MacBook Pro SSD UpgradeJohannesburg & Gauteng

You've made a cup of rooibos, opened your laptop, and it's still on the Apple logo by the time you've finished the cup. Your 2013 MacBook Pro isn't broken — it's just choking on a drive smaller than most WhatsApp backup folders. Storage on these models is a proprietary PCIe blade (2013-2015 Retina A1502, A1425, A1398) or a standard 2.5-inch SATA drive (2008-2012 Unibody), and both are fully upgradeable. The difference is dramatic — boot drops from over a minute to under 15 seconds, apps launch instantly, and Gauteng dust that grinds spinning drives to a halt is irrelevant on solid-state storage. We swap the blade, migrate your macOS install with data intact, and you get 500GB to 4TB of modern NVMe-spec storage. Free diagnostic, written quote before any work begins, 6-month warranty. Anywhere in Gauteng, Eliz Courier collects and returns for R300. Apple Silicon M1-M5 storage is soldered into the SoC — no after-purchase upgrade possible.

MacBook Pro storage situations we handle

Non-Retina MacBook Pro — spinning HDD replacement

A1278 and A1286 (2008–2012) models ship with spinning hard drives. Replacing the HDD with a modern SATA SSD transforms performance — boot time drops from 60+ seconds to under 15 seconds. 500GB–2TB SATA SSDs available.

Running out of storage — need more space

The 128GB or 256GB SSD that came with a 2012–2015 Retina model fills up fast with macOS updates, Xcode, and media. Retina 13/15-inch models have proprietary SSD blades that can be upgraded to larger capacities.

macOS upgrade blocked — insufficient storage

macOS Sonoma requires a minimum 20GB free. If the drive is nearly full, the upgrade fails. iAssist upgrades the SSD and installs the latest macOS in one visit. OCLP for 2012–2017 models is handled at the same time.

SSD failing — slow read/write, errors in Disk Utility

An aging SSD showing errors, slow speeds, or frequent beach balls needs replacement before it fails completely. Data migration from the old drive before replacement.

Dual drive — add SSD alongside existing drive

A1278 and A1286 have a CD/DVD drive bay that can be replaced with a second drive caddy — adding an SSD for the OS while keeping the original drive for storage. Optical bay HDD caddy installation.

M-series MacBook Pro SSD — not upgradeable

All M-series MacBook Pros (M1 through M5) have soldered, non-removable SSDs. There is no SSD upgrade path. For more storage, use external drives or a Thunderbolt SSD dock. iAssist can advise on the best external storage solution.

MacBook Pro SSD upgrade — iAssist prices

Only older Intel and non-Retina models have upgradeable storage. All M-series and Intel 2016-onwards have soldered SSDs. Data migration included.

MacBook Pro SSD upgrade — questions we get asked

Which MacBook Pro models can have their SSD upgraded?

Non-Retina models (A1278, A1286, A1297) use standard 2.5-inch SATA drives — fully upgradeable. Retina 2012–2015 (A1502, A1425, A1398) use proprietary SSD blades that can be upgraded. Intel 2016-onwards and all M-series MacBook Pros have soldered SSDs — not upgradeable.

How much difference does an SSD make to an old MacBook Pro?

Replacing a spinning HDD in an A1278 or A1286 with a modern SSD is transformative — boot time drops from over a minute to under 15 seconds, apps launch instantly, and the machine feels like new. One of the best value upgrades available.

Can I add a second drive to my MacBook Pro?

A1278 and A1286 have a DVD drive bay that can be converted to a second drive bay using an optical caddy. Install an SSD for the OS and keep the original HDD for storage — effectively doubling capacity.

Is M-series MacBook Pro SSD upgradeable?

No. All M-series MacBook Pros have fully soldered SSDs integrated into the chip package. There is no upgrade path.

Does SSD upgrade include data migration?

Yes — iAssist migrates all data from the old drive to the new SSD. You get your machine back with everything in place.

Can I run macOS Sonoma on a 2012 MacBook Pro after an SSD upgrade?

Yes via OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP). iAssist installs Sonoma via OCLP on 2013-onwards Retina models. Performance on an SSD-upgraded machine is comfortable for daily use.

How long does SSD upgrade take?

HDD to SSD swaps are typically same-day. Data migration time depends on drive size — a 250GB migration takes about 1 hour. iAssist will give a realistic time estimate.

What size SSD should I get?

For daily use with macOS, 500GB minimum is recommended. If you work with large files or media, 1TB. iAssist advises based on your current usage before ordering.

What happens to my data during the upgrade?

All data is migrated from the old drive to the new SSD before the old drive is removed. iAssist confirms data integrity before returning the machine.

How much does MacBook Pro SSD upgrade cost?

Prices depend on drive capacity and model. Confirmed before booking. Written quote before work begins. WhatsApp 078 742 4769.
