MacBook Pro Retina 2012–2015 RepairJohannesburg & Gauteng
This MacBook Pro has survived more load shedding cycles than Eskom will ever admit to — and it's still going. The 2012–2015 Retina era gave us the reliable scissor keyboard, upgradeable PCIe blade SSDs, and none of the Touch Bar drama. Two machines: 13-inch A1502 (2013–2015) and 15-inch A1398 (2012–2015). The 15-inch with discrete AMD Radeon is famous for dGPU failure — solder fatigue under thermal cycling kills the GPU package. We can disable the dGPU and run on integrated graphics (R1,500), or reflow/replace it. These machines benefit massively from SSD upgrades (R2,500–R6,500), battery replacements, and OpenCore Sonoma installs (R1,500). At this age, dried-out thermal paste and swollen batteries are our most common walk-ins — both same-day fixes. A 12-year-old Retina with a new SSD, fresh battery, and modern macOS still handles everything short of Final Cut. Most SA shops write these off as "too old" — we disagree. Free diagnostic, R300 Gauteng collection, 6-month warranty.

Common MacBook Pro Retina 2012–2015 Repair faults we see
Staingate — anti-reflective coating delamination
The Retina display anti-reflective coating on 2012–2015 models delaminates leaving oily cloudy patches. Apple's free repair programme has ended. Display assembly replacement is the only permanent fix.
Battery failure — 8–12 year old batteries
All batteries in this range are 8–12 years old and well past their rated 1,000 cycle life. Swelling, rapid drainage, and unexpected shutdowns are common. Battery replacement essential for continued use.
AMD GPU failure — A1398 2013 15-inch
The 2013 15-inch A1398 with AMD Radeon GPU suffers from the same GPU solder joint failure as the 2011 model. Symptoms: coloured lines, screen corruption, random restarts, no display. GPU reball or OCLP dGPU disable.
SSD capacity too small for current macOS
128GB or 256GB SSDs from 2012–2015 fill quickly. SSD blade upgrades available for these models.
OCLP required for Sonoma on 2013–2014 models
2013 and 2014 MacBook Pros require OCLP for Sonoma. iAssist installs and configures OCLP with fresh macOS.
MagSafe 2 port corrosion
MagSafe 2 ports corrode from small liquid spills near the port area. I/O board replacement restores charging.

What is Staingate and can it be fixed?
Staingate is the delamination of the anti-reflective coating on 2012–2015 Retina MacBook Pros. It looks like oily patches or rainbow smears on the display. Display assembly replacement is the permanent fix. Apple's free programme ended in 2023.
Is SSD upgrade possible on Retina 2012–2015?
Yes — these models use a proprietary SSD blade that can be replaced with larger capacity blades. iAssist upgrades from 128GB to 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB.
Can OCLP run Sonoma on a 2015 MacBook Pro?
Yes. 2013 and 2014 models need OCLP for Sonoma. 2015 models may be natively supported depending on exact configuration. iAssist handles OCLP installation.
The 2013 15-inch AMD GPU failure — can it be repaired?
GPU reball is possible — the solder joints are reflowed under the GPU die. Success rate is moderate to good. OCLP can also disable the dGPU and run on integrated graphics only — a free software solution if reball is not economical.
Are 2012–2015 MacBook Pros worth repairing?
Absolutely — with an SSD upgrade, fresh battery, and OCLP Sonoma these machines are genuinely useful for everyday tasks. A 2015 MacBook Pro with upgraded SSD and battery is comfortable for web, email, and Office.
Does the A1398 have a removable SSD?
Yes — the A1398 uses a proprietary SSD blade that is removable and upgradeable.
How long do 2012–2015 MacBook Pro batteries last?
At 8–12 years old with high cycle counts, most original batteries are effectively dead. Battery replacement restores 8–10 hours runtime.
What macOS can the A1502 run natively?
A1502 from 2013–2015 is supported up to Monterey natively. Sonoma requires OCLP.
Can I upgrade RAM on a Retina MacBook Pro?
No — the Retina MacBook Pros have soldered RAM. Non-Retina A1278/A1286 have upgradeable RAM.
How much does Retina MacBook Pro repair cost?
Battery replacement, SSD upgrade, and OCLP installation are the three most common services. Staingate replacement quoted by model. All confirmed before booking.
