Nintendo Switch OLED Repair Johannesburg

Nintendo Switch OLED Repair Johannesburg

The Switch OLED has the best screen Nintendo has ever made — and the most expensive one to break. It also shares the original Switch's sensitivity to the wrong charger or dock: one bad third-party dock can leave it refusing to charge, or working in your hands but showing nothing on the TV. Whether it's a cracked OLED, a Switch that won't charge, a dead TV output or drifting Joy-Cons, we find the failed part and replace just that. Free diagnostic, written quote, 6-month warranty.

Is it definitely a Switch OLED? Check in 30 seconds

The serial number on the back of the console starts with XTW and the model number is HEG-001. Other giveaways: a 7-inch screen with thin black borders, a kickstand that runs the full width of the back, and a dock with a wired LAN port. On screen: System Settings → System → Serial Information.

Switch OLED, dock and Joy-Con — what goes wrong

Switch OLED console (HEG-001)

Launched 2021 · 7-inch OLED · 64GB storage · wide adjustable kickstand

Inside, the OLED is close to the 2019 Switch: the same battery, fan and charging circuit, with a bigger and much better screen. That screen is the expensive part — the OLED panel and the glass are bonded into one unit, so a crack means replacing both. The USB-C port carries power and the TV picture, so a damaged port or a blown charging chip can affect charging and TV mode at the same time.

Most common faults:

  • Cracked OLED screen from a drop
  • Won't charge after a third-party dock or charger
  • No TV output while handheld works
  • Game card slot not reading
  • Battery fading after years of daily charging
↓ See Switch OLED prices

Switch OLED dock

White or black · HDMI out, USB, wired LAN port · removable back cover

The OLED dock is a better design than the original, with a wired LAN port and a removable back cover. It holds the HDMI port, so a TV fault can be in the dock rather than the console — we test both. If the console charges and plays in handheld but shows no picture in any dock, the fault is in the console; if it works in another dock, it's the dock.

Most common faults:

  • No picture on the TV — dock HDMI port or the console's video chip
  • Dock not charging the console
  • LAN port not connecting
↓ See OLED dock prices

Joy-Con (Switch OLED)

Same Joy-Con as the original Switch · drift repair or Hall Effect upgrade

The Switch OLED uses the same Joy-Con as the original Switch, so it gets the same drift. We replace the worn stick module, or fit a Hall Effect stick that uses magnets instead of rubbing contacts so it won't wear out the same way. If both Joy-Cons drift, bring both — they're repaired individually.

Most common faults:

  • Stick drift
  • SL/SR or shoulder buttons not responding
  • Joy-Con not detected on the rails

Switch OLED faults we fix — and what each one usually means

Cracked OLED, lines, dead spots or touch not working

The OLED leaves the factory with a thin anti-shatter film on the glass — don't peel it off, it holds the glass together if it cracks. If the screen is cracked, has coloured lines or black patches, or touch stops working, the OLED panel and glass are replaced together as one bonded part.

If you see a faint ghost of a static image (a game's health bar or menu), that's OLED burn-in. Turn on Screen Burn-in Reduction under System Settings → System and lower the brightness — it usually can't be reversed, but you can stop it getting worse. OLED screen replacement from R2,500.

Won't charge or won't turn on

Leave it on the official Nintendo charger for at least an hour — a completely flat battery can take a while to show the charging icon — then hold the power button for 15 seconds. If nothing happens, the cause is usually a damaged USB-C port, or the charging chip on the board.

That chip is the part most often blown by cheap third-party docks, car chargers and non-standard USB-C chargers. We replace it at component level rather than swapping the whole board. USB-C port from R850 · charging/power IC repair from R1,200.

Works in handheld, but no picture on the TV

Check the dock's power and HDMI cables, try another TV input, and if possible try the console in a friend's official dock. If it works there, the dock is at fault. If it doesn't, the console's video chip — which sends the TV picture out through the USB-C port — has usually failed, often right after a third-party dock was used.

The Switch itself has no HDMI port; the HDMI is on the dock. Console video IC repair from R1,100 · dock repair: free quote.

Joy-Con drift

Your character walks off on their own or the camera keeps turning. Recalibrating under System Settings → Controllers and Sensors can buy time, but once the stick sensor is worn it needs replacing. Drift repair from R400 per Joy-Con · Hall Effect upgrade from R650.

"Couldn't read the game card"

Try a second game card first: if one works and another doesn't, the card is the problem. If none are read, the slot's pins are usually bent — often from a card pushed in at an angle — or the reader is worn. Slot repairs are quoted after a free diagnostic.

Battery drains fast, console runs hot or the fan is loud

After a few years of daily charging, every Switch battery loses capacity. A loud fan or a hot console in the dock usually means dust in the fan and dried thermal paste. Battery replacement from R850 · fan & thermal service from R650.

Before you bring your Switch OLED in

  1. Back up your saves. Switch save data lives on the console's internal memory, not the microSD card. With Nintendo Switch Online, check that cloud backup is on.
  2. Bring the dock and charger if the fault is charging or TV output, so we can test them too.
  3. If it started after a new dock or charger, tell us, and don't use it again until we've checked it.
  4. Leave the screen film on if the OLED is cracked — it stops glass falling out.
  5. You don't need to give us your Nintendo account password.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A photo of the back of your Switch (the serial number starts with XTW) plus a line about what happens is usually enough for a starting price on WhatsApp.

How a Switch OLED repair works at iAssist

1. Free diagnostic

We test charging, the OLED screen and touch, both Joy-Con rails, TV output through the dock, the game card slot and the fan, and find the actual failed part — not just the symptom.

2. Written quote

You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.

3. Component-level repair

Repairing a different Switch?

Switch OLED repair — frequently asked questions

How much does a Switch OLED screen replacement cost?

From R2,500. The OLED panel and the glass are bonded together, so they're replaced as one part. The diagnostic is free and you get the exact price in writing before any work starts.

Why is the Switch OLED screen more expensive than the original Switch?

On the original Switch, the touch glass and the LCD are separate, so a cracked glass can be replaced on its own. On the OLED, the panel and glass are one bonded unit, and OLED panels cost more than LCDs.

My Switch OLED has a ghost image on the screen. Can you fix it?

That's OLED burn-in from static images. It usually can't be reversed, but turning on Screen Burn-in Reduction under System Settings → System and lowering the brightness stops it getting worse. If it's distracting, the fix is a new screen, from R2,500.

My Switch OLED won't charge. What's wrong?

First leave it on the official charger for an hour, then hold the power button for 15 seconds. If it still won't charge, the USB-C port (from R850) or the charging chip on the board (from R1,200) has usually failed. Third-party docks and chargers are the most common cause.

My Switch OLED works in handheld but not on the TV. Is it the dock?

Try the console in another official dock. If it works there, the dock is at fault. If not, the console's video chip has usually failed; that repair starts from R1,100. The Switch has no HDMI port of its own — it's on the dock.

How much is Joy-Con drift repair?

From R400 per Joy-Con, or from R650 for a Hall Effect stick upgrade that doesn't wear out the same way. The Switch OLED uses the same Joy-Con as the original Switch.

Will I lose my games and save data?

Screen, Joy-Con, battery and charging repairs don't touch your data. Saves live on the console's internal memory, not the microSD card, so turn on Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup before the repair if you can. If a board-level repair puts data at risk, we tell you first.

How long does a Switch OLED repair take?

Joy-Con repairs are often done within 1–2 working days. Most console repairs take 3–5 working days after you approve the quote; board-level work can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

Is there a warranty on Switch OLED repairs?

Yes. Every repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.

Can you collect my Switch OLED?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
