Nintendo Switch Repairs Johannesburg

Nintendo Switch Repairs Johannesburg — Switch 2, OLED, Switch & Lite

A Switch lives a harder life than any other console. It gets thrown in school bags, dropped on tiled floors, charged on whatever cable is closest and handed to the youngest player in the house. So the faults we see are different too: Joy-Cons that drift, screens that crack, consoles that stop charging after a cheap dock, and game cards that suddenly can't be read. We repair every Switch model at component level in Silvamonte. Pick your Switch below to see what usually goes wrong with it and what it costs to fix.

Silvamonte, Johannesburg & nationwide. Free diagnostic. 6-month warranty on every repair.

Which Nintendo Switch do you have?

Tap your Switch to jump straight to its common faults and starting prices. Not sure? Open the guide below the cards.

Not sure which Switch you have? Check the back of the console

Turn the console over. The model number and the serial number are printed along the bottom edge of the back (on the original and OLED you may need to look under the kickstand area). The first three letters of the serial number tell you exactly which Switch you have:

Serial XAW…Original Switch, 2017 (model HAC-001) — see Switch repairs Serial XKW…Switch with improved battery, 2019 (model HAC-001(-01), red box) — see Switch repairs Serial XJW…Switch Lite (model HDH-001) — see Switch Lite repairs Serial XTW…Switch OLED (model HEG-001) — see Switch OLED repairs

Switch 2: the obvious giveaway is size — a much bigger 7.9-inch screen, Joy-Con 2 controllers that attach magnetically instead of sliding down rails, and an extra C button on the right Joy-Con. See Switch 2 repairs.

On screen: System Settings → System → Serial Information. Still unsure? WhatsApp us a photo of the back.

Nintendo Switch 2 repair

Released June 2025 · 7.9-inch screen · magnetic Joy-Con 2

The Switch 2 is new enough that most are still under Nintendo's warranty, so check that first. For accidental damage — a cracked screen, a broken Joy-Con 2 or a console that stopped charging — we assess it for free and quote in writing. Replacement parts for the Switch 2 are still limited and expensive, so every Switch 2 repair is priced individually rather than from a fixed price list.

What we see most on this model:

  • Cracked screen from drops
  • Joy-Con 2 stick drift or damaged magnetic connectors
  • Charging faults from third-party chargers and docks

Nintendo Switch OLED repair

Model HEG-001 · 7-inch OLED screen

The OLED's screen is gorgeous and also the most expensive Switch part to replace, because the OLED panel and glass are bonded together and replaced as one. Its wide kickstand and new dock fixed some of the original's weak points, but the charging and video chips on the board are as sensitive to dodgy third-party docks and chargers as they were on the original Switch.

What we see most on this model:

  • Cracked OLED screen from a drop
  • Joy-Con drift
  • Not charging after a third-party dock or charger
  • No picture on the TV through the dock
  • Game card slot not reading

Nintendo Switch repair (original & 2019 battery model)

Model HAC-001 and HAC-001(-01)

The original Switch is the one most families have, and after years of handheld play it's usually the Joy-Cons, the screen or the charging that gives up. On this model the touch glass and the LCD underneath are separate parts, so a cracked-but-working screen is often a cheaper fix than people expect. It's also the model most affected by cheap third-party docks: when one sends the wrong voltage, it can take out the charging chip or the chip that sends video to the TV.

What we see most on this model:

  • Joy-Con drift and Joy-Cons not detected on the rails
  • Cracked touch glass or damaged LCD
  • Won't charge or turn on after using a non-Nintendo dock or charger
  • No picture on the TV in the dock
  • Fan noise and short battery life on 2017 models

Nintendo Switch Lite repair

Model HDH-001 · handheld only

The Switch Lite has its controls built into the console, which changes what stick drift means: you can't just swap a Joy-Con, so the console has to be opened to replace the stick. That's a routine repair for us. It's also the Switch most likely to belong to a younger player, so cracked screens and damaged charging ports are common — the Lite charges and plays off the same USB-C port, so that port gets a lot of wear.

What we see most on this model:

  • Stick drift on the built-in sticks
  • Cracked screen
  • Loose or damaged USB-C charging port
  • Battery not holding charge

Joy-Con repair

Original Joy-Con (Switch, OLED) · Joy-Con 2 on assessment

Joy-Con drift is the most famous Switch fault. The analogue stick uses a small sensor that wears with use, dust gets in, and eventually the stick registers movement you're not making. We replace the stick module, or upgrade it to a Hall Effect stick that uses magnets instead of rubbing contacts, so it doesn't wear out the same way. If you have two drifting Joy-Cons, bring both. What we see most on this model:

  • SL/SR or shoulder buttons not responding
  • Joy-Con not detected when attached to the console

Common Nintendo Switch faults — what's usually behind them

Joy-Con drift

Your character walks off on their own, the camera keeps turning, or menus scroll by themselves. That's wear inside the stick module, sped up by dust and enthusiastic play. Recalibrating in System Settings → Controllers and Sensors can help for a while, but once the sensor is worn the real fix is a new stick. On the Switch Lite the sticks are built in, so the console itself is opened.

Cracked or dead screen

On the original Switch, the touch glass and the LCD are separate. If the picture is fine under the cracks, often only the glass needs replacing. On the Switch OLED, the glass and OLED panel are bonded together and replaced as a single part, which is why OLED screens cost more. The Switch Lite has its own smaller screen assembly.

Won't charge or won't turn on

First, leave it on the official Nintendo charger for at least an hour — a fully flat battery can take a while to show the charging icon — then hold the power button for 15 seconds. If that does nothing, the usual causes are a damaged USB-C port, or the charging and power-management chips on the board.

Those chips are the parts most often damaged by cheap third-party docks, car chargers and non-standard USB-C chargers. We replace them at component level rather than replacing the whole board. USB-C port from R850 · charging/power IC repair from R1,200.

Works in handheld, but no picture on the TV

If your Switch plays fine in your hands but shows nothing on the TV when docked, check the dock's power and HDMI cables and try another TV input. If the problem started after using a different dock, the video chip on the Switch's board has usually failed. It converts the console's output into a TV signal through the USB-C port, so the console works perfectly in handheld mode while TV output is dead.

The Switch has no HDMI port of its own — the HDMI is on the dock — so a 'Switch HDMI repair' is almost always this chip. Video IC repair from R1,100.

"Couldn't read the game card"

When cartridges stop being detected, it's usually the game card slot: bent pins from a card pushed in at an angle, dirt, or a worn reader. Try a second game card first — if one card works and another doesn't, the card is the problem, not the console. Slot repairs are quoted after a free diagnostic.

Battery drains fast, console runs hot or the fan is loud

2017 Switch models have a smaller battery life to begin with, and after years of daily charging every Switch battery loses capacity. A loud fan or a hot console in the dock usually means dust in the fan and dried thermal paste. Battery replacement from R850 · fan & thermal service from R650.

Why repair your Switch instead of replacing it

Repair at iAssist

  • Joy-Con drift from R400, most console repairs under R1,500
  • Keep your console and everything installed on it
  • Component-level repair of charging and video chips
  • Free diagnostic and a written quote first
  • 6-month warranty on parts and labour

Buying new

  • A new pair of Joy-Cons costs more than a drift repair
  • A new Switch OLED costs several thousand rand more than most repairs
  • Save data needs Nintendo Switch Online or a manual transfer
  • A fixable console goes to landfill

Before you bring it in

Save data: Switch save data lives on the console itself, not the microSD card. If you have Nintendo Switch Online, cloud save backup is probably already on — check before the repair.

Docks and chargers: if the fault started right after you used a new dock or charger, tell us, and don't use it again until we've checked it.

Parental controls and accounts: you don't need to give us your Nintendo account password.

Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

Send a photo of the back of your Switch (the serial number is printed there) and a one-line description of the fault — we'll reply with a starting price.

How a Nintendo Switch repair works at iAssist

1. Free diagnostic

We test charging, screen and touch, both Joy-Con rails, TV output through the dock, the game card slot and the fan, and find the actual failed part — not just the symptom.

2. Written quote

You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.

3. Component-level repair

Charging and video chips are replaced under a microscope rather than swapping the whole board — which is why it costs a fraction of a new console.

4. Tested before hand-over

Every repaired Switch is charged, docked and played in handheld and TV mode before it goes back to you, with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

Nintendo Switch repair — frequently asked questions

How much does Joy-Con drift repair cost?

Joy-Con stick drift repair starts from R400 per Joy-Con. A Hall Effect stick upgrade, which uses magnets so it doesn't wear out the same way, starts from R650 per Joy-Con. On the Switch Lite the sticks are built into the console, and repairs start from R450 per stick.

How much is a Nintendo Switch screen replacement?

Original Switch screen repairs start from R950, Switch Lite screens from R1,200 and Switch OLED screens from R2,500. The OLED panel and glass are bonded together, so they're replaced as one part. Switch 2 screens are quoted after a free assessment. Your exact price is confirmed in writing before any work starts.

Which Switch do I have?

Look at the serial number on the back of the console. XAW is the 2017 original Switch, XKW is the 2019 improved-battery Switch, XJW is the Switch Lite and XTW is the Switch OLED. The Switch 2 has a much larger 7.9-inch screen, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers and a C button on the right Joy-Con.

My Switch stopped charging after I used a different dock. Can it be fixed?

Usually, yes. Cheap third-party docks and chargers can damage the charging and power-management chips on the Switch's board. We replace the failed chip at component level, from R1,200. A damaged USB-C port on its own starts from R850. Stop using that dock or charger until we've had a look.

My Switch works in handheld but not on the TV. What's wrong?

If the dock and its cables are fine, the video chip on the Switch's board has usually failed, often after a third-party dock was used. The console works normally in handheld mode, but TV output is dead. This repair starts from R1,100.

Do you repair the Nintendo Switch 2?

Yes. Because it's new, check whether it's still covered by Nintendo's warranty first. For accidental damage, such as a cracked screen, a broken Joy-Con 2 or a charging fault, we assess it for free and quote in writing. Switch 2 parts are still limited, so each repair is priced individually.

Will I lose my games and save data?

Screen, Joy-Con, battery and charging repairs don't touch your data. Switch saves live on the console's internal memory, not the microSD card, so if you have Nintendo Switch Online, make sure cloud backup is on before the repair. If a board-level repair puts data at risk, we tell you before we start.

How long does a Switch repair take?

Joy-Con repairs are often done within 1–2 working days. Most console repairs take 3–5 working days after you approve the quote. Board-level work and Switch 2 parts can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

Is there a warranty on Switch repairs?

Yes. Every Nintendo Switch and Joy-Con repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.

Can you collect my Switch?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
