USB-C controller IC failure — 2-port and 4-port models

What is the difference between A2251 and A2289?
Both are 13-inch 2020 MacBook Pros with scissor keyboards. A2289 has a 1.4GHz quad-core i5 base configuration. A2251 has a 2GHz quad-core i5 base and includes a Touch Bar on all configurations. Both use USB-C charging only.
Does the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro have a good keyboard?
Yes — the A2141 16-inch returned to the scissor mechanism after the problematic butterfly keyboards on 15-inch models. It is far more reliable.
Why is my 2020 MacBook Pro trackpad hard to click?
Almost certainly a swelling battery. At 4–5 years old, these batteries are commonly swelling. Bring it in immediately — fire risk.
Can the SSD be upgraded in a 2020 MacBook Pro?
The A2251, A2289, and A2141 have proprietary SSD blades that are theoretically removable but are soldered in practice on later revisions. Upgradeable on some configurations — free diagnostic to confirm your specific unit.
Does the 2020 MacBook Pro still support current macOS?
Yes — these models are natively supported by current macOS Sonoma and will continue to receive updates for several more years.
My A2141 16-inch fans run loudly — is this normal?
The 16-inch has a larger thermal envelope than the 13-inch. Under sustained load the fans run. If fans run loudly on light tasks, thermal paste replacement is due.
How long does MacBook Pro 2019–2020 battery last?
New battery lasts 8–11 hours. At 4–5 years with high cycle counts, effective battery life may be 2–4 hours. Battery replacement restores original runtime.
Is the 2019 16-inch worth repairing?
