MacBook Pro Charging Port Repair Johannesburg | iAssist
MacBook Pro Charging Port RepairJohannesburg & Gauteng
Your MagSafe cable is doing that thing where it only charges if you hold it at exactly the right angle while standing on one leg. Or the USB-C port has gone completely dead after last night's load shedding spike came back through a no-name charger from China Mall. Charging port faults rarely look mechanical — but the cause is almost always board-level: a worn connector, a fractured solder joint, a blown charging IC, or corrosion from a spill. We do component-level repair on every MagSafe model from 2008 onwards and every USB-C port from 2016 onwards. MagSafe repairs are typically a DC-in board swap. USB-C faults run deeper: the CD3217 charging IC or TPS65982 PD controller on the logic board itself. Eskom surges through cheap third-party chargers cause a disproportionate number of the failures we see in Gauteng. We desolder and replace the port or restore the charging circuit — not a full logic board swap. Free diagnostic, R300 collection, 6-month warranty.

MacBook Pro charging problems we fix
Only one USB-C port charges — other port dead
Each USB-C port has its own controller IC. When one fails — from a voltage spike, heat, or damaged cable — that port stops working. Component-level IC replacement or USB-C board replacement. Common on A1706, A1707, A1989, A2338.
MagSafe 3 port not charging — M-series Pro/Max
Physical damage, bent pins, or lint compaction in the MagSafe 3 port stops charging. USB-C ports continue to charge as a workaround. MagSafe 3 socket replacement is a board-level micro-soldering repair.
CD3217 failure — completely dead machine
The CD3217B12/B13 USB-C power delivery controller IC failure causes complete machine death. No charging light, no response from either port. Component-level IC replacement — high success rate. Common on A1706, A1989, A2338.
Charger light on but battery not charging
The MagSafe light is on (green or amber) but battery percentage doesn't change. Charging circuit fault on the logic board, failed SMC, or dead battery BMS. Diagnostic to determine battery vs board.
USB-C port physically damaged — bent pins or debris
Forced connection, debris, or a dropped machine damages the USB-C socket. USB-C board replacement — not a logic board repair.
MagSafe 1 or MagSafe 2 port failure — Intel models
MagSafe connector corrosion, broken pins, or I/O board failure on older Intel models. MagSafe I/O board and cable replacement.

My MacBook Pro only charges on one side — what is wrong?
Each USB-C port has its own controller IC. A failed controller on one side stops that port charging and transferring data while the other remains fully functional. Component-level IC replacement or USB-C board replacement.
My MacBook Pro is completely dead and won't charge from either port — what is it?
Almost certainly the CD3217B12 or B13 USB-C power delivery controller IC. This is the most common cause of complete power failure on A1706, A1707, A1989, and A2338 models. Component-level repair with high success rate.
Is a dead USB-C port a logic board replacement?
Not necessarily. Most charging port faults are the USB-C daughterboard or a controller IC — both replaceable without touching the main logic board.
Can you fix a physically damaged USB-C port?
Yes — a bent or damaged USB-C socket is replaced on the daughterboard. Free diagnostic to confirm the extent of damage.
Does MacBook Pro have MagSafe?
M1 Pro/Max (2021), M2 Pro/Max (2023), M3 (2023), and M4 (2024) MacBook Pros have MagSafe 3 in addition to USB-C ports. Earlier Intel models have MagSafe 1 or 2. The 13-inch MacBook Pro (all generations) uses USB-C only — no MagSafe.
My MagSafe 3 light is not coming on — is it the port or the cable?
Test with a different known-good MagSafe 3 cable first. If no light with a good cable, the port or the USB-C board is the fault. Free diagnostic to confirm.
How long does charging port repair take?
USB-C board replacement is typically same-day. CD3217 IC replacement 1–2 days. WhatsApp 078 742 4769 to confirm.
How much does MacBook Pro charging port repair cost?
Depends on model and fault. USB-C board from assessment + quote. CD3217 IC repair from assessment + quote. Free diagnostic and written quote before work begins.
Can I charge my MacBook Pro through USB-C while the MagSafe port is being repaired?
Yes. All M-series 14/16-inch MacBook Pros can charge via either USB-C port while the MagSafe port is repaired.
Does charging port repair affect warranty?
Charging port repair does not affect AppleCare coverage on other components. iAssist provides 6-month warranty on all port repairs.
