⚠ No touch / unresponsive touchscreen — interposer solder fault
One of the most distinctive known faults on the iPhone XS and XS Max is a complete or partial loss of touchscreen response — not caused by screen damage, but by failing solder joints on the motherboard interposer. The XS and XS Max use a two-layer sandwich logic board. The upper and lower boards connect via a grid of small solder balls. Over time — from age, heat cycles, or drops — these solder joints crack or lose contact, disrupting the touch digitiser signal path.
- Touchscreen completely unresponsive — screen lights up correctly but registers no touch
- Touch works intermittently — responds sometimes but fails randomly
- Dead zones in specific areas of the screen
- Touch failure appeared after a drop or hot environment exposure
- A replacement screen makes no difference — the fault is in the board, not the display
The repair — interposer reball: We remove the old solder balls between the two board layers, clean the pads, apply fresh solder balls, and reflow under microscope. This restores the electrical connection and full touchscreen function. We perform this regularly on the XS and XS Max.

At this age, the iPhone XS and XS Max are no longer supported for battery replacement at most Apple Authorised Service Centres in South Africa — batteries have been discontinued from their supply chains. If you have been told by an authorised repairer that a battery is unavailable, that is accurate for their supply — but not for ours.

⚠ NAND storage failure — stuck in iTunes / DFU mode, P15 programmer repair
The iPhone XS Max is now at an age where NAND flash storage wear is a regular repair we see. The NAND chip stores iOS, all apps, photos, and data — and after years of daily read and write operations, worn sectors and degraded write speeds cause failures that look like software problems but are not.
What many shops get wrong: When a device is stuck in iTunes or DFU mode with restore failing, most shops attempt repeated DFU restores — sometimes charging for a "software repair" — without diagnosing the actual NAND hardware fault. A NAND failure cannot be resolved by any software restore. Error codes 4013, 9, 14, or 21 during restore point directly to NAND.
The repair: We use the P15 NAND programmer to replace and correctly program the NAND — including the device's unique serial number, Wi-Fi address, and baseband data. We recommend upgrading to 256GB at the same time — board is already open, upgrade cost is minimal relative to the total repair.

iPhone XS Max repair — frequently asked questions
My iPhone XS Max touchscreen is completely unresponsive — is that the screen or the logic board?
If a replacement screen shows the same issue, it's the board. The XS Max has a known fault where sandwich board inter-layer solder joints crack after drops, cutting the touch signal. The repair is an interposer reball — not a screen replacement.
Is glass-only refurbishment worth it on the 6.5" OLED of the XS Max?
Strongly yes — the 6.5" OLED is the most expensive component. Glass-only saves significantly vs full replacement where the panel is intact. We assess burn-in during the diagnostic.
My XS Max has a bright green vertical line with no drop history — what caused it?
A known manufacturing defect in a batch of XS Max OLED panels. Appears without drops or damage. Screen replacement resolves it — not caused by the user.
Can Face ID be repaired on the iPhone XS Max?
In many cases yes — JCID tag on flex method, R1,500 if fixable. If the IR camera has failed, Face ID cannot be recovered. Free diagnostic before any charge.
My XS Max charges wirelessly but not via Lightning — is that 80% IC and 20% port?
Yes — that split matches our experience. ~80% is the Hydra charging IC damaged by cheap cables. ~20% is the Lightning port. Free diagnostic confirms which before any work begins.
Is the iPhone XS Max battery still available — authorised centres told me they don't stock it?

My XS Max is stuck in iTunes mode and restore fails with error 4013 — NAND or software?
Error 4013 on repeated restore attempts is NAND flash storage failure. We replace using the P15 programmer. 256GB upgrade strongly recommended at the same time.
Is it worth repairing an iPhone XS Max in 2026?
For battery and screen — yes. The A12 chip is capable. For interposer reball or NAND, assess case by case with us. The 6.5" OLED is worth preserving where repair cost is proportionate to the device's value to you.
