How we do it
iPhones have three microphones: one at the bottom (primary voice microphone), one at the top (secondary noise cancellation), and one near the rear camera (video recording microphone). Each can fail independently, producing specific symptom patterns — callers can't hear you clearly (bottom mic), speakerphone calls sound echoey (top mic), or video recordings capture no ambient audio (rear mic).
Microphone failure is commonly caused by moisture ingress — even from steam, condensation, or high-humidity environments — or physical damage during a prior repair. The bottom microphone is adjacent to the charging port and vulnerable to the same debris and moisture. iAssist diagnoses each microphone independently using voice memos and call tests before recommending the specific repair scope.
Callers can't hear you
Bottom microphone failure. Voice memos will also show no audio pickup. Common after water exposure or charging port area damage.
Echo on speakerphone calls
Top microphone failure. Speakerphone uses the top mic for noise cancellation — without it, the caller hears echo. Voice memos at the top of the device show the fault.
Video recordings have no audio
Rear microphone failure. Videos are silent or very low volume. Camera-adjacent mic handles video recording audio.
Siri not picking up voice
Could be bottom or top microphone depending on orientation when activated. Simple voice memo test at different positions confirms which mic is affected.
Mic works but sounds muffled
Debris in the microphone port or membrane damage. Port cleaning attempted before replacement. Muffled audio often resolves with cleaning.
All microphones failed simultaneously
Points to a software issue or audio IC failure rather than individual microphone damage. Free diagnostic determines cause before recommending repair.

My iPhone callers can't hear me during calls — which microphone is that?
For standard calls held to the ear — the top microphone (mic1). For speakerphone calls — the bottom microphone (mic2, on the charging port flex). We test both with Voice Memos.
Siri says it can't hear me but calls are fine — which microphone is faulty?
Siri primarily uses the bottom microphone (mic2). If calls held to the ear are clear but Siri doesn't hear you — bottom mic or its connection is faulty.
My iPhone 11 restarts every 3 minutes and callers can't hear me — are those related?
Yes — both faults point to the charging port flex. The bottom microphone (mic2) lives on that flex. When the flex is damaged, mic2 disappears — causing both the caller audio fault and the thermalmonitord 3-minute restart loop.
My video recordings have no audio — which microphone?
Video uses the rear microphone (near or behind the rear camera housing). If video audio is absent but calls and Siri work — rear microphone is at fault.
Can I fix a muffled microphone by cleaning it?
Microphone mesh blocked with lint can improve significantly with professional cleaning. We clean first — if audio is still muffled after cleaning, membrane replacement is needed.
My iPhone was dropped in water and now callers can't hear me — is that the microphone?
Water damage to the microphone is common — the mesh allows water entry. Bring the phone in without charging it. Ultrasonic cleaning can sometimes restore function if treated promptly.
Will microphone replacement affect other functions?
Bottom mic replacement involves the charging port flex which carries sensors on older models. We verify all flex-connected sensor functions after replacement.
How long does microphone repair take?
30–60 minutes for most repairs. Where the fault is on the charging port flex with shared sensors, allow additional time for sensor verification.
