How we do it
A cracked or unresponsive iPhone screen is the most common repair we perform — and one where the choice of replacement part matters more than any other. iPhone displays are calibrated at the factory to Apple's specifications: colour accuracy, True Tone response, peak brightness, and anti-reflective coating. iAssist stocks OEM pulled displays (original Apple panels removed from other iPhones), OEM brand new displays with full chip transfer, and aftermarket GX copies for budget repairs. We explain the difference before you decide.
From iPhone X onwards every screen replacement requires care around the TrueDepth camera and Face ID sensor. From iPhone 15 onwards, displays are cryptographically paired to the logic board — chip transfer during replacement takes 2–3 hours but prevents the 'Important Display Message' and preserves True Tone. We perform this transfer on every applicable model as standard.
Cracked glass — display still works
Most common presentation. Glass fractured from a drop, display intact. OEM pulled or glass-only refurbishment is the most cost-effective path.
Unresponsive or partial touch
Touch layer damaged by impact or flex cable failure. Manifests as a dead zone, no touch at all, or ghost touches. Screen replacement resolves in most cases.
Black or green lines on screen
OLED damage from direct impact. Lines indicate the OLED layer itself is fractured — glass-only repair not possible, full replacement required.
No display — touch still responds
Backlight or display flex failure. Often repairable without full screen replacement. Assessed under magnification before quoting.
Screen lifting at the edge
Battery swelling pushing the display off from inside, or adhesive failure. Requires battery and screen assessment together.
Important Display Message warning
Appears after repair at another shop without chip transfer. We perform transfer on your existing display in most cases — no full replacement needed.

My iPhone screen is cracked but still works — do I need to repair it now?
Not urgently, but the crack weakens the glass structurally. The next drop is far more likely to shatter the panel beneath. Repairs cost more once the LCD or OLED cracks. We recommend repair within a few weeks of cracking.
What is the difference between a pulled original, new, and GX copy screen?
Pulled original: used Apple screen, correct colour calibration, slight marks. New: new aftermarket OLED or LCD. GX copy: budget option, lower colour accuracy. We discuss all options and you choose — all carry our 6-month warranty.
Why is screen repair on iPhone 15 and newer more expensive?
Parts pairing from iPhone 15 onwards means the display is cryptographically linked to the device. We spend 2–3 hours transferring paired components from your original screen to prevent the 'Important Display Message.' That labour is part of every correctly performed 15-series screen replacement.
Can iPhone screen glass be replaced separately without the whole display?
Yes — on OLED models (iPhone X onwards), glass-only refurbishment is available where the OLED panel beneath is undamaged. On LCD models it depends on separation quality. We assess before recommending.
Does iAssist offer same-day iPhone screen repair in Johannesburg?
Yes — most screen replacements completed same-day at our Silvamonte centre. iPhone 15 and newer require 2–3 hours for component transfer. We confirm timing at booking.
Will my Face ID still work after a screen replacement at iAssist?
Yes. We are careful to preserve TrueDepth components during every screen replacement. On 12 series we work under microscope given the earpiece/Face ID connection.
My iPhone screen has gone green — is that a crack or a screen fault?
If no physical damage: likely an OLED defect. iPhone 12 series shows green tint from a known OLED characteristic. iPhone 14 Pro develops green/yellow from AB adhesive failure. Screen replacement resolves both.
How long does iPhone screen repair take?
iPhone 8–14: 30–60 minutes. iPhone 15 and newer: 2–3 hours (component transfer included). iPhone 17 Pro: allow additional time for safe front-opening disassembly.
