MacBook Pro Repair — Intel & Apple Silicon
Apple classifies older MacBook Pros as vintage after five years and obsolete after seven, at which point authorised repair providers will not repair them. iAssist does. From the pre-2012 Unibody A1278 to the latest M5, we repair every MacBook Pro Apple has ever shipped, at component level. Flexgate displays, butterfly keyboards, swollen batteries, MagSafe and USB-C charging faults, Touch Bar failures, T2 chip power management bugs, liquid damage, dGPU reflows, and board-level logic faults — fixed under a microscope rather than replaced via full board swap. Older Intel MacBook Pros also supported for SSD upgrades and OpenCore Sonoma installs. Every repair backed by a 6-month warranty.

Most shops can swap a part. Far fewer have the microscope, the hot-air rework station, the schematics — or the years of practice it takes to actually repair a logic board. Here's what that means in practice.
Diagnosis under a microscope
Most shops eyeball the board. We examine every MacBook Pro under a stereo microscope, tracing power rails and identifying the specific failed component — a single capacitor, a chip, a corroded trace — rather than blaming the whole board.
The failed part named in your quote
Your written quote tells you exactly which component has failed. "Board fault" isn't a diagnosis — "CD3217B12 USB-C controller, port 2" is. You agree to fix a real fault, not a vague verdict.
We repair the part, not the board
Microsoldering replaces the failed chip or trace and leaves the rest of the board — your SSD, your data, your installed apps — exactly where they were. Full board swaps wipe everything. We don't, where it can be avoided.
Honest verdicts, including "walk away"
When a repair doesn't make sense — a 2011 board with multiple faults, a screen swap on a machine worth less than the part — we say so before any work begins. No padding the bill. No selling you a fix you don't need.
MacBook Pro battery lifespan guide
Apple's MacBook Pro batteries are designed to retain 80% of original capacity through 1000 complete charge cycles. In real-world South African conditions — load-shedding, sustained workloads, ambient heat — replacement is often warranted earlier than that ceiling suggests. macOS will throttle processor performance once battery health drops below 80%, so a fresh battery often restores noticeable speed as well as runtime.
M1 · M2 · M3 · M4 · M5
Typical lifespan: 5–8 years. Apple Silicon MacBook Pros (A2289, A2338, A2442, A2485, A2779, A2780, A2918, A2992, A2991, A3293, A3294, A3295) ship with the most durable batteries Apple has shipped on the MBP. Battery parts A2389, A2519, A2527 depending on chassis. At 500 cycles monitor capacity. By 800 cycles or below 80% health, replacement restores both runtime and full processor speed.
16-inch & 13-inch four-port
Typical lifespan: 4–6 years. Battery parts A2113 (A2141 16-inch 2019), A2171 (A2251/A2289 13-inch 2020). Intel MBPs degrade faster than Apple Silicon under heavy workloads. Below 80% capacity expect noticeable performance loss especially during video calls, Final Cut renders, and multitasking.
13-inch & 15-inch Touch Bar
Typical lifespan: 4–6 years. Battery parts A1819 (A1706/A1708 13-inch 2016-2017), A1820 (A1707 15-inch 2016-2017), A1953 (A1990 15-inch 2018-2019), A1964 (A1989 13-inch 2018-2019). Battery health drops faster on Touch Bar models due to thermals — these models share their battery cavity with hot CPUs.
13-inch & 15-inch Retina
Typical lifespan: 5–7 years. Battery parts A1437 (A1425 13-inch 2012-2013), A1493 (A1502 13-inch 2013-2015), A1417 (A1398 15-inch 2012-2013), A1494 (A1398 15-inch 2013-2015). The 2012-2015 Retina batteries are now well past their service life on most units we see. Replacement is one of the highest-impact upgrades on these models.
Unibody 13/15/17-inch
Vintage territory. Battery parts A1322 (A1278 13-inch 2009-2012), A1382 (A1286 15-inch 2011-2012), A1383 (A1297 17-inch 2011). Original batteries are far past their service life. Replace any visibly swollen battery immediately — swollen cells can warp the keyboard, lift the trackpad, and damage the top case.
Check your cycle count: Apple menu → About This Mac → More Info → System Report → Power. WhatsApp 078 742 4769 with your model and cycle count for a battery replacement quote — confirmed in writing before any work begins.
Known MacBook Pro issues
Each MacBook Pro generation has known design faults that develop over years of use. The most common issues we repair are listed below. All are well-documented and have established repair paths.
Flexgate
The display backlight ribbon cable was made too short, causing it to flex tightly every time the lid opens and closes. After enough cycles the cable cracks. Affects both 13-inch (A1706 / A1708) and 15-inch (A1707) 2016-2017 models. Symptoms: stage-light effect at the bottom of the screen, backlight failing on one side, complete backlight loss. Apple ran a quality program for the 2016 13-inch that has now expired for most; the 15-inch was never covered. We replace the flex cable as a board-level repair on both sizes.
Butterfly keyboard failure
The butterfly-mechanism keyboard introduced in 2015 (1st gen) and refined through 2019 (4th gen) developed a notorious reliability problem. Single particles of dust or crumbs can cause keys to stick, double-register, or stop responding entirely. Apple's Keyboard Service Program covered specific affected models — most have now exited that window. Symptoms: sticky keys, dead keys, double letters, unresponsive space bar.
T2 chip power management
The T2 security chip introduced on 2018 MacBook Pros handles SSD encryption, audio, image signal processing, and power management. T2 firmware bugs and hardware quirks cause random shutdowns, kernel panics, and "battery not charging" warnings even with healthy batteries. Symptoms: random power-off mid-task, refusal to boot after sleep, charging halting at random percentages.
Discrete GPU (dGPU) failure
The 2011-2013 15-inch MacBook Pros with discrete AMD Radeon graphics developed an well-documented failure pattern — the GPU package's solder fails under thermal cycling. Symptoms: black screen on boot, vertical lines, distorted graphics, kernel panic, repeated reboots into safe mode. Apple's Repair Extension Program ended years ago. The fix is to disable the dGPU via terminal and run on integrated graphics — or full GPU reflow / replacement.
Staingate (AR coating delamination)
The 2013-2015 Retina screens used an anti-reflective coating that delaminates with cleaning, screen wipes, or even cloth pressure. Apple ran a Display Replacement Program that has now ended. Symptoms: blotchy white patches on the screen, particularly around the trackpad area. The screen still functions, but the coating blotches are visually disruptive. We can either polish off remaining AR coating (R650) or replace the LCD assembly.
Backlight fuse failure
A small fuse on the logic board controls the LED backlight. Vibration, surges, or liquid intrusion can blow this fuse. Symptoms: screen appears completely dark — but if you shine a torch at the display, you can see the image is still there. The LCD is fine, just no backlight power. Component-level board repair restores backlight.

MacBook Pro repair — frequently asked questions
Do you repair every MacBook Pro, including older models?
Yes. We service every MacBook Pro Apple has ever shipped — from the Unibody pre-2012, through the 2012-2015 Retina, the 2016-2019 Touch Bar era, the 2019-2020 16-inch Intel, and every Apple Silicon model from M1 to M5. Older MacBook Pros are classified as vintage or obsolete by Apple, meaning iStore and authorised repair providers will refuse to service them. We don't. Component-level board repair, screen replacement, battery service, liquid damage recovery — all available. Bring it in for a free diagnostic.
My MacBook Pro has the butterfly keyboard — is it covered by Apple?
MacBook Pros from 2015 through 2019 with butterfly keyboards qualified for Apple's Keyboard Service Program, but that program has now ended for most models. If your MacBook Pro is still under AppleCare or qualifies, start with Apple. If they refuse or your machine is out of the program window, we replace butterfly keyboards directly — full top case swaps for affected 13" and 15" Touch Bar models. The fix is permanent — no more sticky/unresponsive keys.
How much does MacBook Pro repair cost?
Most MacBook Pro repairs fall between R650 and R28,500 depending on the model and fault. Common ranges: battery replacement R1,800-R4,500, screen R3,500-R18,500, keyboard R3,500-R8,500, logic board work R2,500-R12,500, charging port R1,800-R4,500. Apple Silicon and ProMotion displays are at the higher end. Every quote is written and fixed before any work begins. Diagnostic is always free.
Will my MacBook Pro data be safe during repair?
Yes. Our component-level approach replaces failed chips or traces and leaves the rest of the board — your storage, your data, your installed apps — exactly where they were. Full board swaps wipe everything; we don't swap boards where component repair is possible. On Apple Silicon (M1 onwards) storage is integrated into the chip — board-level recovery is the only data path, and that's what we specialise in.
Do you offer MacBook Pro collection across South Africa?
Yes. Across Gauteng — Joburg, Pretoria, East Rand, Centurion — R300 insured door-to-door collection and return via Eliz Courier & Messenger Services. Nationwide — Cape Town, Durban, PE, Bloem, Polokwane, anywhere else — we arrange Courier Guy collection from your door, the MacBook Pro ships to us insured, gets repaired, and returns via the same courier. WhatsApp 078 742 4769 to arrange.
Can the MacBook Pro RAM or SSD be upgraded?
Depends on the model. Pre-2012 Unibody and 2012 non-Retina: yes, both RAM and SSD are upgradeable. 2012-2015 Retina: SSD upgradeable via PCIe blade, RAM soldered. 2016-2019 Touch Bar: SSD soldered (some models have removable storage with proprietary adapter), RAM soldered. M-series (M1-M5): both RAM and SSD are integrated into the chip package — no after-purchase upgrade path. Configure correctly at purchase on Apple Silicon.
Will the Touch Bar repair restore full functionality?
Yes. Touch Bar failures fall into three categories: dead Touch Bar (no display), partial response, or T1/T2 chip-level failure. For dead and partial-response cases we replace the Touch Bar assembly or its connector. T1/T2 chip faults are component-level micro-soldering — fixable but more complex. We diagnose first to determine which type of repair you need. Apple-only authorised repairs swap the whole top case; we keep your case and just replace what's broken — cheaper, faster, no data wipe.
Do you charge to diagnose a MacBook Pro?
No. Diagnosis is always free on arrival, with a written fixed-price quote before any work begins. No R599 assessment fee, no hidden costs. If the repair doesn't make sense — for example, a 2012 MBP with a failed board where a battery + SSD already costs more than the laptop is worth — we'll say so before quoting. No padding the bill, no selling repairs that aren't worth it.
