Known issues on the iPhone 14 Pro Max β€” read before booking

⚠ Green screen / yellow screen β€” AB adhesive failure and exposed display flex

The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have a well-documented display fault caused by the failure of the AB adhesive (acrylic-based optical bonding) that holds the display panel assembly together. This is one of the most common issues we see on these models and requires specific understanding to explain correctly.

What happens: The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max use a tightly laminated "sandwich" display structure β€” the OLED panel, touch digitiser, and protective glass are all bonded together in layers using AB adhesive. Over time, and particularly when exposed to heat cycles, humidity, or steam, this adhesive dries out and begins to contract. As it contracts, the OLED display frame starts to lift away from the physical panel underneath it.

When the frame lifts, the display flex cable β€” the ribbon that carries all display signals from the logic board to the OLED panel β€” becomes exposed. An exposed flex has no protection from moisture, movement, or pressure. Once exposed it begins to corrode, bend, or crack, producing the characteristic symptoms:

  • Bright green screen β€” entire display shows solid green with no image
  • Yellow screen or yellow tint β€” display image visible but with strong yellow cast
  • Vertical or horizontal lines β€” green, purple, or white lines running across the display
  • No display at all β€” flex cable corrosion has progressed to the point of complete signal failure
  • Flickering β€” intermittent flex connection producing a flickering or strobing display
  • Partial display failure β€” one portion of the screen works correctly while another shows discolouration or no image

This fault is progressive β€” it typically starts as an intermittent green tint or yellow cast, particularly at low brightness or in warm environments, and worsens over time as the adhesive continues to contract and the flex continues to degrade. Do not wait to bring it in.

Why it happens on 14 Pro and Pro Max specifically: The ProMotion Always-On Display on these models runs continuously β€” 24 hours a day β€” generating heat cycles that accelerate AB adhesive degradation faster than on models where the display turns off completely. Combined with any humidity or steam exposure (bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor use in humid conditions), the adhesive fails faster than on standard iPhone models.

Screen replacement is required. Once the flex is exposed and corroding, the display assembly cannot be saved β€” the entire screen must be replaced. We carry both used original Apple OLED and new OLED options for the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

⚠ Random rebooting β€” panic log diagnostics, R250 assessment

Random rebooting on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max has multiple flex cable causes β€” plus a board-level cause unique to the Pro's two-layer "sandwich" logic board design. We read the iOS panic log file and identify the exact error code before replacing anything. R250 diagnostic, credited toward the repair if you proceed.

Causes and panic log codes:

  • Proximity flex β€” code 0x200000
The proximity sensor flex at the top of the device. Easily liquid-damaged or torn during a screen replacement. Generates SMC PANIC β€” ASSERTION FAILED with code 0x200000. Causes 3-minute restart cycle β€” most commonly after screen repair or water exposure.
  • Charging port flex β€” code 0x100000
The bottom flex integrating the charging connector and associated sensors. Damaged by hard drops or incorrect back glass repair. Generates panic code 0x100000. Device restarts randomly every 2–5 minutes.
  • Power button flex
On the 14 Pro and Pro Max the power button flex wraps around the logic board. A damaged power button flex sends continuous reset signals to power management, causing persistent random rebooting.
  • 2-layer sandwich board β€” Gyro U7300 fault
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max use a two-layer logic board β€” AP board on top of RF board. If the inter-board connection is disrupted by a hard drop or ripped pads, the Gyro sensor (U7300) loses its signal lines and iOS triggers a restart. This is a micro-soldering repair β€” pad reconstruction and board reflow β€” not a flex replacement.

Combined codes: 0x300000 means both proximity flex (0x200000) and charging port flex (0x100000) have failed simultaneously.

How our R250 diagnostic works: We read the panic log, identify the fault code, and test with known-good OEM flexes before any replacement. Sandwich board faults assessed under microscope. R250 credited against the repair cost.

A software restore does nothing for hardware bootloops. If your 14 Pro has already been restored and is still rebooting, it is a flex cable or board fault. Bring it in for a panic log diagnostic.

⚠ NAND storage failure β€” iTunes / DFU mode on heavily used devices

NAND wear is beginning to appear on iPhone 14 Pro Max devices that have been heavily used or kept near full storage capacity since purchase. When NAND is the cause, the device gets stuck in iTunes or DFU mode and restore fails with error codes 4013, 9, 14, or 21 β€” no amount of software restore will fix this, as the fault is in the hardware storage chip itself.

What many shops get wrong: Charging for repeated DFU restore attempts as "software repair" without ever diagnosing the NAND. We use the P15 NAND programmer to replace and correctly program the chip. We recommend upgrading to 256GB when the NAND is being replaced β€” minimal extra cost, maximum remaining write cycles.

Stuck in iTunes or DFU with repeated restore failures? Bring it in β€” free board diagnostic before any more restore attempts.

iPhone 14 Pro Max repair β€” frequently asked questions

My iPhone 14 Pro Max screen has gone green or yellow over time β€” what is this?

The AB adhesive green/yellow screen defect on the 14 Pro Max. The adhesive bonding the OLED to the frame dries and fails β€” accelerated by Always-On Display heat. As the frame lifts the display flex oxidises, producing a green or yellow colour shift. Screen replacement is required.

Why does my iPhone 14 Pro Max restart randomly β€” what panic log codes should I look for?

Settings β†’ Privacy β†’ Analytics & Improvements β†’ Analytics Data β†’ panic-full file. 0x200000 = proximity flex. 0x100000 = charging port flex. Also check power button flex and sandwich board Gyro U7300 fault. R250 diagnostic β€” we read the log before touching any part.

My 14 Pro Max won't charge on Lightning β€” which chip has failed?

~80% Hydra IC, ~20% Lightning port. Free diagnostic confirms which. Use only Apple MFi-certified cables to prevent this.

My iPhone 14 Pro Max is stuck in DFU mode with repeated restore failures β€” NAND?

Error 4013 or 9 on repeated attempts = NAND flash storage failure. We replace using the P15 programmer. 256GB upgrade recommended β€” board is already open.

Is glass-only refurbishment recommended on the 14 Pro Max OLED?

Yes where the panel is intact β€” the 6.7" OLED is the most expensive component on the device. But given the AB adhesive defect on 14 Pro series panels, we always assess adhesive condition before recommending glass-only. Sometimes a full replacement is the safer call.

Can the back glass on the 14 Pro Max be repaired?

Yes β€” laser removal required. The back glass must be carefully removed to avoid damaging the board flex connections underneath. Same-day repair available for most colours.

How long does a 14 Pro Max screen replacement take?

60–90 minutes. Includes True Tone data transfer from original display. Same-day turnaround at our Silvamonte centre in most cases.

Is it worth repairing an iPhone 14 Pro Max in 2026?

Yes β€” the A16, 6.7" ProMotion OLED, and 48MP camera make this a very capable device. The AB adhesive screen issue is repairable. Battery and screen work are excellent value at 3 years old.
