⚠ Battery degradation — critical at 7 years
At seven years old, battery replacement is no longer optional for most users. Seven years of daily charge cycles leaves most batteries well below Apple's 80% service threshold — and many at 65–75%. At this level, iOS performance throttling is fully active, daily battery life is significantly shorter, and unexpected shutdowns at 15–30% charge are common.
Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Below 80% is Apple's service recommendation. Same-day battery replacement available at our Silvamonte centre.

⚠ Hydra charging IC failure — Lightning charging fault at this age
The Hydra IC manages all Lightning charging communication on this generation. After 7 years of cheap uncertified cable use or power surges, failure is increasingly common. Symptoms: "This accessory may not be supported", won't charge on Lightning but works wirelessly, won't appear in iTunes/Finder, slow charging.
Charges wirelessly but not via Lightning?
~80% Hydra IC, ~20% Lightning port. Free diagnostic confirms which before any work begins.
Micro-soldering repair. Use only Apple MFi-certified Lightning cables to prevent Hydra IC damage.
⚠ Face ID / TrueDepth camera — JCID repair, R1,500 if fixable
We use the JCID tag on flex method to repair TrueDepth camera faults and restore Face ID where the fault is a repairable component. If the IR camera itself has failed — cryptographically paired at the factory — Face ID cannot be recovered. We diagnose this specifically and advise before charging anything.
Price: R1,500 if repairable. No charge for diagnostic if it turns out to be the IR camera.
⚠ Random rebooting every 3 minutes — thermalmonitord panic, R250 diagnostic
The thermalmonitord sensor-detection reboot pattern applies to this model. The device reboots every 2–3 minutes when a required sensor loses communication. The panic log shows: "Missing sensor(s): Prs0" (barometric sensor on the charging port flex) or "Missing sensor(s): mic2" (secondary microphone on the power button flex). Both are easily damaged by drops, cracked back glass, or back glass laser repairs.
OEM pull parts required — cheap aftermarket flexes frequently lack the sensors. R250 diagnostic — panic log read first, credited against repair cost.
Software restore does nothing for a hardware sensor bootloop. Bring it in for a panic log diagnostic.
The iPhone XR is now at an age where NAND flash storage wear is a regular repair we see. The NAND chip stores iOS, all apps, photos, and data — and after years of daily read and write operations, worn sectors and degraded write speeds cause failures that look like software problems but are not.
What many shops get wrong: When a device is stuck in iTunes or DFU mode with restore failing, most shops attempt repeated DFU restores — sometimes charging for a "software repair" — without diagnosing the actual NAND hardware fault. A NAND failure cannot be resolved by any software restore. The restore fails because the NAND chip cannot complete the write process reliably.
Symptoms: Stuck in iTunes / recovery mode with error codes 4013, 9, 14, or 21 during restore. DFU restore loop that always fails. Inexplicably slow performance even with a new battery. Bootloop that software cannot resolve.
The repair: We use the P15 NAND programmer to replace and correctly program the NAND chip — including the device's unique serial number, Wi-Fi address, and baseband data. Without correct programming the device will not activate after NAND replacement.
Upgrade to 256GB recommended: Since the board is open and the micro-soldering work is already being performed, we recommend upgrading to 256GB at the same time. Fresh chip, maximum write cycles remaining, significantly more storage — for minimal additional cost over the base NAND replacement.

My iPhone XR charges wirelessly but won't charge via Lightning — what's causing this?
~80% of the time it's the Hydra charging IC on the logic board — damaged by cheap uncertified Lightning cables over years of use. ~20% is the Lightning port itself worn from daily use. Free diagnostic confirms which before we quote anything.
Is the iPhone XR screen LCD or OLED — and can the glass be repaired separately?
LCD — Apple called it Liquid Retina. No OLED burn-in risk, but the glass and LCD panel cannot be separated for glass-only refurbishment. Screen replacement on the XR is a full LCD assembly replacement.
Why does my iPhone XR restart every 2–3 minutes on a precise timer?
This is a thermalmonitord sensor fault. Check the panic log: Settings → Privacy → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data → panic-full file. 'Missing sensor(s): Prs0' means charging port flex. Can Face ID be repaired on the iPhone XR?

My iPhone XR is stuck in iTunes mode with error 4013 — NAND or a software issue?
Error 4013 during repeated restore attempts is a NAND flash storage fault, not software. The NAND chip is worn and cannot complete the iOS write process. We replace it using the P15 programmer and recommend upgrading to 256GB at the same time.
How long does iPhone XR battery replacement take?
