PlayStation Repairs Johannesburg
PlayStation Repairs Johannesburg β PS5, PS5 Slim, PS5 Pro & PS4
Most PlayStations reach our bench the same way: an HDMI cable yanked when someone tripped over it mid-match, a power spike when the lights came back after load shedding, or a PS4 Pro that started sounding like a 747 taking off from OR Tambo. We repair PS5 and PS4 consoles at component level in Silvamonte β HDMI ports and chips, power supplies, disc drives, southbridge faults and overheating β so your console, your saves and your PSN account stay exactly as they were. Pick your console below to see what usually goes wrong with it and what it costs to fix.

On the console: turn it around. The model number is on the sticker at the back (PS4) or on the label on the back/underside of the PS5. It starts with CFI- on a PS5 and CUH- on a PS4.
On the screen (if it still shows a picture):

- PS4: Settings β System β System Information.
Then match the first digits:

PS5 repair (original Disc & Digital Edition)
Model CFI-1000, CFI-1100 and CFI-1200 series Β· disc and Digital Edition
The launch PS5 is now old enough that the first wave of wear-and-tear faults has arrived. The HDMI 2.1 port is soldered straight to the motherboard, so a cable pulled sideways cracks it more easily than on a PS4, and five years of dust packed into the big intake fan is behind most of the overheating we see. It's also the console where the liquid metal Sony uses instead of normal thermal paste needs a specialist hand when it's re-applied.
What we see most on this model:
- HDMI port damage β blue light, no picture on any TV
- HDMI encoder chip failure after a power surge β port looks perfect, still no signal
- Overheating and fan noise from dust build-up and tired thermal material
- White light, then switches off β usually power supply or board-level power fault
- Disc Edition: grinding drive, discs not recognised
No picture / HDMI

Model CFI-2000 series Β· disc and Digital Edition
The Slim fixed some of the original's habits but brought a new one: the disc drive is a separate module that clips onto the side and is paired to that specific console the first time it connects online. A drive moved between consoles, or a board repair done without care, can leave you with a drive the console refuses to use. We test drive pairing as part of every Slim repair. Its HDMI port is still the number-one reason a Slim arrives on our bench.
What we see most on this model:
- HDMI port and HDMI chip faults β same symptoms as the original PS5
- Detachable disc drive not reading or not recognised after being swapped
- Overheating from dust in a smaller, denser case
- No power after a surge β internal power supply or power IC
No picture / HDMI

β Choose a different PlayStationPS5 Pro repair
Model CFI-7000 and CFI-7100 series
The PS5 Pro is the newest and most expensive PlayStation, so most owners are still in Sony's warranty window β check that first. Out of warranty, the faults are the familiar PlayStation ones: HDMI damage from cables and surges, and heat. Because Pro boards are newer and pricier, anything beyond the HDMI port, power supply or a service is quoted in writing after the free diagnostic.
What we see most on this model:
- HDMI port damage from cable strain
- Fan noise and heat under heavy load
- Add-on disc drive not reading or not pairing
- Power faults after a surge or load-shedding switch-on
No picture / HDMI
Overheating & noise

β Choose a different PlayStationPS4 Pro repair
Model CUH-7000, CUH-7100 and CUH-7200 series
If your PS4 Pro sounds like a jet engine when you load a game, you're not alone β it runs hot, and after a few years in a Joburg lounge the heatsink is usually packed solid with dust and the original thermal paste has dried to chalk. A proper service makes it noticeably quieter. The Pro also has its own HDMI chip behind the port, so 'no picture' is a two-suspect fault that we test properly before quoting.
What we see most on this model:
- Jet-engine fan noise and overheating shutdowns
- HDMI port or HDMI chip failure β blue light, no picture
- Power supply failure after surges
- Hard drive failure β stuck on 'Cannot start the PS4' / safe mode loops
- Disc drive not reading, ejecting discs by itself

β Choose a different PlayStationPS4 Slim repair
Model CUH-2000, CUH-2100 and CUH-2200 series
The PS4 Slim is the most common PlayStation we still repair β plenty of households kept one for the kids when the PS5 arrived. It's a tough console, but the HDMI port takes a beating from being moved between rooms, and its disc drive is the next thing to go. Most Slim repairs are well worth doing: the fix costs a fraction of a replacement console.
What we see most on this model:
- HDMI port damage from moving the console between TVs
- Disc drive not reading or not accepting discs
- Hard drive failure β safe mode loops, 'Cannot start the PS4'
- Power faults after load shedding
No picture / HDMI

Model CUH-1000, CUH-1100 and CUH-1200 series
The original PS4 is the console behind the famous 'blue light of death' β the light pulses blue and the TV never gets a picture. It can be the HDMI port, the power supply, the hard drive or the board, which is exactly why we diagnose before quoting. Early CUH-1000 and 1100 units also use touch-sensitive power and eject buttons, and a worn or dirty sensor can make the console spit discs out on its own.
What we see most on this model:
- Blue light of death β pulsing blue, no picture
- Discs ejecting by themselves (touch-sensitive eject button, early models)
- Power supply failure β no lights or beeps
- Hard drive failure and safe mode loops

Stick drift β your character walking or the camera turning when you're not touching the stick β is wear on the analogue stick module, and it's the most common controller fault there is. We replace the module, or upgrade it to Hall Effect sticks that use magnets instead of rubbing contacts and so can't wear out the same way. See all controller repairs β
What we see most on this model:
- Analogue stick drift
- USB-C (DualSense) or micro-USB (DualShock 4) charging port damage
- Buttons or triggers not responding

Common PlayStation faults β what's usually behind them
No picture on the TV (console turns on)
This is the most common PlayStation repair we do. There are two suspects, and a good quote depends on knowing which one it is. The HDMI port is soldered directly to the motherboard; a cable pulled sideways or a console moved while still plugged in cracks the solder joints or bends the pins inside. The HDMI chip behind it converts the console's video into an HDMI signal, and it's the part that usually dies after a power surge β the port can look perfect and still give you nothing.
We check both under the microscope before quoting, so you never pay for a port when the chip is the real problem. PS5 HDMI port from R1,800 Β· PS5 HDMI chip from R2,500 Β· PS4 HDMI port from R1,200.

In Gauteng the biggest cause is power: the surge when electricity comes back after load shedding, a lightning strike on the line, or a cheap multiplug. It usually takes out the internal power supply first. If the supply tests fine, we move to the power-management ICs and the southbridge β the chip that handles power-on, the USB ports and the front buttons, and a classic cause of 'beeps but no picture' on PS4.
Power supply from R1,800 (PS4) / R2,450 (PS5) Β· Southbridge from R2,800. A surge protector or UPS on your console is the cheapest repair you'll never need.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp βLoud fan, overheating, shutting down mid-game
Nine times out of ten it's dust. The fan pulls air through a fine heatsink that slowly clogs with dust and pet hair, the console runs hotter, and the fan spins faster to compensate until the console shuts itself down to protect the processor. A PlayStation that lives on carpet, in a closed TV cabinet or near a dog gets there faster.
On a PS4 we strip it down, clean the fan and heatsink and replace the dried-out thermal paste. The PS5 is different: Sony uses liquid metal between the processor and heatsink instead of paste. It moves heat better, but it's electrically conductive, so re-applying it is careful, sealed work β not something to try at home. PS4 service from R1,000 Β· PS5 service with liquid metal from R1,500.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp βWon't read discs, grinding noises, ejecting by itself
Disc faults are either mechanical (the drive motor, gears or eject mechanism), the laser that reads the disc, or the drive's control chip on the board. A grinding sound or a disc that won't go in is usually mechanical; 'unrecognised disc' on clean discs usually points to the laser. Early original PS4s also eject discs on their own because of their touch-sensitive eject button.
On the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro the disc drive is a separate, detachable unit that pairs with your console, so we always test it on your own console. Drive repair from R1,000 Β· Laser from R1,500 (PS4) / R1,850 (PS5).
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp βPS4 blue light of death / PS5 white light then off
A PS4 that pulses blue and never shows a picture β the 'blue light of death' β is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can be the HDMI port, the power supply, a failed hard drive or the main processor. On a PS5, a white light that flashes and then dies, or a console that crashes in rest mode, usually points to the power supply or a board-level power fault.
Because the same light can mean five different repairs, we diagnose first and quote second. The diagnostic is free; you only pay if you approve the repair.

Stick drift is wear inside the analogue stick module. Charging faults are usually the port, which gets loose from cables being pulled at an angle. Drift repair from R350 per stick Β· Hall Effect upgrade from R650 Β· charging port from R450. See controller repairs β

Repair at iAssist
- Most repairs between R1,000 and R3,500
- Keep your console, saves, settings and installed games
- Component-level fix β the failed part, not the whole board
- Free diagnostic and a written quote first
- 6-month warranty on parts and labour
Buying a new console
- A new PS5 Slim costs well over R10,000 in South Africa
- Re-download every game and re-do your setup
- Your old console goes to landfill for a fixable fault
- Second-hand consoles come with their own unknown history
Before you bring it in
Don't keep forcing it on. If your console dies after a surge, repeatedly switching it on can turn a power-supply job into a board job.
Saves: if you have PlayStation Plus, your saves are probably already in the cloud. If the hard drive itself has failed (PS4), data on it may not be recoverable β we'll tell you before any drive is replaced.
Sign-in: you don't need to give us your PSN password. We test with our own account.
Send a photo of the sticker on the back of your console and a one-line description of the fault β we'll reply with a starting price.
How a PlayStation repair works at iAssist
1. Free diagnostic
We test the console on the bench β power rails, HDMI output, storage, drive and fan β and find the actual failed part, not just the symptom.
2. Written quote
You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.
3. Component-level repair
We replace the failed port, chip or module under a microscope rather than swapping the whole motherboard β which is why it costs a fraction of a new console.
4. Soak test & hand-over
Every repaired console runs a game under load before it goes back to you, then leaves with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.
Three ways to get your PlayStation to us
Walk in, arrange Gauteng collection, or ship from anywhere in South Africa. Every repair starts with a free diagnostic and a written quote.
Drop it off at the workshop
Bring the console in to our Silvamonte workshop any business day β just the console and its power cable, no need for the controllers or games unless the fault involves them. We log the fault with you at the counter and the diagnostic is free.

How much does a PS5 HDMI port repair cost?
A PS5 HDMI port replacement starts from R1,800. If the port is fine but the HDMI chip behind it has failed β common after power surges β the repair starts from R2,500. We check both during the free diagnostic and confirm the exact price in writing before any work starts. A PS4 Slim or original PS4 HDMI port starts from R1,200, and a PS4 Pro from R1,400.
My PS5 turns on but there's no picture on the TV. What's wrong?
First try a different HDMI cable, a different HDMI input and safe mode (hold the power button until the second beep). If there's still no picture, it's almost always the HDMI port or the HDMI chip on the motherboard. A damaged port usually follows a cable being pulled or the console being moved; a failed chip usually follows a surge. Both are repairable.
How do I know which PS5 or PS4 model I have?
Look at the sticker on the back or underside of the console. PS5 model numbers start with CFI- (CFI-10xx to 12xx is the original PS5, CFI-20xx is the PS5 Slim, CFI-70xx and 71xx is the PS5 Pro). PS4 model numbers start with CUH- (CUH-10xx to 12xx is the original, CUH-2xxx is the Slim, CUH-7xxx is the Pro). You can also WhatsApp us a photo of the sticker.
My PS4 has a blue light and no picture. Can it be fixed?
Usually, yes. The blue light of death can be caused by the HDMI port, the power supply, a failed hard drive or the main processor, so we diagnose it for free before quoting. Most cases are HDMI or hard-drive related and cost between R1,200 and R1,800 to fix.
Do you repair the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro?
Yes. The PS5 Slim (CFI-2000 series) gets the same HDMI, power and overheating faults as the original, plus issues with its detachable disc drive. The PS5 Pro is newer, so check whether it's still under Sony's warranty first. Out of warranty, HDMI port repairs start from R1,800 and a service with liquid metal from R1,500. Board-level faults are quoted after a free diagnostic.
Will I lose my games and saved progress?
Not from an HDMI, power supply, disc drive or overheating repair β those don't touch your storage. If your PS4's hard drive has failed and needs replacing, the data on the old drive may not be recoverable, so we'll warn you before any drive work. PlayStation Plus members usually have their saves backed up in the cloud already.
How long does a PlayStation repair take?
Most PlayStation repairs are completed within 3β5 working days after you approve the quote, including a soak test with a game running under load. Parts-dependent or board-level repairs can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront if that's the case.
Is there a warranty on PlayStation repairs?
Yes. Every PlayStation repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour. If the same fault returns in that time, we fix it at no cost.
Can you collect my PlayStation?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier. Outside Gauteng, we arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy. You can also drop it off at our workshop at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
Can you fix PS5 controller stick drift?
Yes. Drift repair starts from R350 per stick. For a more permanent fix, we can upgrade the sticks to Hall Effect modules from R650. These use magnets instead of rubbing contacts, so they don't wear out the same way.
