Common MacBook Pro M5 faults we see
Parts availability — very new model family
The M5 14-inch launched October 2025 and the M5 Pro/Max launched March 2026. Aftermarket parts are extremely limited. Screen assemblies, batteries, and topcases are not yet widely available from South African suppliers. iAssist confirms part availability before booking any M5 repair.
MagSafe 3 port damage
Physical impact, bent pins, or compacted lint in the MagSafe 3 port stops charging. All M5 models also charge via USB-C as a workaround. MagSafe 3 socket replacement is a board-level micro-soldering repair.
Liquid damage — soldered encrypted SSD
All M5 MacBook Pros have a fully soldered SSD with hardware encryption tied to the Secure Enclave. Liquid damage recovery requires micro-soldering to restore the power path before any data recovery attempt. Do not power on after a spill — bring it in immediately.
Touch ID pairing after topcase replacement
Touch ID is cryptographically paired to the Secure Enclave on all Apple Silicon Macs. Topcase replacement breaks fingerprint authentication — Apple Configurator re-pairing is required post-repair. iAssist advises this before any topcase work.
Thunderbolt 5 — M5 Pro/Max only
The M5 Pro and M5 Max have Thunderbolt 5 (up to 120Gb/s) while the base M5 14-inch has Thunderbolt 4. If a Thunderbolt 5 accessory is not performing at expected speeds, confirm the cable and accessory are Thunderbolt 5 rated. Port failure — USB-C board replacement or controller IC repair.
Display assembly — colour and model specific
M5 display assemblies are colour-specific (Silver vs Space Black) and differ between 14-inch base M5, 14-inch M5 Pro/Max, and 16-inch M5 Pro/Max. All use ProMotion Liquid Retina XDR. Replacement parts at a premium on very new models — screen protection strongly recommended.

What is the difference between the M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max MacBook Pro?
The M5 is the base 14-inch model with Thunderbolt 4, launched October 2025. The M5 Pro and M5 Max are the high-end 14 and 16-inch models launched March 2026 — they have more CPU and GPU cores, higher maximum RAM, and Thunderbolt 5 instead of Thunderbolt 4.
Does the MacBook Pro M5 have a Touch Bar?
No. All M5 MacBook Pros use physical function keys with Touch ID in the top-right corner. The Touch Bar was discontinued after the M2 13-inch in 2023.
What ports does the MacBook Pro M5 have?
The base M5 14-inch has three Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, HDMI 2.1, SD card slot, and 3.5mm headphone jack. The M5 Pro and M5 Max have three Thunderbolt 5 ports instead of Thunderbolt 4 — everything else is the same.
Is the MacBook Pro M5 SSD upgradeable?
No. All M-series MacBook Pros have fully soldered SSDs. There is no upgrade path after purchase.
Can the MacBook Pro M5 charge via USB-C?
Yes. All three Thunderbolt ports support charging in addition to MagSafe 3.
Is the M5 Pro faster than the M4 Max?
In CPU tasks the M5 Pro is faster than M4 Max. In GPU and memory bandwidth the M4 Max remains competitive. The M5 Max outperforms both.
How do I identify if I have M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max?
Apple menu → About This Mac. The chip is shown directly. M5 base has model identifier Mac17,2. M5 Pro/Max have Mac17,7/Mac17,9 (14-inch) and Mac17,6/Mac17,8 (16-inch).
