MacBook Pro Touch Bar Repair Johannesburg | iAssist
MacBook Pro Touch Bar RepairJohannesburg & Gauteng
The Touch Bar — Apple's most controversial feature since removing the headphone jack. Nobody asked for it, half of SA never figured out what it did, and now that yours is dead you suddenly miss it. Common faults: completely blank (no display, no input), partial response where some virtual keys work and others don't, or T1/T2 chip-level failure that kills audio and Touch Bar together. We replace the Touch Bar assembly or repair the T1/T2 chip at component level, depending on the actual failure. All 2016-2019 models supported: A1706, A1707, A1989, A1990, A2159, A2141. These machines have survived years of Eskom power cycles and UPS failures — every surge event chips away at T1/T2 chip reliability. iAssist carries Touch Bar assemblies locally for the most common models, so turnaround is typically same-day. Free diagnostic, written quote in Rand, 6-month warranty on parts and labour. Not nearby? R300 Gauteng collection or nationwide courier available.

MacBook Pro Touch Bar problems we fix
Touch Bar completely black — no display
The most common Touch Bar fault. A black Touch Bar usually indicates a failed connection between the Touch Bar strip and the logic board, a failed Touch Bar controller IC, or a software lockup. Software: Force quit TouchBarServer in Activity Monitor or restart. Hardware: Touch Bar assembly replacement.
Touch Bar frozen — not responding to touch
A frozen Touch Bar that shows a static image but doesn't respond to input is usually a software or T1/T2 chip lockup. SMC reset (Shift+Control+Option+Power) resolves software freezes. If it persists after reset, the Touch Bar controller or the Touch Bar assembly has failed.
Lines or dead zones across the Touch Bar strip
Horizontal or vertical lines, dead zones, or flickering on the Touch Bar strip indicate a failing Touch Bar display — the OLED strip has partially failed. Touch Bar assembly replacement.
Touch Bar works intermittently — disappears then returns
Intermittent Touch Bar failure points to a failing connector or a partially broken Touch Bar flex cable. The cable fatigues at the hinge area over years of use. Touch Bar assembly replacement.
Touch ID on Touch Bar not working
Touch ID is integrated into the Touch Bar on Intel 2016–2019 MacBook Pros. If fingerprint recognition fails but the Touch Bar otherwise works, the Touch ID sensor within the Touch Bar has failed. Touch Bar assembly replacement required.
Touch Bar unresponsive after a liquid spill
Liquid on the keyboard can reach the Touch Bar connector via the ribbon cable path. A corrosion clean plus Touch Bar assembly replacement if the strip is damaged.

Which MacBook Pro models have a Touch Bar?
Touch Bar is on: Intel 13-inch 2016–2020 (A1706, A1708, A1989, A2251, A2289), Intel 15-inch 2016–2019 (A1707, A1990), Intel 16-inch 2019–2020 (A2141), M1 13-inch 2020–2022 (A2338), and M2 13-inch 2022 (A2338). M1 Pro/Max, M2 Pro/Max, M3, and M4 MacBook Pros use physical function keys — no Touch Bar.
My Touch Bar is black — is it broken?
First try an SMC reset: Shift+Control+Option+Power held for 10 seconds. This resolves software-related black Touch Bar in many cases. If it remains black after reset, the Touch Bar assembly or controller has failed and hardware repair is required.
Can the Touch Bar be repaired or does it need replacing?
The Touch Bar OLED strip is not repairable at component level — replacement is the standard fix. The Touch Bar flex cable can be replaced independently if the strip itself is working but intermittently disconnecting.
My Touch ID is in the Touch Bar and it stopped working — what happens after Touch Bar replacement?
Touch ID in the Touch Bar is linked to the T1/T2 security chip. On Intel models, Touch Bar replacement does not break Touch ID pairing — the sensor remains paired to the machine. iAssist tests Touch ID functionality after every Touch Bar replacement.
Is the Touch Bar worth repairing?
On a machine you otherwise depend on, yes. The Touch Bar provides app-specific shortcuts, emoji input, and Touch ID. A black or dead Touch Bar is functionally annoying. Assessment + quote approach means you know the cost before committing.
How long does Touch Bar repair take?
Touch Bar replacement is typically same-day or next-day. WhatsApp 078 742 4769 to confirm parts availability for your specific model.
My Touch Bar shows lines or dead zones — is this the cable or the strip?
Visible lines or dead zones on the Touch Bar OLED strip indicate the strip itself has failed — not the cable. Touch Bar assembly replacement resolves this.
Can a Touch Bar failure cause the keyboard to stop working?
No. The Touch Bar and keyboard are separate components on the topcase. A Touch Bar failure does not affect keyboard functionality.
Is Touch Bar repair covered by AppleCare?
If in AppleCare period, Apple covers Touch Bar repair. Out of AppleCare, iAssist performs Touch Bar repair at competitive rates with a 6-month warranty.
Do new MacBook Pros still have a Touch Bar?
No. Apple removed the Touch Bar with the M1 Pro/Max 14/16-inch in 2021 and the M2 Pro/Max in 2023. All current MacBook Pros use physical function keys. The M1/M2 13-inch was the last to have Touch Bar, discontinued in 2023.
