Common iPhone 11 repairs we see
The most frequent faults we diagnose and repair on the iPhone 11. Bring it in for a free diagnostic and we'll tell you exactly what's needed before any work begins.
Battery degradation
At 5–6 years, most iPhone 11 batteries are well below Apple's 80% threshold. Performance throttling and random shutdowns are common.
Charging port wear
Six years of daily Lightning plugging wears the port pins. Cables that used to click in now fall out or charge intermittently.
LCD screen failure
The LCD on the iPhone 11 is prone to touch issues and backlight faults with age — especially after drops that don't crack the glass.
Water seal degradation
The IP68 seal degrades significantly after 5+ years. Moisture can now enter through areas that were sealed when new.
Rear camera faults
Rear camera modules are showing increased failure rates at this age — blurring, black screen, or rattling OIS.
Charging IC faults
The Tristar charging IC on iPhone 11 is starting to fail in devices of this age — presenting as stuck at 1% or erratic battery percentage.

Known issues on the iPhone 11 — read before booking
⚠ Battery degradation — critical at 6 years
At six years old, the iPhone 11 series battery is the single most common repair we see on these devices. Six years of daily charge cycles leaves most batteries well below Apple's 80% service threshold — and many significantly below that. At this level of degradation, iOS performance throttling is active, the device feels noticeably slower, and battery life may be measured in hours rather than a full day.
Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Below 80% is Apple's service recommendation. Below 70% — common on heavily used 6-year-old devices — the device may shut down unexpectedly at 20–30% charge, charge slowly, or generate significant heat during charging.
Battery replacement on the iPhone 11 series is the single best-value repair available — restoring full performance, removing throttling, and extending daily life dramatically. Same-day replacement available at our Silvamonte centre.
⚠ Touch failure — Apple Display Module Replacement Programme
Apple issued an official Display Module Replacement Programme specifically for the iPhone 11 addressing a known issue where the touchscreen stops responding to input — not from physical damage but from a manufacturing defect in a batch of display modules. The screen appears normal but does not register touch at all, or registers it very inconsistently.
Check your eligibility: Apple's programme ran for a specific period after the fault was identified. Given that the iPhone 11 is now 6 years old, many devices will be outside the official programme window — but understanding the cause of the fault matters. If your iPhone 11's touchscreen has failed without any physical impact, this manufacturing defect is the likely cause, and screen replacement resolves it.
We see this regularly on iPhone 11 units. Bring it in for a free diagnostic — we confirm whether it is the display module or another cause before quoting any repair.
⚠ Backlight failure — inductor L5652 high failure rate on iPhone 11
The iPhone 11 has a documented high failure rate on a specific backlight circuit component — inductor L5652 on the logic board. When this inductor fails, the backlight circuit loses power and the screen appears completely black — even though the LCD panel and touch circuitry are still functional.
How to identify a backlight fault vs a dead screen: Shine a bright torch at the LCD at close range in a dark room. If you can faintly see the iOS interface (icons, lock screen) with no backlight illuminating it, the backlight circuit has failed — not the LCD panel itself. The screen is working; it just has no light behind it.
The repair: L5652 is removed under microscope and replaced with a new inductor of the correct specification. The shielding cover above it must be removed first, making this a precise but achievable board-level repair. We perform this regularly on iPhone 11 units.
If your iPhone 11 screen is completely black but you can still hear calls and notifications, and the phone wakes up when you press the side button — this is almost certainly L5652 backlight inductor failure. Bring it in for a free diagnostic.
⚠ Hydra charging IC failure — Lightning charging fault at this age
The iPhone 11 series uses the Hydra IC (the successor to the Tristar U2 chip used on earlier models) to manage all Lightning charging communication, USB authentication, and power delivery. After six years of daily use — particularly if cheap, non-MFi certified Lightning cables have been used — the Hydra IC fails at a significant rate on this generation.
Symptoms of Hydra IC failure:
- "This accessory may not be supported" with Lightning cables that worked previously
- Won't charge at all — cable plugged in, nothing happens, no charging icon
- Won't charge on Lightning but charges wirelessly — this is 80% Hydra IC, 20% charging port
- Doesn't appear in iTunes / Finder when plugged into a computer
- Very slow charging — draws minimal current despite a working cable and adapter
- Overheating near the Lightning port during charging attempts
- Won't turn on at all — in severe Hydra failure, the phone cannot boot because the Hydra IC manages I2C data lines that the backlight driver and bootloader depend on
Cause: Cheap, uncertified Lightning cables — particularly cables bought at petrol stations, market stalls, or bundled with non-Apple accessories — do not include the correct E75 authentication chip that Apple's Hydra IC expects. Without this handshake, the unfiltered current from the charger reaches the Hydra IC directly, causing progressive damage and eventual failure. A single power surge through a cheap cable can kill the IC immediately.
This is a micro-soldering repair — the Hydra IC is removed under microscope and replaced. We perform this regularly on the iPhone 11 series. Free diagnostic before any work is quoted.
⚠ TrueDepth camera damage — very common on iPhone 11 series, specialist repair
TrueDepth camera damage and Face ID failure is one of the most common iPhone 11 and 11 Pro repairs we see. The TrueDepth system comprises multiple components — dot projector, infrared (IR) camera, flood illuminator, and earpiece/sensor flex cable — and any one of them failing produces the same result: Face ID unavailable.
How iAssist repairs TrueDepth camera faults — JCID tag on flex: We use the JCID tag method on the flex cable to repair TrueDepth camera faults on the iPhone 11 series. This specialist technique reads and writes the authentication data associated with the TrueDepth components, allowing the Face ID system to be restored after flex cable damage or component replacement — without the need for an original paired donor assembly. If the repair is viable, Face ID is fully restored to normal operation.
When the JCID method cannot fix it — IR camera failure: If the infrared (IR) camera itself has failed, no flex repair or JCID tag method can restore Face ID. The IR camera on the iPhone 11 series is cryptographically paired to the device at the factory — it cannot be swapped from another phone or replaced with a new unit. If the IR camera is the fault, Face ID cannot be recovered on that device. We diagnose this specifically during our TrueDepth assessment and tell you clearly before charging anything.
Price: R1,500 — if the fault is repairable via JCID flex tag, across all iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max models. If the IR camera is confirmed as the fault and Face ID cannot be recovered, there is no charge for the diagnostic.
If your iPhone 11 lost Face ID after a screen replacement at another shop, or if it has gradually stopped working — bring it in for a free TrueDepth diagnostic. We assess, confirm whether it is repairable, and quote before any work begins.
⚠ No SIM / No Service — Transceiver IC fault
iPhone 11 models are increasingly presenting with baseband and No SIM faults at this age. The most common board-level cause is failure of the Transceiver IC (XCVR_K — PMB5765) on the logic board. This chip manages cellular radio transmission and reception. When it fails, the iPhone shows "No SIM Installed" despite a working SIM, or loses all cellular service permanently.
Additional causes include the inductor FL8442 at the bottom of the logic board — located near the upper antenna connector and very easily damaged during disassembly. If No SIM appeared immediately after a repair (screen replacement, battery replacement), FL8442 damage during that repair is the likely cause.
Both are micro-soldering repairs. We diagnose the exact fault before quoting — free assessment, quote in writing before any work begins.
⚠ Random rebooting every 3 minutes — missing sensor panic, R250 diagnostic
One of the most common iPhone 11 repairs we see — and one of the most misdiagnosed. The iPhone 11 reboots every 2–3 minutes on a precise timer because thermalmonitord (Apple's thermal monitoring daemon) loses contact with a required sensor. When it cannot get a sensor check-in within the timeout window, the OS triggers a restart. The panic log entry reads:
userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from thermalmonitord — Missing sensor(s): mic2
or
userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from thermalmonitord — Missing sensor(s): Prs0
What each missing sensor means:
-
Missing sensor: mic2 → Power button / side button flex
The secondary microphone (mic2) is located on the power button flex cable. When this flex is damaged — from a drop to the right side, a back glass repair, or physical tweezers marking the cable during disassembly — the mic2 sensor disappears and triggers the 3-minute reboot. The power button itself often continues to work even when mic2 is missing, which misleads technicians into thinking the flex is fine. OEM pull part required — cheap aftermarket power flexes are frequently missing the mic2 sensor entirely. -
Missing sensor: Prs0 → Charging port flex
Prs0 is the barometric pressure sensor (air pressure sensor) located on the charging port flex at the bottom of the iPhone 11. The flex is exposed behind the back glass and is easily damaged by drops, cracked back glass, or by a laser machine during back glass repair if the stencil is not perfectly aligned. Damaged or disconnected charging port flex causes the Prs0 sensor to disappear and triggers the 3-minute cycle.
When both sensors are missing simultaneously (mic2 + Prs0): Both the power flex and charging port flex have failed. This is common after a back glass repair where both flexes run along the back glass and are exposed to laser or physical damage. Replace the charging port flex first — if Prs0 resolves, test for mic2 separately.
Board-level escalation — sandwich split: If replacing both flexes with confirmed OEM parts does not resolve the reboot, the fault has escalated to the logic board. The iPhone 11 uses a two-layer sandwich board. If the mic2 I2C lines on the upper board have ripped pads or shorted capacitors (C7708 / C7709 — 56pF on the SCL/SDA lines to ground), the sensor cannot communicate even with a perfect flex cable. This requires sandwich board separation, pad inspection under microscope, and reball — a more involved repair than flex replacement.
How to find your panic log: Settings → Privacy → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data → files starting with "panic-full" → open most recent file → search for "Missing sensor" to identify which component is at fault. Tools like PanicFull.com allow you to upload the log file for automated analysis.
R250 diagnostic: We read the panic log, identify the missing sensor, and test with a known-good OEM flex before recommending any replacement. Cheap aftermarket flexes frequently lack the sensors entirely and will not resolve the reboot — OEM pull parts only. The R250 diagnostic fee is credited against the repair cost.
A software restore does nothing for a thermalmonitord hardware bootloop — the sensor must be physically present and communicating. If your iPhone 11 has already been restored and is still rebooting every 3 minutes, bring it in for a panic log diagnostic.
⚠ NAND storage failure — stuck in iTunes / DFU mode, P15 programmer repair
iPhone 11 series devices are coming in regularly with NAND-related failures — and this is one of the most mishandled repairs in the industry. The NAND flash storage chip has a finite number of read and write cycles. At six years of daily use — particularly on devices that were heavily used for photos, apps, and frequent iOS updates — the NAND chip develops worn sectors, bad blocks, and degraded read/write speeds that cause the device to fail in ways that look like software problems but are not.
What many shops get wrong: When an iPhone 11 is stuck in iTunes or DFU mode and restore keeps failing, the most common response at general repair shops is to repeatedly attempt DFU restores — sometimes charging for a "software repair" — without ever diagnosing the underlying hardware cause. A NAND failure cannot be resolved by any software restore. The restore fails because the NAND chip cannot complete the write process reliably. Attempting more restores does not fix this and wastes the customer's time and money.
Common symptoms of NAND failure on the iPhone 11 series:
- Stuck in iTunes / recovery mode — device shows the USB cable and iTunes/Finder logo. Restore starts but fails with error codes 4013, 9, 14, or 21. Progress bar begins then the restore aborts.
- DFU restore loop — device enters DFU mode, restore begins, fails with the same error code every attempt.
- Extremely slow performance — the device is inexplicably sluggish even after a battery replacement. App launches take 30–60 seconds. iOS feels unresponsive. The NAND is failing to serve read requests at normal speed.
- Bootloop that software cannot fix — device restarts continuously; no amount of restoring resolves it.
The repair — NAND replacement using the P15 programmer: We use the P15 NAND programmer to replace and correctly program the NAND chip on the iPhone 11 series. This specialist tool reads and writes the device's unique identifier data — serial number, Wi-Fi MAC address, and baseband information — from the original NAND and programs it into the replacement chip. Without correct programming via a tool like the P15, the replacement NAND will not allow the device to activate. This is the difference between a properly executed NAND replacement and a device that restores but cannot connect to Apple's servers.
Storage upgrade to 256GB — recommended when replacing NAND: Since the board is already open and the NAND micro-soldering work is being performed, we strongly recommend upgrading the storage to 256GB at the same time. The NAND chip is the primary cost — upgrading the capacity adds minimal cost relative to the total repair while giving the device a fresh chip with maximum remaining write cycles and significantly more storage. Many iPhone 11 series devices came in 64GB or 128GB configurations where storage was already a limitation.
If your iPhone 11 is stuck in iTunes or DFU mode and restore keeps failing — this is almost certainly a NAND issue, not a software problem. Bring it in for a free board-level diagnostic. We assess the NAND, discuss the repair and 256GB upgrade option, and quote before any work begins.

Why does my iPhone 11 restart every 3 minutes and what actually causes it?
The iOS thermal monitor (thermalmonitord) reboots the device every 3 minutes when it loses contact with a required sensor. Check the panic log: Settings → Privacy → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data → panic-full file. 'Missing sensor(s): Prs0' = charging port flex. 'Missing sensor(s): mic2' = power button flex. We read this before replacing anything.
My iPhone 11 screen is completely black but I can hear calls and notifications — what is that?
Almost certainly the backlight circuit — specifically inductor L5652 on the logic board, which has a documented high failure rate on the iPhone 11. To confirm: shine a bright torch at the screen in a dark room. If you can faintly see the iOS interface, the LCD is fine but the backlight has failed. This is a micro-soldering repair, not a screen replacement.
Can Face ID be repaired on the iPhone 11?
In many cases yes — we use the JCID tag on flex method to restore Face ID where the fault is a repairable component, for R1,500. If the IR camera itself has failed, Face ID cannot be recovered. We always diagnose the specific component before recommending any repair. No charge if the IR camera means it's unrecoverable.
My iPhone 11 won't charge on Lightning but wireless charging works fine — which part has failed?
~80% of the time it's the Hydra charging IC on the logic board — damaged by cheap, non-certified Lightning cables. ~20% is the Lightning port itself. Free diagnostic before any work. Use Apple MFi-certified cables only.
My iPhone 11 is stuck in iTunes mode and restore keeps failing with error 4013 — is that the NAND?
Yes, almost certainly. Error 4013 on a 6-year-old iPhone 11 during repeated restore attempts is NAND flash storage failure. The chip is worn and can't complete iOS installation. Software restores will always fail. We replace the NAND using the P15 programmer and recommend upgrading to 256GB — the board is already open.
Is it worth replacing the battery on an iPhone 11?
Absolutely — the A13 chip still handles everyday tasks well. Battery replacement removes throttling, restores full daily performance, and extends useful life by 2–3 years. At 6 years old most iPhone 11 batteries are well below 80%. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Same-day replacement at our Silvamonte centre.
My iPhone 11 Face ID says 'Move iPhone Higher or Lower' and won't set up — is that fixable?
Usually yes. This message typically indicates the dot projector has failed or the earpiece sensor flex is damaged. If the flex is the issue, repair restores Face ID. If the dot projector itself has failed, Face ID cannot be recovered — it's paired at the factory. We diagnose the specific component first. R1,500 if fixable via JCID method.
My iPhone 11 touchscreen stops responding then comes back — screen or board?
Most likely the display connector or the connector on the logic board. Try a force restart first (Volume Up, Volume Down, hold Side Button). If the problem persists after a screen replacement, there's a board-level signal issue. Bring it in for a free diagnostic — we test connector integrity before recommending any repair.
