βœ… Component interchangeability β€” iPhone 8 shares most parts with SE 2020 and SE 2022

The iPhone 8 is the chassis that Apple based both SE generations on. Screen, frame, charging port, rear camera, speakers, buttons, and Taptic Engine are all interchangeable across iPhone 8, SE 2020, and SE 2022. This means parts are widely available and sourcing is straightforward.

Battery β€” unique per model: The iPhone 8 and SE 2020 share the same 1,821 mAh battery. The SE 2022 uses a larger 2,018 mAh cell β€” not cross-compatible. Only the batteries and motherboards are unique to each model.

Screens β€” True Tone data transfer required: When swapping screens between any of these three models, the True Tone calibration data from the original display must be transferred to the replacement. We perform this transfer on every screen replacement across iPhone 8, SE 2020, and SE 2022.

⚠ Battery β€” critical at 8 years

At eight years old, iPhone 8 batteries are severely degraded. Most units we see are at 60–75% health β€” below Apple's 80% threshold by a significant margin. At this level, iOS throttling is aggressive, daily battery life is measured in hours rather than a full day, and unexpected shutdowns at 20–30% charge are common.

Battery replacement is the single most impactful repair on the iPhone 8. Check Settings β†’ Battery β†’ Battery Health. Same-day replacement at our Silvamonte centre.

⚠ Back glass β€” first glass-backed iPhone, laser removal required

The iPhone 8 was the first iPhone to use a glass back β€” required for wireless charging since aluminium blocks wireless charging signals. The glass back cracks easily and requires a laser machine for correct removal. At eight years old, back glass cracks are very common.

Cracked back glass does not always stop wireless charging β€” but severe cracks or missing glass can disrupt the wireless coil. Back glass repair restores the device to full wireless charging function.

⚠ Hydra charging IC β€” Lightning charging fault at this age

The Hydra IC managing Lightning charging fails at this age β€” particularly from cheap, uncertified Lightning cables used over 8 years. Won't charge on Lightning, "accessory not supported", charges on wireless but not cable.

Charges wirelessly but not via Lightning?

~80% Hydra IC, ~20% Lightning port. Free diagnostic confirms which. Use Apple MFi-certified cables only.

⚠ NAND storage failure β€” stuck in iTunes mode, slow performance, micro-soldering repair

After eight years of daily read and write operations, the NAND flash storage chip on the iPhone 8 and iPhone X logic board is increasingly showing wear-related failure. The NAND is the chip that stores iOS, all your apps, photos, messages, and every piece of data on the device. Unlike SSDs in computers, smartphone NAND chips have a finite number of write cycles β€” and after 8 years of intensive use, many are worn to the point of developing bad blocks, degraded write speeds, and read errors that the bootloader cannot tolerate.

Common symptoms of NAND wear on the iPhone 8 and X:

  • Stuck in iTunes / recovery mode β€” the iPhone enters recovery mode (lightning cable and iTunes/Finder logo on screen) and cannot complete a restore. iTunes or Finder shows error codes 4013, 9, 14, or 21 during the restore attempt. The restore starts, the progress bar appears, then fails. This is one of the clearest indicators of a NAND timing issue β€” the bootloader cannot read or write to the chip fast enough to complete the iOS installation.
  • Extremely slow performance β€” even with a brand new battery fitted, the device is inexplicably slow. Apps take 30–60 seconds to open. Every operation involves long waits. This is the NAND struggling to serve read requests at speed.
  • Bootloop that does not resolve with a software restore β€” the device restarts continuously and DFU restore fails or produces the same error codes repeatedly.
  • Data corruption β€” apps crash, the OS itself becomes unstable, files become unreadable.

The repair β€” NAND chip replacement (micro-soldering): The original NAND chip must be removed under microscope, the board pads cleaned, and a replacement NAND chip programmed and installed. This requires not just soldering skill but also the ability to correctly program the new chip with the device's unique identifiers (serial number, Wi-Fi address, and baseband data) that are stored on the original NAND. Without correct programming the device will not activate. This is one of the most complex board-level repairs available.

Our recommendation when replacing NAND β€” upgrade to 256GB: If your iPhone 8 or iPhone X is having its NAND replaced, we strongly recommend taking the opportunity to upgrade the storage to 256GB at the same time. The cost of the NAND chip itself is the primary expense β€” and since the board is already open and the micro-soldering work is already being performed, upgrading from 64GB or 128GB to 256GB adds minimal extra cost relative to the total repair. The result is a device with significantly more storage capacity and a fresh NAND chip with maximum remaining write cycles β€” effectively extending the useful life of the device considerably.

If your iPhone 8 or iPhone X is stuck in iTunes mode and restore keeps failing β€” bring it in for a free board diagnostic. We assess the NAND, discuss the repair options and the 256GB upgrade, and quote before any work begins.

iPhone 8 repair β€” frequently asked questions

My iPhone 8 won't charge via Lightning but still charges wirelessly β€” what's wrong?

This is almost always the Hydra charging IC on the logic board β€” roughly 80% of the time. The remaining 20% is a worn Lightning port. Both are caused by cheap, uncertified cables over 8 years of use. We read the fault before replacing anything β€” free diagnostic, quote before any work.

Is it worth replacing the battery on an iPhone 8 in 2026?

Yes β€” the A11 chip still handles calls, messaging, social media, and maps without issue on iOS 18. Battery replacement removes throttling and restores full daily performance. At this age most iPhone 8 batteries are at 60–75%, which means severe throttling is active. It's the best value repair on this device.

My iPhone 8 is stuck in iTunes / DFU mode and the restore keeps failing with error 4013 or 9 β€” what is that?

This is a NAND flash storage fault, not a software issue. The NAND chip is worn after 8 years of read/write cycles and cannot complete the iOS write process. Software restores will always fail. We replace the NAND using the P15 programmer and recommend upgrading to 256GB at the same time β€” board is already open and upgrade cost is minimal.

My iPhone 8 back glass is cracked β€” does wireless charging still work?

It depends. Minor cracks usually don't affect wireless charging. Severe cracks, missing glass, or delamination can disrupt the wireless coil signal underneath. Back glass repair requires a laser machine to remove the original glass and is available at iAssist same-day.

How do I know if my iPhone 8 battery needs replacing?

Go to Settings β†’ Battery β†’ Battery Health. Below 80% is Apple's service threshold. Below 70% β€” common on 8-year-old devices β€” you will experience throttled performance, unexpected shutdowns at 20–30%, and heat during charging. If any of these apply, the battery needs replacing.

Is the iPhone 8 screen LCD or OLED β€” and does it get burn-in?

LCD β€” 4.7" Retina LCD with True Tone. No OLED burn-in risk. Screen replacement on the iPhone 8 is a full LCD assembly β€” the glass and panel come as one unit and cannot be separated for glass-only refurbishment.

Does the iPhone 8 share components with the SE 2020 and SE 2022?

Yes β€” screen, frame, charging port, rear camera, speakers, buttons, and Taptic Engine are all interchangeable across iPhone 8, SE 2020, and SE 2022. The battery is identical between iPhone 8 and SE 2020 (both 1,821 mAh). SE 2022 uses a different 2,018 mAh battery. Only the motherboard is unique to each model.

How long does iPhone 8 screen replacement take at iAssist?

Usually 30–60 minutes for a standard screen replacement. If the True Tone calibration data needs to be transferred from the original panel β€” which we do on every replacement β€” allow up to 90 minutes. Same-day turnaround available at our Silvamonte centre.
