MacBook Pro Logic Board RepairJohannesburg & Gauteng
Your MacBook Pro is dead. The iStore wants R18,000 for a new logic board. Before you list the machine on Facebook Marketplace for parts, hear us out. This is where most repair shops wave a white flag — we pull out the stereo microscope. With a hot-air rework station and board schematics in hand, we trace the failed circuit down to a single capacitor, a blown fuse, a dead IC, or a corroded trace left behind by last week’s coffee incident. No power, no display, GPU artifacts, T2 faults, charging IC failure, backlight issues — most are one-component failures, not write-offs. Load shedding surges through cheap chargers account for more dead boards in Gauteng than we can count. We always repair the board first. Only when damage is beyond component-level recovery do we recommend replacement. The board you send us is usually the board you get back — with one component swapped instead of Apple's full-board price tag.

MacBook Pro logic board problems we fix
Completely dead — no power, no response
Fan spin with immediate shutdown, or no response at all. Common causes: CD3217 USB-C power delivery IC failure (A1706, A1707, A1989, A2338), blown main fuse, SMC fault, or shorted power rail. Component-level diagnosis before recommending repair path.
GPU failure — Intel 15-inch 2011–2013
The AMD Radeon GPU on 2011 and 2013 MacBook Pro 15-inch models (A1286, A1398) is notorious for solder joint failure from thermal stress. Symptoms: distorted graphics, lines on display, random restarts, or no display output at all. GPU reball or logic board replacement. OCLP can disable the dGPU for partial recovery.
Liquid damage — corroded board
Coffee, water, or other liquid reaches the logic board and causes corrosion on the charging circuit, USB-C controllers, audio IC, or power rails. Ultrasonic board clean plus component replacement. Bring it in immediately — every hour increases corrosion spread.
Persistent kernel panics — random crashes
Kernel panics on MacBook Pro point to failing SSD, corrupted macOS, or board-level fault on the memory interface. Run Apple Diagnostics (hold Option+D on startup) to identify hardware errors. Board-level diagnosis if diagnostics flag GPU or memory errors.
USB-C / Thunderbolt controller failure
CD3217 or Thunderbolt controller IC failure stops one or both ports from functioning for data or charging. Component-level IC replacement without full board swap.
No video output — external display not detected
GPU, Thunderbolt controller, or display cable fault. Common on 2016–2019 Intel models. Board-level diagnosis to determine GPU vs controller vs cable.

My MacBook Pro is completely dead — is the logic board repairable?
In most cases yes. A completely dead MacBook Pro is most commonly a failed CD3217 USB-C power delivery IC or a blown fuse — both replaceable at component level. Full board replacement is always the last resort.
Can the 2011 MacBook Pro GPU failure be fixed?
The AMD GPU solder joint failure on 2011 and 2013 15-inch models can be repaired via GPU reball. OCLP can also disable the dGPU and run the machine on integrated graphics only — a free software fix if reball is not economical.
What is the CD3217 chip and why does it fail on MacBook Pro?
The CD3217B12/B13 is the USB-C power delivery controller. It fails from voltage spikes, heat, or faulty cables. When it fails the machine is completely dead. Component-level IC replacement has a high success rate.
Is logic board repair worth it on a 2016–2019 MacBook Pro?
Generally yes if the fault is a single component. These machines have solid SSD performance and display quality — one failed IC is not a reason to retire the machine. iAssist gives an honest cost vs value assessment before any work.
How long does logic board repair take?
Simple IC replacements 1–2 days. Liquid damage with multiple components 3–5 days. iAssist provides a realistic timeline at diagnostic.
My MacBook Pro has liquid damage — should I bring it in immediately?
Yes. Power off immediately, do not charge. Every hour the board sits with corrosion spreading reduces repair success. Bring it in as soon as possible.
Can data be recovered from a dead MacBook Pro logic board?
On Intel models with removable SSD blades yes — the SSD can be extracted and read. On M-series models the SSD is soldered and encrypted — micro-soldering to restore the power path is required before recovery. iAssist handles both.
Does logic board repair carry a warranty?
Yes — 6-month warranty on all component repairs. Same fault within 6 months is repaired at no charge.
What is the success rate of MacBook Pro logic board repair?
Varies by fault. CD3217 replacement: very high success rate. GPU reball: moderate success rate on 2011 models. Liquid damage: depends on severity and how quickly the machine was brought in.
How much does MacBook Pro logic board repair cost?
Depends entirely on the fault. Single IC from R1,500. Liquid damage clean and repair from R1,500–R6,000. Written quote before work begins. Free diagnostic.
