The most frequent faults we diagnose and repair on the iPhone SE (3rd Gen / 2022). Bring it in for a free diagnostic and we'll tell you exactly what's needed before any work begins.
Battery approaching service
At 4 years, most SE 2022 batteries are at 82–88%. Heavy users are at or below 80%.
LCD screen damage
Drop damage is the primary repair driver on this model. LCD replacement is a full assembly.

Four years of Lightning use showing on heavy-use devices.
Hydra charging IC failure
Same Hydra IC susceptibility as other Lightning iPhones — cheap cables are the cause.
Touch ID degradation
Home button Touch ID response slowing or failing at 4 years on some units.
Water damage
IP67 seal degrading with age — handle with care around moisture.

Known issues on the iPhone SE 2022 — read before booking
📋 The SE 2022 does not have the SE 2020 board defect
The known no-touch and 3-minute restart PCB trace defect that affects the iPhone SE 2020 is specific to that generation's board layout. The SE 2022 uses a different internal design and we have not seen this fault pattern on 2022 units. If you have an SE 2022 with touch issues or random rebooting, bring it in for a standard diagnostic — the cause will be a flex cable or other component, not the board-level trace defect.
⚠ Battery — approaching service threshold
At four years old, SE 2022 batteries vary widely — casual users are typically at 84–88%, while heavy users may already be below 80% and experiencing throttling. The SE 2022 has a larger battery than the SE 2020 (2,018mAh vs 1,821mAh) which helps, but four years of charge cycles still takes a toll.
Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Below 85% for a device you plan to keep 2+ more years — replacement now is the sensible choice.
⚠ Hydra charging IC — Lightning charging fault
The Hydra IC on the SE 2022 is susceptible to damage from cheap, uncertified Lightning cables and power surges — same as all Lightning iPhone models. If your SE 2022 won't charge via Lightning but charges wirelessly, that's ~80% Hydra IC and ~20% charging port. Free diagnostic confirms which before any work is quoted.
Use Apple MFi-certified Lightning cables only. The SE 2022 is the last SE model — keep it well maintained.
✅ Component interchangeability — SE 2020, SE 2022, and iPhone 8 share most parts
The iPhone SE 2020, SE 2022, and iPhone 8 are built around the same chassis design and share the majority of their hardware components. Apple essentially took the iPhone 8's body and upgraded the internals across each SE generation. Understanding this helps explain both why parts are widely available and where the differences lie.
Interchangeable parts across SE 2020, SE 2022, and iPhone 8:
- Display / screen — fully interchangeable between SE 2020, SE 2022, and iPhone 8. Important: when swapping screens, the True Tone calibration data must be copied from the original display to the replacement — we transfer this data as part of every SE screen replacement to preserve accurate colour temperature.
- Frame / chassis — the aluminium frame is interchangeable across all three models. Colour swaps between SE 2020 and SE 2022 are straightforward.
- Charging port (Lightning) — the charging port flex is interchangeable. Note for SE 2020 restart repairs: only confirmed OEM pull charging ports should be used — the mic1 thermal sensor must be present on the flex.
- Rear camera — the 12MP single rear camera module is interchangeable across SE 2020, SE 2022, and iPhone 8.
- Other shared components — speakers, buttons, Taptic Engine, and antennas are all cross-compatible across the three models.
The one key difference — batteries (not interchangeable):
- iPhone 8 battery: 1,821 mAh
- iPhone SE 2020 battery: 1,821 mAh — identical to the iPhone 8
- iPhone SE 2022 battery: 2,018 mAh — larger capacity, unique to the SE 2022
The motherboard is also unique to each model — the SE 2020 uses an A13 chip, the SE 2022 uses an A15, and the iPhone 8 uses an A11. Every other major component is shared. This makes parts sourcing straightforward and repair costs competitive across all three models.
⚠ NAND storage failure — iTunes / DFU mode, P15 programmer repair
NAND flash storage wear is increasingly appearing on iPhone SE 2022 devices — particularly heavily used units or those that have been close to full storage capacity for extended periods. The NAND chip has a finite number of read/write cycles, and when it begins to fail the device presents with symptoms that look like software problems.
What many shops get wrong: Repeated DFU restores charged as "software repair" without diagnosing the hardware fault. A failing NAND cannot be fixed by any restore — the restore itself fails because the NAND cannot complete the write process. Error codes 4013, 9, 14, or 21 during restore, or DFU loops that never complete, point to NAND.
The repair: NAND chip replaced using the P15 NAND programmer, which correctly programs the replacement chip with the device's unique identifiers. We recommend upgrading to 256GB when replacing NAND — the board is already open and the upgrade cost is minimal relative to the total repair.
If your iPhone SE 2022 is stuck in iTunes or DFU mode with repeated restore failures — bring it in for a free board diagnostic before attempting more software restores.

Does the iPhone SE 2022 have the same board defect as the SE 2020 — no touch and 3-minute restart?
No. The PCB trace defect under the SIM tray that causes no-touch and mic1 restart on the SE 2020 is specific to that generation's board layout. The SE 2022 uses a different internal design and we have not seen this fault pattern on 2022 units.
Is the iPhone SE 2022 really the last iPhone with a Home button and Touch ID?
Yes — the SE 2022 is the last iPhone Apple made with both a physical Home button and Touch ID fingerprint unlock. The iPhone 16e replaced the SE line in 2025 with Face ID and USB-C. If you want Touch ID on a current-platform iPhone, the SE 2022 is the end of the line.
My SE 2022 battery only lasts half a day — when should I replace it?
Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. At 4 years old, heavy users may be at or below 80%. Below 80% Apple recommends replacement. Below 85% on a device you plan to keep for 2+ more years, replacement now makes sense — it's the most impactful single repair on this model.
Is the SE 2022 screen the same as the iPhone 8 and SE 2020?
Yes — the display is interchangeable across iPhone 8, SE 2020, and SE 2022. True Tone calibration data must be transferred from the original screen when swapping — we do this on every replacement to maintain accurate colour temperature. The panel itself is identical across all three models.
My SE 2022 won't charge on Lightning but wireless charging works — Hydra IC or port?
~80% Hydra IC, ~20% Lightning port. Cheap uncertified cables damage the Hydra IC over time. Free diagnostic confirms which. Use Apple MFi-certified cables only — the SE 2022 is the last Lightning SE and worth protecting.
What is the battery difference between the SE 2020 and SE 2022?
The SE 2022 has a meaningfully larger battery — 2,018 mAh vs the SE 2020's 1,821 mAh (which is the same as the iPhone 8). The SE 2022 batteries are not cross-compatible between models despite sharing the same chassis. Always confirm the correct battery spec when ordering.
Is it worth keeping an iPhone SE 2022 versus upgrading to the iPhone 16e?
If your SE 2022 is in good condition, a battery replacement extends its life by 2–3 years at a fraction of the upgrade cost. The main case for the 16e is USB-C and Face ID. If neither matters to you and you love the compact form factor, repair is the better value decision.
Does the iPhone SE 2022 support 5G?
Yes — 5G was the headline feature of the SE 2022 over the SE 2020. It's compatible with all South African 5G networks. The SE 2020 is 4G LTE only.
