnostic, then quote in writing.
Face ID, the under-display IR camera and your screen
Apple says Face ID on the iPhone 18 Pro is enabled by TrueDepth technology in the 18MP Center Stage front camera, and that the Dynamic Island is smaller. What iFixit found inside is why the screen matters more on this phone: the infrared camera has moved beneath the display, toward the upper-left corner. The panel above it has a thinned pixel pattern (every other row missing) so the camera can see through it, the same under-display technique Samsung uses on its Galaxy Z Fold. The selfie camera and the IR dot projector stay in the central opening.
Because the IR camera now looks through the display, the screen in front of it is part of how Face ID works. That's why we handle iPhone 18 Pro screens differently from other iPhones:
- Used original and new original (OEM) displays only. We quote nothing else for the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max.
- No aftermarket or copy displays, and none will be quoted. With Face ID's infrared camera behind the panel, a non-original screen puts an unproven part in front of it, and we won't sell a screen we can't stand behind.
- Glass-only refurbishment is still available (replacing the cracked outer glass and keeping the original OLED), but it is more complex on this model because of the under-display IR camera, so we assess each one individually.
- Expect a longer inspection than on older iPhones. iFixit found the plastic display frame cracked or peeling in three of four teardown units, and REWA Technology's iOS 27 test showed an "Unknown Part" message when a display was fitted with its sensor flex. What's new on the iPhone 18 Pro — and what it means for repair
Everything in this section comes from Apple's published specifications, iFixit's teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max (20 September 2026, provisional 7/10 repairability score), REWA Technology's iOS 27 parts-swap test (19 September 2026) and press coverage of the teardown. The parts-pairing results are early: one repair-tool company testing one pair of phones. We'll add findings from our own workshop as we repair these phones. Nothing here is guesswork presented as experience.
📷 Variable-aperture camera: repaired as a whole assembly
Apple describes the 48MP Fusion Main camera as having a variable aperture from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4. iFixit's teardown found six polymer blades roughly as thin as a human hair, moved by magnets, and concluded very few repair enthusiasts will have the tools to take the mechanism apart. Its verdict: if the aperture sticks, you're replacing the entire main camera assembly. The upside is that the camera module itself is modular and easy to reach.
What it means for repair: A faulty main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro is realistically an assembly replacement, not a repair of the aperture inside it. We confirm at the free diagnostic whether it's the module, the lens cover or something on the board, then quote the part.
🔧 Opens from the front only. The battery is the easy part
iFixit reports the 18 Pro and Pro Max open from the front only, as the 17 Pro does, so reaching the battery means lifting the glued-down screen. Once inside, the battery tray is held by screws and the battery uses electrically releasable adhesive that lets go in about 90 seconds at 12 volts. The back glass comes off easily, but the only serviceable part behind it is the wireless charging coil.
What it means for repair: Battery, camera and board repairs all start with taking the screen off, so every internal repair carries a screen-damage risk that we plan for. For reference, iFixit measured 4,288 mAh (Pro) and 5,567 mAh (Pro Max) on the eSIM versions, and notes that physical-SIM versions have smaller batteries.
🔌 USB-C port: a step back from the 16 Pro
iFixit describes a long flex that runs up the side of the phone to the logic board, with screws and adhesive in the way, and calls getting the port out a chore. It rates this a regression from the more accessible 16 Pro design.
What it means for repair: A charging-port repair on the iPhone 18 Pro involves more labour than on the 16 Pro. If yours has stopped charging, we start with the cable, debris in the port and the charging circuitry at the free diagnostic, then quote before any work begins.
💾 Storage now sits inside the logic-board sandwich
According to iFixit, the A20 Pro chip has moved to the outside of the board sandwich with the RAM beside it, which helps cooling under Apple's larger vapor chamber, while the NAND storage is now inside the sandwich. iFixit says that makes recovery work that needs NAND access more involved.
What it means for repair: If your iPhone 18 Pro won't switch on and your photos aren't backed up, bring it in for a free diagnostic before trying anything yourself. Board-level repair and data recovery on this generation are more involved than on earlier Pros, and we'll tell you honestly what's possible before you commit.
📺 Display frame and Face ID: the screen is the riskiest repair
iFixit found the plastic display frame cracked or peeling in three of its four teardown units and couldn't pin down why. According to CNET's report on the teardown, Apple doesn't sell that frame separately, so a break can mean replacing the whole display module. Separately, the infrared camera used by Face ID has moved beneath the display toward the upper-left, with the selfie camera and dot projector still in the central opening.
What it means for repair: A screen replacement on the iPhone 18 Pro can change scope once the phone is open, which is why we quote after inspection. Because part of Face ID now sits under the display, damage to the top of the screen can affect Face ID as well as touch and picture. We check Face ID when we diagnose a cracked screen.
🔗 Parts pairing on iOS 27: back glass and cameras easier, the display harder
REWA Technology tested two iPhone 18 Pros running iOS 27 in a full parts swap. In Apple's Repair Assistant the display, battery, front camera and rear camera showed as 'Used' after configuration, and the rear camera no longer needed calibration afterwards. The back glass showed no configuration status at all, which suggests it is no longer part of the pairing system, and the battery, enclosure and front camera behaved as they did on iOS 26. The display was different: swapping it together with its sensor flex cables failed configuration and showed an 'Unknown Part' message, and swapping the display alone passed configuration but the message returned once the sensor flex was installed.
What it means for repair: A back-glass repair and a rear-camera swap look more straightforward than on earlier models, while a screen replacement on the iPhone 18 Pro may show a parts message that earlier iPhones did not. This is early testing on one pair of phones and REWA says it will keep testing, so we'll tell you what to expect at the free diagnostic and update this page as iOS changes.
📶 SIM tray or eSIM-only: it depends where your phone was sold
Apple's South African specification lists a physical nano-SIM plus eSIM for the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple's US and Nigerian specifications list dual eSIM only, with no physical SIM. iFixit also notes that physical-SIM versions have smaller batteries, so an imported phone can be a different phone inside from one bought locally.
What it means for repair: If your phone has a tray, SIM reader and 'No SIM' faults are repairs we can assess. If it's an eSIM-only import there is no tray to fault, and 'No service' is traced through the radio and board. eSIM profiles live on the phone itself, so replacing the logic board (rather than repairing it) would mean your network re-issuing your eSIM. Before any repair, make sure you can re-download your eSIM from your network.
🌡 Aluminium unibody and a bigger vapor chamber
The iPhone 18 Pro has an aluminium unibody, a Ceramic Shield back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, with a next-generation vapor chamber that Apple says has three times the surface area of the previous Pro generation's.
What it means for repair: Like the 17 Pro before it, the frame is aluminium: light and good at shedding heat, but it marks and dents more readily than titanium does. A case is sensible. See what we've seen on the iPhone 17 Pro for the same frame material.

Does the iPhone 18 Pro have a SIM tray?
It depends on where the phone was sold. Apple's South African specification lists a nano-SIM plus eSIM, while Apple's US and Nigerian specifications list dual eSIM only, with no physical SIM. Check the model number under Settings, General, About against Apple's specification for your country. If your phone is eSIM-only there is no tray to repair, and it's worth making sure you can re-download your eSIM from your network before any repair.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro still water resistant after a crack or repair?
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro IP68, which means up to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes in lab conditions. A cracked screen, cracked back glass or a previous repair can compromise that, and Apple describes water resistance as not permanent. If your phone has been dropped or opened, keep it away from water.
