How we do it

The iPhone earpiece speaker — the small driver at the top of the phone used for phone calls and FaceTime audio — is distinct from the loudspeaker. It sits beneath the earpiece grille and is connected via a flex cable routed under the screen assembly. Earpiece failure presents as muffled calls, no audio during calls while the loudspeaker works normally, or intermittent audio that improves when the top of the screen is pressed.

Earpiece speaker replacement requires screen removal and careful routing of the new flex cable. On Face ID iPhone models, the earpiece is integrated with or adjacent to the TrueDepth assembly housing — the procedure requires the same care around the dot projector. iAssist uses OEM earpiece assemblies on all models; aftermarket earpiece speakers consistently produce inferior call audio quality.

Can't hear caller — loudspeaker works fine

Classic earpiece failure. The loudspeaker (bottom) works for speakerphone but the earpiece (top) produces no audio during normal calls.

Muffled or distorted call audio

Earpiece membrane partially damaged. Call audio present but quality severely degraded. Replacement restores clear call audio.

Earpiece works when screen pressed

Flex cable partially disconnected or fatigued. Pressure restores contact temporarily. Flex replacement or reconnection resolves.

My iPhone has no sound during calls but speakerphone works — is that the earpiece?

Yes — speakerphone uses the bottom loudspeaker, which bypasses the earpiece. Silent or muffled ear-held calls = earpiece fault.

Is there an Apple recall for the iPhone 12 Pro earpiece?

Yes — Apple issued a service programme for a known earpiece defect on certain 12 Pro units causing distorted or absent call audio. Check your serial number at support.apple.com. Out-of-programme repairs at iAssist: R1,000.

Why is earpiece repair on iPhone 12 series more complex?

The earpiece flex runs through the TrueDepth Face ID assembly. Any replacement performed without microscope precision tears the flex and permanently destroys Face ID.

Can I lose Face ID during an earpiece repair at iAssist?

My iPhone 17 Pro earpiece has no sound after a drop — is that the flex?

The earpiece flex on the 17 Pro tears easily in the Dynamic Island assembly from drops to the top edge. We diagnose whether it's the flex, module, or board-level audio codec issue.

Will earpiece repair fix Siri not hearing me?

The earpiece is a speaker, not a microphone. If Siri isn't hearing you, that's the microphone on the top flex. We check both during the diagnostic.

How long does earpiece repair take?

30–45 minutes on most models. iPhone 12 series: 60–90 minutes for microscope work.

My iPhone earpiece crackles at high volume — is that the earpiece or connection?

Crackling suggests damaged earpiece membrane or a partially disconnected connector. We check the connector first before recommending full replacement.
