How we do it
The iPhone loudspeaker — the bottom-firing driver used for media playback, speakerphone, and notifications — sits in the bottom chassis alongside the charging port and is accessible without full screen disassembly on most models. Loudspeaker failure most commonly presents as distorted audio at medium-to-high volume, crackling or rattling, or complete audio failure from the bottom while the earpiece still works.
Water damage and debris ingress through the speaker grille are the primary causes. Lint, sand, and fine debris pack into the speaker mesh causing gradual volume reduction — often mistaken for hardware failure when a thorough clean restores full function. iAssist always attempts speaker mesh cleaning before recommending module replacement. Where the membrane is damaged, OEM replacement restores the original audio profile.
Distorted audio at medium volume
Most common symptom. The speaker produces sound but it crackles, rattles, or sounds 'blown.' Membrane damage — module replacement required.
No audio from bottom — earpiece works
Loudspeaker has failed completely while the earpiece (used for calls) still functions. Module replacement restores full audio.
Very quiet speaker
Volume significantly lower than when new. Debris packed into the mesh is the most common cause. Professional cleaning before replacement.
Audio crackling after water exposure
Moisture in the speaker membrane causes distortion. Allow to dry and attempt cleaning — membrane may recover. Replacement if distortion persists.
Buzzing on incoming calls
Rattle caused by loose speaker mount or debris vibrating inside the grille. Cleaning and inspection resolves most rattle issues.
Speaker after drop damage

My iPhone bottom speaker sounds muffled — is that damage or blocked?
Both possible. Lint in the speaker mesh causes muffled audio that improves with cleaning. Corrosion from water causes distortion that worsens over time. We clean first.
How do I test which speaker is broken?
Play music and cover the bottom of the phone — you should hear the top earpiece continue. Cover the top and listen to the bottom. If one side is significantly quieter or distorted, that's the faulty speaker.
My iPhone makes a rattling from the bottom — is that the speaker?
Could be the Taptic Engine, speaker membrane, or a loose component. Each has a different sound character. We listen and diagnose before recommending any repair.
Can water damage to the speaker be fixed?
Partial water exposure causing muffled audio can often be improved with ultrasonic cleaning. Salt water or significant corrosion typically requires module replacement.
My iPhone 8 is mono — did the bottom speaker always sound like that?
Yes — iPhone 8 and SE series are mono speakers. Only Face ID models have true stereo. If your 8 sounds muffled, that's the single speaker underperforming — cleaning or replacement resolves it.
Will bottom speaker replacement affect Face ID?
No — the bottom speaker is separate from both Face ID (top) and Touch ID (Home button).
How long does bottom speaker repair take?

Is speaker distortion at high volume normal?
Some distortion at maximum volume is normal. Distortion at moderate volumes or on specific frequencies indicates speaker membrane damage.
