📱 Released 2025 · A19 Pro · Titanium · 6.9" ProMotion · Camera Control · Action Button · 5× TetraprismSpecialist repair for the iPhone 17 Pro Max across Gauteng. The 17 Pro Max is Apple's current flagship — 6.9" ProMotion Always-On display, A19 Pro chip, Camera Control and Action Button, advanced 5× tetraprism camera system in a premium titanium chassis. We are fully equipped for all iPhone 17 Pro Max repairs from launch.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max retains the periscope telephoto lens system introduced with the 15 Pro Max — a folded-optics design that achieves 5× optical zoom within the slim chassis by routing light horizontally through a prism before it reaches the sensor. The periscope module is the most complex and expensive rear camera assembly on any iPhone; a cracked periscope lens cover or damaged module requires careful assessment to determine whether lens cover replacement alone is sufficient or whether the full assembly needs replacement.

Known issues on the iPhone 17 Pro Max — read before booking
⚠ Aluminium frame — dents and scratches from minor drops ("Scratchgate")
Apple switched the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max from the titanium frame used on the 15 Pro and 16 Pro series back to aluminium — and the difference in durability is immediately noticeable in real-world use. The move was made to improve heat dissipation alongside the new vapor chamber cooling system, but the trade-off is a frame that dents and scratches significantly more easily than the titanium predecessor.
The issue — widely referred to online as "Scratchgate" — is twofold:
- Denting from small drops: A minor drop from waist height — even inside a pouch or soft case — can produce a significant corner dent. Users report damage on the very first drop that would have left a titanium or stainless steel iPhone untouched. The soft aluminium deforms on impact in a way that titanium does not.
- Anodizing chips revealing bare aluminium: The coloured anodized finish on the frame chips off on impact, exposing the silver-grey raw aluminium underneath. On dark coloured models — deep blue, Cosmic Orange — the bare aluminium contrast is very visible. The anodized layer is a surface treatment, not paint, and once the underlying aluminium is exposed it cannot simply be touched up.
What iAssist offers: We perform complete frame swaps on the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. All internal components are migrated to a fresh chassis frame — logic board, battery, cameras, flex cables, and buttons — and the device is fully reassembled and tested. A case is strongly recommended for caseless users on this model, but where the damage has already happened, a frame swap restores the device to like-new condition.
If you have an iPhone 17 Pro with a dented or scratched frame, bring it in for a free assessment — we quote the frame swap after evaluating the extent of the damage and parts availability.
✅ Vapor chamber cooling — first year on iPhone Pro models
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are the first Pro iPhones to include a vapor chamber thermal system — the same cooling technology used in high-performance Android flagships and gaming phones. The vapor chamber distributes heat away from the A19 Pro chip and other hot components far more efficiently than the graphite thermal spreader used in previous iPhone Pro models.
This is one of the primary reasons Apple switched from titanium back to aluminium on the 17 Pro — aluminium has significantly higher thermal conductivity than titanium, working in combination with the vapor chamber to manage heat under sustained workloads like video recording, gaming, and Apple Intelligence processing. The practical result is better sustained performance and less thermal throttling during intensive tasks than on the 15 Pro or 16 Pro.
⚠ Opens from the front again — reversed from iPhone 16 series
The entire iPhone 16 lineup opened from the back for internal repairs — a welcome repairability improvement. The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max have reversed this, returning to opening from the front for most internal access. The reason is not fully clear, but it is likely related to the new vapor chamber layout and the aluminium chassis structural design requiring different internal access paths.
For repair purposes: battery replacement, camera work, and other internal repairs on the 17 Pro again require screen removal as the first step — adding complexity compared to the 16 Pro. The risk of screen damage during unrelated repairs also returns. We factor this into our repair process and turnaround times on the 17 Pro.
⚠ Earpiece flex cable — tears easily, causing no sound during calls
The earpiece (top speaker / receiver) on the iPhone 17 Pro sits within the Dynamic Island housing at the top of the device. The flex cable connecting it to the motherboard has proven to be particularly prone to tearing on this model — we are seeing this come through in early units. The earpiece flex runs through a tight path in the top assembly, and any stress from a drop to the top of the device, or from an aggressive screen removal attempt, can tear or sever it.
When the earpiece flex tears: The most immediate symptom is no sound during phone calls held to the ear — speakerphone continues to work via the bottom speaker. On the 17 Pro, the earpiece also contributes to the stereo audio spread for media playback, so music may sound noticeably unbalanced.
Board-level involvement: If a new earpiece module does not resolve the no-sound issue, or if speaker icons are greyed out during calls, the fault may lie in the interposer connection between the two layers of the sandwich logic board — the audio codec's connection can fracture on drops. This is a micro-soldering repair requiring separation of the logic board layers and reballing of the interposer connection points.
Bring it in for a free diagnostic — we determine whether the fault is the earpiece module, the flex cable, or the board-level audio codec connection before recommending any repair.
⚠ Random rebooting — panic log diagnostics, R250 assessment
Random rebooting on the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max follows the same hardware sensor detection pattern seen across modern iPhone generations. We read the iOS panic log file first and identify the exact fault before replacing any component. R250 diagnostic — credited toward the repair if you proceed.
Common causes:
- Charging port flex — the bottom flex integrating the USB-C charging connector and associated sensors. Easily damaged by water, hard drops, or when a back glass repair is performed with a bad or aftermarket replacement. Causes random reboots every 2–5 minutes or a continuous 3-minute restart cycle.
- Power button flex — the power/side button flex on the iPhone 17 Pro wraps around the logic board area. A damaged power button flex can send continuous reset signals to power management. Keep a known-good OEM power button flex on the bench for diagnostic testing.
- Back glass / wireless charging flex — after a back glass repair, the iPhone restarts every few minutes if the wireless charging flex has been disturbed or damaged. Use OEM or premium pull parts only — the flex contains a paired IC.
Reading the panic log: Settings → Privacy → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data → files starting with "panic-full" → most recent file. Look for "SMC PANIC — ASSERTION FAILED" followed by "Sensor Array" and a value beginning with "23...." — this is the 17 Pro identifier. The specific sensor array value points to which component is at fault.
Always replace with OEM or premium quality flexes — aftermarket flexes have a high defect rate and can themselves cause the same restart symptoms, wasting diagnostic time. A software restore does nothing for hardware sensor-caused bootloops.

Why does the iPhone 17 Pro Max frame dent so easily?
Apple switched back to aluminium from titanium on the 17 Pro Max for better thermal performance with the new vapor chamber cooling system. Aluminium dents significantly more easily than titanium — even moderate drops cause visible corner dents. iAssist offers complete frame swaps on the 17 Pro Max.
My 17 Pro Max has no ear sound during calls but speakerphone works — earpiece flex?
Very likely. The earpiece flex runs through the tight Dynamic Island assembly and tears easily from drops to the top edge. If speakerphone works but ear speaker doesn't, we diagnose whether it's the flex, the module, or a board-level audio codec connection before recommending any repair.
My 17 Pro Max restarts randomly — 'SMC PANIC Sensor Array 23...' in the panic log?
Yes — '23...' is the 17 Pro Max panic log identifier. The specific sensor array value points to which component is at fault. R250 diagnostic — we read the panic log before replacing any flex or part.
What is the vapor chamber on the 17 Pro Max?
First-generation vapor chamber in an iPhone Pro — a flat liquid-filled heat spreader that distributes heat from the A19 Pro chip more efficiently than previous thermal designs. Reduces throttling during intensive tasks like 4K video, gaming, and AI processing.
Why does the 17 Pro Max open from the front again?
The 17 Pro reversed the 16 series back-opening design. Likely related to the vapor chamber layout requiring different internal access. Battery and board repairs require screen removal again — we factor the additional time into repair estimates.
Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max frame swap available at iAssist?
Yes — we perform complete frame swaps on the 17 Pro Max. All components migrate correctly and pair after the swap. Bring the device in for a free frame assessment — we confirm parts availability and quote before any work begins.
Does the iPhone 17 Pro Max have Camera Control?
Yes. If Camera Control is damaged from a drop, individual button replacement is very difficult. We replace the enclosure or midframe — all paired components transfer correctly.
Does iAssist transfer paired components during 17 Pro Max screen replacement?
Yes — always. Component transfer from original to replacement screen prevents the 'Important Display Message.' Allow 2–3 hours. Included as standard at iAssist.
