iPhone Charging IC RepairJohannesburg, Pretoria & Gauteng
🔌 Hydra IC · SN2012027 USB-C IC · Micro-Soldering · Assessment + QuoteCharging IC failure is one of the most common board-level faults we see — and one of the most misdiagnosed. The Hydra IC (Lightning models, iPhone 8–14) and SN2012027 USB-C IC plus its paired 8N/Q4EE EEPROM (iPhone 15+) manage all charging communication. When they fail, the device won't charge via cable but continues wirelessly. Primary cause: cheap, uncertified chargers. This is a micro-soldering repair — assessment and quote before any work.

How we do itThe iPhone 15 and 16 series introduced a new USB-C charging architecture managed by the Hydra charging IC (U9500). A specific failure pattern — iPhone sticking at exactly 1% battery with the display unresponsive to touch — is caused by Hydra IC failure or the associated SN2012027 USB-C retimer. This is board-level micro-soldering work under a stereo microscope, not a parts-swap repair.
Earlier iPhone models use a different charging architecture. The Tigris charging IC on iPhone 8 through 14, and Tristar on earlier models, fail differently — presenting as no charge, very slow charge, or device only charging on specific cables at specific angles. iAssist diagnoses the exact failed component using DC power supply current measurement and schematic reference before quoting any work.
iPhone 15/16 stuck at 1% — no touch
Classic Hydra IC (U9500) failure signature. The iPhone charges to exactly 1% and the touch screen becomes unresponsive. Board-level IC replacement resolves.
Won't charge at all after liquid damage
Charging IC is vulnerable to liquid ingress. Board cleaning and IC assessment before replacement.
Very slow charging — 5W on a 20W charger
Charging IC fault causing negotiation failure. iPhone reverts to 5W fallback. IC replacement restores fast charge negotiation.
Only charges on Apple cables
MFi authentication failure in the charging management circuit. Third-party cables rejected. Tristar/Hydra IC assessment.
Charges but battery percentage doesn't rise
Charging IC delivering power to the board but not to the battery management circuit. Requires schematic tracing to identify the specific fault.
USB-C data not working — iPhone 15+
USB-C data controller (SN2012027 retimer) separate from charging IC. Data transfer failure with charging working normally points to retimer fault.
iAssist uses a JBC micro-soldering station with a stereo microscope and digital camera at 40× magnification for all charging IC work. The U9500 Hydra IC on iPhone 15/16 is a 0.4mm pitch BGA package — rework requires bismuth-tin solder paste, a hot air rework station calibrated to the specific thermal profile of the board, and a PCIe-connected programmer to flash the EEPROM after IC replacement. DC power supply measurement via the J1 test pad identifies the fault signature before any component is removed. The SN2012027 USB-C retimer is diagnosed separately using USB-C protocol analyser equipment.
Our iphone charging ic repair process
Diagnostic
Wireless charging confirmed working. Multiple cable tests. Board reading to confirm IC vs port fault.
Microscope inspection
Logic board inspected under microscope — burn marks, lifted pads, secondary damage assessed.
IC replacement
Hydra IC or SN2012027 + EEPROM replaced via micro-soldering. 16 Pro series: sandwich board separation required.
Programming & test
On 16 series, JCID programmer configures the replacement IC pair. Full charging test after repair.

Charges wirelessly but not on cable — IC or port?
80% charging IC, 20% port. Wireless charging bypasses the charging IC, which is why wireless works when the IC fails. Free diagnostic confirms which.
What is the Hydra IC and why does it fail?
The Hydra IC manages all Lightning charging authentication on iPhones 8 through 14. It fails when cheap, uncertified cables are used — they don't include the correct authentication chip, and unfiltered current causes progressive damage.
What is the SN2012027 and 8N/Q4EE EEPROM?
The SN2012027 is the USB-C Power Delivery controller. The 8N/Q4EE is its cryptographically paired EEPROM. Both must come from the same donor board when replaced. Replacing only the SN2012027 without the correct EEPROM leaves the phone drawing only ~0.1A.
Why is charging IC repair on iPhone 16 Pro more expensive?
The 8N/Q4EE EEPROM on the 16 Pro sits on the lower layer of the sandwich logic board. Accessing it requires board separation — a precise, time-consuming procedure.
My iPhone 15 is stuck at 1% and won't charge past it — is that the IC?
Yes — stuck at 1% with cable plugged in is a classic SN2012027 USB-C IC fault. Free board diagnostic confirms before any micro-soldering is quoted.
Will my iPhone charge again after IC repair?
If the IC is the fault and the board has no secondary damage — yes, full charging is restored. We inspect under microscope for secondary damage before quoting.
How do I prevent charging IC failure?
Use only Apple or MFi-certified Lightning and USB-C cables. Avoid furniture USB ports, car chargers, and petrol station cables.
Does charging IC repair require board removal?
Yes — the IC is soldered to the logic board. Board removed, inspected under microscope, IC replaced via BGA micro-soldering.
