How we do it

iPhone buttons — power/side button, volume buttons, mute/silent switch on applicable models, Action button on iPhone 15 Pro and newer, and Camera Control on iPhone 16 series — are mechanical switches that wear with use. They fail from physical damage, moisture ingress in the button recess, or flex cable fatigue at the connection points.

The side button on iPhone X through 14 is also the Face ID wake sensor — failure impacts lock screen behaviour and Apple Pay. Volume buttons and the mute switch are on a shared flex on most models — a single flex tear can disable all three simultaneously. The Action button on iPhone 15 Pro and Camera Control on iPhone 16 have unique flex routing close to the camera module requiring careful disassembly.

Power button not clicking or stuck down

Mechanical switch failure or debris under the button cap. iPhone can still be used via AssistiveTouch while awaiting repair but lock/unlock functionality is severely impacted.

Volume buttons not working

Volume flex cable failure — affects both up and down buttons simultaneously on most models. Ringer and media volume adjustable via Settings until repaired.

Mute/silent switch broken or stuck

Silent switch lever snapped or switch mechanism failed. Silent mode can still be toggled via Control Centre but the physical switch needs replacement.

Action button not registering — iPhone 15 Pro

New button type with different flex routing. Moisture ingress or physical damage to the Action button mechanism. Assessment required before quoting.

Camera Control not working — iPhone 16

Camera Control is a capacitive button — the most complex button assembly on any iPhone. Flex damage or capacitive layer failure. Board-level assessment may be needed.

Button works intermittently

Partially failed switch or loose flex connection. Intermittent function worsens over time. Early repair is less complex than full failure repair.

iPhone Button Repair — frequently asked questions

My iPhone restarts every 3 minutes after a drop — could that be the power button?

Yes. The power button flex on older iPhones carries the mic2 thermal sensor. When the flex is damaged, mic2 disappears and thermalmonitord triggers a restart every 3 minutes. The button may still physically work — but the missing sensor is the restart cause.

What is Camera Control and what happens if it breaks?

Camera Control is a touch-and-click button on the right side of iPhone 16 and 17 series for camera access. If damaged from a drop, individual button replacement is very difficult. We typically replace the enclosure or midframe.

My iPhone volume buttons don't work after a drop — flex or board?

Usually the flex. Volume buttons run on a single flex along the left side. A drop to the left can tear or kink it. If volume control is absent from software too — board-level fault.

Does the SE 2022 have an Action Button?

No — the SE 2022 has a standard mute switch. The Action Button appears on iPhone 15 Pro onwards and iPhone 17e — first time on an e-series model.

My Touch ID doesn't recognise fingerprints reliably — is that hardware?

Could be hardware or fingerprint registration. Delete and re-enrol all fingerprints first. If reliability doesn't improve — the Touch ID sensor is degrading.

My iPhone mute switch is stuck — can that be repaired?

Yes — stuck mute switches from debris or a bent switch from drops. We clean and assess. If the switch assembly is damaged, replaced as part of the button flex.

Will button repair affect other functions?

Power button flex on older models carries mic2 — we verify sensor function after repair. Volume flex on 12 series near AP/RF board — we confirm Wi-Fi and cellular after any left-side repair.

How long does button repair take?

30–60 minutes for button flex replacements. Camera Control via enclosure swap: allow half a day.
