The iPhone 12 Pro Max introduced sensor-shift OIS to the iPhone lineup — a first — and the largest battery in the 12 series at 3,687 mAh. Apple's first 5G-capable Pro Max used flat-edged surgical stainless steel before the 15 series transitioned to titanium. The 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED runs at 60Hz — unlike the 13 Pro Max which introduced ProMotion — but LiDAR, triple camera, and 5G remain capable at 4–5 years old.
At 228g the 12 Pro Max is one of the heaviest iPhones produced. The large protruding camera module is particularly exposed to impact. Glass-only OLED refurbishment is available where the OLED beneath is undamaged and saves substantially versus full screen replacement.

⚠ Under-display touch and proximity flex — unique to the 12 Pro Max
The iPhone 12 Pro Max was the first iPhone to place the touch digitiser underneath the OLED panel rather than integrated into it. This introduced a new fault: if the proximity flex is damaged or disconnected, it can simultaneously cause a bootloop every 3 minutes AND break Face ID — because both signals run through the same area. A proximity flex fault on the 12 Pro Max needs to be addressed before either fault can be diagnosed independently.

⚠ Earpiece replacement and Face ID — critical connection
The earpiece flex on the 12 Pro Max is directly linked to the Face ID TrueDepth assembly. Replacing the earpiece without preserving the original TrueDepth components destroys Face ID. We always perform this under microscope to preserve Face ID.

My 12 Pro Max won't charge on Lightning — Hydra IC or port?
~80% Hydra IC, ~20% Lightning port. Wireless charges normally but Lightning doesn't = strong indicator of Hydra IC fault. Free diagnostic confirms before any work begins.
My 12 Pro Max is stuck in DFU mode with repeated restore failures — NAND?
Yes. Error 4013 or 9 on a 5-year-old 12 Pro Max during repeated restores is NAND flash storage failure. We replace using the P15 programmer. 256GB upgrade recommended at the same time.
My iPhone 12 Pro Max battery drains significantly faster than it used to — is that expected?
Yes at 5 years old. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Below 80% triggers throttling and accelerated drain. Most 12 Pro Max batteries are approaching or below this threshold. Battery replacement restores full performance.
