Common MacBook Air M2 A2681 / A2941 (2022–2023) faults we see

Thermal throttling under sustained load — no heatsink

The iFixit M2 MacBook Air teardown confirmed what users report: Apple removed the heatsink entirely, replacing it with a thin metal shielding plate. Under sustained CPU or GPU workloads — video export, extended gaming, large Xcode builds — the M2 throttles performance to manage temperature. For light to moderate daily use this is rarely noticeable, but professionals pushing the chip find it limiting. The only solution is the MacBook Pro which has active cooling.

Base 256GB model — slow SSD speeds

A known hardware limitation: the 256GB M2 MacBook Air uses a single NAND chip, while 512GB and above use two chips in parallel. Real-world sequential write speeds on the 256GB model are significantly lower than Apple's published figures. This affects large file transfers, video editing scratch disk performance, and Time Machine backups. Upgrading the SSD is not possible — the storage is soldered. Buy 512GB or above if storage-intensive tasks are planned.

MagSafe 3 port not charging

The MagSafe 3 port introduced on the M2 is a new failure point. Physical damage, lint compaction, or a bent pin in the port stops charging. In some cases the USB-C ports continue to charge normally — use these as a workaround while the MagSafe port is repaired. MagSafe 3 socket replacement is a board-level micro-soldering repair.

Display backlight failure

The M2 Liquid Retina display backlight circuit can fail from voltage irregularities or physical impact. A dim screen or total backlight loss (image visible with torch) typically requires display assembly replacement — the M2 display is not repairable at panel level.

Touch ID not working after topcase replacement

Same as M1 — Touch ID is paired to the Secure Enclave. Any topcase or keyboard replacement breaks the pairing. Apple Configurator re-pairing is required post-repair. iAssist advises this before any topcase work is carried out.

Liquid damage — soldered SSD makes recovery harder

The M2 has a soldered SSD with hardware encryption tied to the Secure Enclave. Liquid damage that kills the logic board also locks the data. Micro-soldering is required to restore the power path. Data recovery from a dead M2 board is possible but difficult — bring it in immediately without powering on after a spill.

The M2 MacBook Air was the first Air with a display notch (housing the webcam). The display assembly is replaced as a complete unit. What is the difference between the 13-inch (A2681) and 15-inch (A2941) for repairs?

My MacBook Air M2 is not charging through MagSafe but charges through USB-C — what does that mean?
