Cracked or shattered display
Physical impact cracks the display panel or outer glass. On M-series MacBook Pros the display assembly must be replaced as a full unit — panel, glass, and backlight are not separable. On older Intel non-Retina models the glass and LCD can be replaced individually.
Backlight failure — dark screen with faint image
Shine a torch at the screen at an angle. If you see a faint desktop the backlight has failed. Causes: blown backlight fuse, failed backlight IC on logic board, or a damaged display cable in the hinge. Board-level fuse/IC repair or display assembly replacement depending on the fault.
Purple lines, green lines, or colour bands
Vertical lines across the display indicate a damaged display cable, a failed display connector, or a panel fault. Very common on 2016–2019 models where the display cable strains at the hinge. Free diagnostic to determine cable vs panel vs board.
Stage-lighting effect at bottom of screen
A bright arc of light along the bottom edge of the display is caused by a cracked or delaminated backlight diffuser, or a strained display cable on 2016 models. Display assembly replacement resolves this completely.
Black screen — machine turns on but no display
Fan spins, keyboard lights up, but nothing on screen. Causes: failed display cable, damaged display connector, GPU fault on Intel 15-inch models, or a failed T-con board. Free diagnostic to determine the fault path.
Anti-reflective coating peeling — Staingate
Retina MacBook Pros from 2012–2015 are prone to the anti-reflective coating delaminating, leaving cloudy patches across the display. Apple ran a repair programme (now ended). Display assembly replacement resolves Staingate permanently.

Can a MacBook Pro screen be repaired without replacing the whole assembly?
On M-series and Retina Intel models the display assembly is a sealed unit — panel, glass, and backlight cannot be separated. On non-Retina 2008–2012 models the glass and LCD can be replaced independently. Board-level backlight repair is possible on all models without replacing the display.
What is Staingate on a MacBook Pro?
Staingate is the delamination of the anti-reflective coating on 2012–2015 Retina MacBook Pros. It appears as cloudy, oily patches across the display. Display assembly replacement resolves it permanently. Apple's free programme has ended.
My MacBook Pro has purple lines on the display — is it the screen or the cable?
