MacBook Air USB-C & Thunderbolt RepairJohannesburg & Gauteng
The dongle works, the port doesn’t. Or the port works, but only on Tuesdays. A dead or temperamental USB-C/Thunderbolt port on a MacBook Air is almost always a board-level fault — and almost always fixable without swapping the whole logic board.

MacBook Air port problems we fix
One USB-C port dead — other port works fine
Each USB-C port on the MacBook Air has its own controller IC. When one fails — typically from a voltage spike, faulty cable, or heat — that port stops working entirely while the other remains functional. iAssist replaces the failed controller IC at component level under microscope. A2337 M1, A2179, A1932 all share this two-port architecture.
USB device not recognised — external drive, hub, or dongle
A partially failed Thunderbolt or USB-C controller can lose data capability while still passing power for charging. The drive spins up but never mounts, or the hub connects briefly then disconnects. Free diagnostic to confirm whether the fault is the port, the cable, the hub, or the controller IC.
External display not detected — Thunderbolt fault
Thunderbolt 3 display output routes through the Thunderbolt controller IC. A failed controller means the display is never detected — the Mac doesn't even see it as a connected device. Controller IC replacement restores full Thunderbolt 3 functionality.
USB-C port physically damaged — bent or debris inside
Forcing a connector, debris in the port, or a dropped machine can damage the port socket physically. The USB-C daughterboard is replaceable — socket damage is not a logic board replacement situation.
Charging only works on one side
The MacBook Air A1932, A2179, and A2337 can charge from either USB-C port. If charging only works on one side, the USB-C controller or the USB-C board on the dead side has failed. Board-level repair.
CD3217B12 / CD3217B13 controller failure — completely dead machine
The Texas Instruments CD3217 USB-C power delivery controller is responsible for negotiating charging and power delivery on A1932, A2179, and A2337 models. When it fails the machine is completely dead — no charging light, no power at all. Component-level IC replacement under microscope. Very common fault, high success rate.

MacBook Air USB-C and Thunderbolt — questions we get asked
Why does only one USB-C port work on my MacBook Air?
The two USB-C ports share a daughterboard but each has its own controller IC. When one controller fails — from voltage spike, heat, or faulty cable — only that port stops working. iAssist replaces the IC at component level without replacing the whole logic board.
My external drive is not recognised but charging still works — what is wrong?
Charging uses a simpler power path than data. A partially failed USB-C or Thunderbolt controller can lose data capability while still passing power. Free diagnostic to confirm before quoting.
Is a dead USB-C port a logic board replacement?
Not necessarily. In most cases the fault is the USB-C daughterboard or a controller IC — both replaceable at component level. iAssist diagnoses at component level before recommending a board replacement, which is always the last resort.
My MacBook Air is completely dead and won't charge from either port — what is it?
Very likely the CD3217B12 or CD3217B13 Texas Instruments USB-C power delivery controller IC. When it fails the machine is completely dead. This is a component-level repair, not a board replacement. Common fault on A1932, A2179, and A2337 models with a high success rate.
Can you fix a physically broken USB-C port?
Yes — a bent or damaged USB-C socket is replaced on the daughterboard. This is not a logic board repair.
My Thunderbolt display is not detected — is this fixable?
Yes in most cases. Thunderbolt display output routes through the Thunderbolt controller IC. A failed controller is replaced at component level. Free diagnostic to confirm.
How long does USB-C port repair take?
Most repairs are same-day or next-day depending on parts availability. CD3217 IC replacement typically takes 1–2 days. WhatsApp 078 742 4769 to confirm.
Does USB-C repair affect the rest of my MacBook Air?
No. USB-C board and controller IC repair is isolated to the port circuit and does not affect the logic board, SSD, or battery.
How much does MacBook Air USB-C repair cost?
USB-C daughterboard replacement from R900. Controller IC repair from R1,500. CD3217 replacement from R1,500. Free diagnostic and written quote before work begins.
My MacBook Air charges slowly from one port but not the other — is this the same fault?
Slow charging from one port while the other charges normally points to a failing controller IC on the slow port. The port can still negotiate lower wattage power delivery but has lost full Thunderbolt capability. Free diagnostic to confirm.
