PS4 Repair Johannesburg

PS4 Repair Johannesburg — PS4, PS4 Slim & PS4 Pro

Plenty of PS4s are still going strong in South African homes — often as the second console in the kids' room. When one stops, it's usually the same handful of faults: the light pulses blue and the TV stays black, the fan roars from the moment you switch it on, the hard drive gives up, or the console died when the power came back after load shedding. Nearly all of them are one-part repairs that cost far less than another console. Free diagnostic, written quote, 6-month warranty.

PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro — what goes wrong on each

PS4 original (CUH-1000, 1100 & 1200)

Launched 2013 · 500GB or 1TB hard drive · light strip on top

The original PS4 is now more than ten years old, and age shows up in two places: the hard drive and the power supply. A tired hard drive gives you slow menus, safe-mode loops and the 'Cannot start the PS4' message; a tired power supply gives you nothing at all. The first two revisions (CUH-1000 and 1100) also have touch-sensitive power and eject buttons, so a bit of dust or moisture can make the console spit discs out on its own. The CUH-1200 switched to physical buttons.

Most common faults:

  • Blue light of death — pulsing blue, never turns white, no picture
  • Discs ejecting by themselves (CUH-1000 / 1100)
  • Hard drive failure and safe-mode loops
  • No power at all after a surge
↓ See PS4 original prices

PS4 Slim (CUH-2000, 2100 & 2200)

Launched 2016 · 500GB or 1TB · no optical audio port

The Slim is the PS4 we see most, usually because it's been moved between the lounge and a bedroom with the HDMI cable still in. Its HDMI port is the number-one repair, followed by the disc drive. Behind the port sits an HDMI chip that can fail after a power surge, so a console with a perfect-looking port can still give you no picture — we test both before quoting.

Most common faults:

  • HDMI port damage — blue light, no picture
  • HDMI chip failure after a surge
  • Disc drive not reading or not taking discs
  • Hard drive failure — 'Cannot access system storage'
↓ See PS4 Slim prices

PS4 Pro (CUH-7000, 7100 & 7200)

Launched 2016 · 1TB · 4K output

The Pro is the hardest-working PS4 and the loudest. After a few years the heatsink is packed with dust and the thermal paste has dried out, so the fan runs flat out from the menu screen. A full service usually makes it dramatically quieter. It also has a bigger power supply than the other PS4s, which is why its power repairs cost more, and its own HDMI chip behind the port.

Most common faults:

  • Jet-engine fan noise from the menu screen
  • Overheating shutdowns mid-game
  • HDMI port or HDMI chip — no picture
  • Power supply failure after a surge

PS4 faults we fix — and what each one usually means

Blue light of death — pulsing blue, then nothing

When a PS4 starts normally, the light pulses blue for a moment and then turns solid white. If it keeps pulsing blue and never goes white — or turns off after a few seconds — the console is failing to start. It's a symptom, not a diagnosis: the cause can be the HDMI port, the power supply, the hard drive or the main processor.

First try safe mode: switch the console off, then hold the power button until the second beep (about 7 seconds), and connect the controller with a USB cable. If safe mode appears, 'Rebuild Database' (option 5) fixes a surprising number of start-up problems without touching your games. If nothing works, we diagnose it for free — most blue-light cases turn out to be HDMI or hard-drive faults. HDMI port from R1,200 · hard drive from R1,800.

No picture on the TV — HDMI port or HDMI chip?

Check the easy things first: another HDMI cable, another TV input, and safe mode (hold power until the second beep) — safe mode also lets you reset the resolution if a setting is the problem.

If there's still no picture, look into the console's HDMI port with a torch. Bent or flattened pins mean the port needs replacing. If the port looks perfect, the HDMI chip behind it is the usual suspect, especially after load shedding or a storm. Port from R1,200 (Slim & original) or R1,400 (Pro) · chip from R1,500 (Slim) or R1,800 (Pro).

Loud fan, overheating, red light

A PS4 that roars like a jet engine is almost always clogged with dust, with thermal paste that has dried out after years of heat. A blinking red light means the console has overheated and is protecting itself. Give it space — out of closed cabinets and off the carpet — and blow the dust out of the vents with the console unplugged.

If it's still loud, it needs a proper service: we strip it down, clean the fan and heatsink, and replace the old paste. It's the single repair that makes the biggest difference to a PS4 Pro. Full service from R1,000 (Pro) or R1,200 (Slim & original).

Won't turn on, beeps, or switches off by itself

No lights and no beeps after a surge usually means the internal power supply. One beep and then nothing, or a console that switches itself off a few seconds after starting, can also point to the power-management chips or the southbridge — the chip that handles power-on and the USB ports.

Power supply from R1,800 (Slim & original) or R2,800 (Pro) · power IC from R2,000 · southbridge from R2,800. Stop trying to switch it on after a surge: repeated attempts can turn a power-supply job into a board job.

Hard drive failure, safe-mode loops and SSD upgrades

Every PS4 uses a 2.5-inch hard drive, and after years of use they wear out. Signs: very slow menus, games freezing while loading, 'Cannot start the PS4. Cannot access system storage', or a console that keeps booting into safe mode. We replace the drive and reinstall the system software. 1TB hard drive from R1,800.

Because the drive is replaceable, it's also an easy upgrade. Swapping to an SSD makes menus and loading screens noticeably faster, and a bigger drive ends the delete-a-game-to-install-one routine. Ask for a quote with the size you want.

Won't read discs, grinding, or ejecting by itself

'Unrecognised disc' on clean discs usually points to the laser. Grinding, discs that won't go in or won't come out are mechanical faults in the drive. On the original CUH-1000 and 1100, discs that eject on their own are often the touch-sensitive eject button, not the drive itself.

Disc drive repair from R1,000 (Slim & original) or R1,200 (Pro) · laser from R1,500. If the drive's control chip on the board has failed, a drive IC replacement starts from R1,200.

Before you bring your PS4 in

  1. Back up if you can. PlayStation Plus uploads saves to the cloud; otherwise use Settings → System → Back Up and Restore with a USB drive.
  2. Note any error code (for example CE- or SU- followed by numbers) or take a photo of the screen or the light.
  3. Remove any disc, and bring the power cable. No need for controllers or games unless they're part of the fault.
  4. After a surge, stop trying to switch it on. Repeated attempts can turn a power-supply repair into a board repair.
  5. You don't need to give us your PSN password. We test on our own account.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A photo of the sticker on the back (CUH- number) plus a line about what happens is usually enough for a starting price on WhatsApp.

How a PS4 repair works at iAssist

1. Free diagnostic

We test HDMI output, the power supply, the hard drive's health, temperatures under load and the disc drive, and find the actual failed part — not just the symptom.

2. Written quote

You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.

3. Component-level repair

We replace the failed port, chip or module under a microscope rather than swapping the whole motherboard — which is why it costs a fraction of a new console.

4. Soak test & hand-over

Every repaired console runs a game under load before it goes back to you, then leaves with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

PS4 repair — frequently asked questions

How much does PS4 repair cost?

It depends on the model and the fault. Starting prices: HDMI port from R1,200 (R1,400 on the Pro), full service from R1,000, power supply from R1,800, hard drive from R1,800, disc drive from R1,000 and laser from R1,500. The diagnostic is free and you get the exact price in writing before any work starts.

What is the PS4 blue light of death?

It's when the light keeps pulsing blue and never turns solid white, with no picture on the TV. It can be caused by the HDMI port, the power supply, a failing hard drive or the main processor, so it needs a diagnosis rather than a guess. Try safe mode first; if that doesn't help, we diagnose it for free.

Is it worth repairing a PS4 in 2026?

Usually, yes. Most PS4 repairs cost between R1,000 and R2,000, which is far less than a replacement console, and you keep your saves, settings and installed games. If a repair isn't worth it — for example a failed main processor — we'll tell you before you spend anything.

My PS4 Pro is very loud. Can you fix it?

Yes. A loud PS4 Pro almost always needs a full service: we clean the fan and heatsink and replace the dried-out thermal paste. It usually makes the console dramatically quieter and cooler. A PS4 Pro full service starts from R1,000.

Can you upgrade my PS4 to an SSD?

Yes. Every PS4 uses a replaceable 2.5-inch drive, so we can fit an SSD or a bigger hard drive and reinstall the system software. Back up your saves first, or tell us and we'll talk you through it. Ask for a quote with the size you want.

Will I lose my games and saves?

Not from an HDMI, cooling, power supply or disc drive repair, because those don't touch the hard drive. If the hard drive itself has failed, the data on it may not be recoverable, so we warn you before any drive work. PlayStation Plus saves are already in the cloud, and you can back up to USB under Settings, System, Back Up and Restore.

How do I know which PS4 I have?

Check the sticker on the back of the console. CUH-10xx, 11xx or 12xx is the original PS4, CUH-2xxx is the PS4 Slim and CUH-7xxx is the PS4 Pro. If it still shows a picture, go to Settings, then System, then System Information.

How long does a PS4 repair take?

Most PS4 repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a soak test with a game running. Board-level faults can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

Is there a warranty on PS4 repairs?

Yes. Every PS4 repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.

Can you collect my PS4?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
