Known issues on the iPhone 16 — read before booking
✅ First iPhone generation to open from the back — better for repair
The entire iPhone 16 lineup — 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max — is the first iPhone generation where the device opens from the back for all repairs except the screen. Previously, every iPhone from the iPhone X onwards opened from the front, meaning the display had to be removed to access the battery, cameras, logic board, and other internal components.
This design change is genuinely positive for repairability. Battery replacement, rear camera work, and other internal repairs no longer require screen removal as a first step — reducing the risk of screen damage during unrelated repairs, shortening repair time, and keeping costs more manageable. It also means that if your screen is cracked, we can still access the internals safely without risking further screen damage.
⚠ Camera Control button — complex to replace individually
The Camera Control button — Apple's new touch-and-click interface on the right side of every iPhone 16 — is one of the most complex individual components to replace on these models. The button integrates a capacitive touch layer, a physical click mechanism, and a dedicated flex cable, all housed in a precision-machined slot in the chassis frame.
When the Camera Control button fails from a drop or damage to the right side of the device, individual button replacement is very difficult. At iAssist we typically take one of two approaches depending on the extent of the damage:
- Enclosure / midframe swap — where the button slot itself is deformed or the damage is significant, we replace the complete enclosure or midframe. All components are migrated to the new housing and parts pair correctly — no error messages after repair.
- Used original midframe — where we have stock of a used original midframe in the correct colour and storage configuration, we use this as the donor housing. All paired components transfer correctly.
Camera Control repairs pair fine after the housing swap — no issues with the capacitive surface, click mechanism, or iOS Camera Control functionality. It is not a quick job, but the result is correct.
⚠ Logic board flex at the bottom — baseband and Wi-Fi faults
The iPhone 16 series has a new logic board design where the board is more susceptible to flexing at the bottom section. A hard drop, significant pressure, or even aggressive back glass repair can cause the bottom portion of the board to flex enough to disrupt solder joints — producing faults that look like component failures but are actually mechanical connection issues.
Common consequences of board flex on the iPhone 16:
- No baseband / No SIM / No Service — the RF components at the bottom of the board lose connection, presenting as "No SIM Installed" or permanent No Service with a working SIM card
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth failure — wireless chip connections disrupted by board flex, presenting as greyed-out Wi-Fi or constant disconnections
- Ripped pads — where the flex has been severe enough, solder pads physically tear from the board surface, requiring micro-soldering pad reconstruction before any reflow can be attempted
These are board-level micro-soldering repairs. We assess under microscope first — free diagnostic, quote before any work begins.
⚠ USB-C charging IC failure — stuck at 1%, charging failure, 0.1A draw
USB-C charging IC failure is a known issue on this model and one of the most technically involved board-level repairs we do. Understanding the chip architecture explains why it is not a simple swap.
The two-chip charging system:
- SN2012027 (U2) — USB-PD controller: This is the chip that negotiates USB Power Delivery with the cable and charger. It handles the USB-C handshake that tells the charger what voltage and current to supply. When U2 fails, the phone cannot negotiate charging and either refuses to charge or draws only minimal current.
- 8N/Q4EE EEPROM — cryptographically paired with the U2: This small companion chip stores calibration and authentication data that is cryptographically linked to the U2 at the board level. The SN2012027 (U2) and the 8N/Q4EE EEPROM are a paired set — if you replace only the U2 controller without moving the original EEPROM or reprogramming a new EEPROM with the correct dump data, the phone will typically show a charging logo but draw no current (approximately 0.1A). Both chips must come from the same donor board or the EEPROM must be correctly reprogrammed.
- U9500 "Tigris" (CP3200B1G0) — primary battery charger IC: Separate from the U2, the Tigris manages the actual power flow to the battery — the physical charging process. It relies on the U2 for USB-PD negotiation but handles current regulation independently. In some cases the Tigris itself burns out — we have seen this — producing slightly different symptoms to a U2/EEPROM failure.
Common symptoms: Stuck at 1%, charging logo shows but phone draws only ~0.1A (visible on USB meter), total charging failure, non-responsive touch during charging, overheating near port.
Common causes: Low-quality or incompatible USB-C chargers — particularly older Android chargers, non-MFi cables, and USB-C ports built into desks, furniture, and car dashboards that do not properly implement the USB-C Power Delivery standard.
How we diagnose: We assess each case individually — sometimes it is the Tigris (U9500) that has burned, sometimes it is the U2 and EEPROM pair. The symptom presentation and board-level testing tells us which. Specialists use dedicated programmers such as the JCID 16 Series Charging IC Programmer for EEPROM dump and reprogramming where applicable.
Quick diagnostic — charges wirelessly but not via USB-C cable?
If your iPhone 15/16 charges normally on a wireless or MagSafe pad but refuses to charge via a USB-C cable, this points directly to the USB-C charging circuit — not the battery. In our experience: ~80% of the time this is the USB-C IC (SN2012027 / U2 or Tigris), and ~20% of the time it is the physical USB-C charging port itself. Both are caused by the same root problem — a cheap, non-certified charger or a power surge through the cable damaging the USB-C circuitry.
