MacBook Air Intel Repair2018 · 2019 · 2020 — A1932 & A2179

The 2018–2020 Retina Air looked sharp but hid two bad habits: a butterfly keyboard that despised crumbs and a cooling setup that ran worryingly warm. If yours is throttling, double-typing, or refusing to charge, we know it well — and we fix it.

⚠ Butterfly keyboard (A1932 2018–2019): The butterfly keyboard is a known Apple manufacturing defect causing key failure from microscopic debris. Topcase replacement is the correct fix. The 2020 A2179 uses the reliable Magic Keyboard and does not have this issue.

Common MacBook Air A1932 / A2179 (2018–2020) faults we see

CD3217B12 / CD3217B13 USB-C controller failure — completely dead machine

One of the most common logic board faults on the 2018–2020 Intel and M1 MacBook Airs. The CD3217 is a Texas Instruments USB-C power delivery controller IC — when it fails the machine is completely dead: no charging light, no fan spin, no response to any input. It's frequently misdiagnosed as a dead battery or dead charger. iAssist identifies and replaces failed CD3217 chips at component level under microscope. This is a micro-soldering repair, not a board replacement — significantly cheaper than a new logic board and it's a recognised fix with a high success rate on these models.

Severe thermal throttling — no proper heatsink

The A1932 and A2179 are notorious for Apple's thermal design: the CPU fan is not aimed directly at the processor heatsink. Under any sustained load — video calls, multiple browser tabs, PDF rendering — the i5 core temperatures climb to 90–100°C and macOS throttles the CPU below its base clock to prevent damage. This is a design limitation, not a fixable fault. Thermal paste replacement and copper shim installation can reduce temperatures by 20–30°C and delay throttling significantly. iAssist performs this service as part of fan/thermal servicing.

CPU failure from sustained heat

Years of thermal stress degrades the Intel Core i5 die. The A1932 and A2179 logic boards fail more frequently than any other modern MacBook Air. Symptoms: random kernel panics, failure to boot, black screen after POST, or the machine runs but throttles immediately to minimal performance. Logic board replacement is the only fix — component-level CPU reballing is not practical on these models.

A1932 butterfly keyboard failure

The A1932 uses Apple's butterfly keyboard mechanism — the same defective design from the 2016–2019 MacBook Pro range. Keys ghost, repeat, or stop responding entirely. Apple's free repair programme has ended. iAssist offers keyboard-only or full topcase replacement. The A2179 (2020) switched to the scissor mechanism and does not have this issue.

USB-C port failure — only two ports, one side often dies

The A1932 has only two Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports. The charging port IC (USB-C board) fails due to heat, liquid, or damaged cables being forced in. With one port dead, charging options are severely limited. USB-C board replacement is a component-level repair iAssist handles regularly.

Fan running at full speed constantly

A failed temperature sensor — most commonly the battery thermistor — causes the SMC to run the fan at maximum as a safety response. Often triggered by liquid damage or a degraded battery. Diagnostics show PFM006 or PPT006 error codes via Apple Diagnostics. Battery replacement resolves the majority of cases.

Display backlight dim or dead on one side

The A1932 retina display backlight circuit is sensitive to voltage spikes. A blown backlight fuse or failed driver IC produces a dim screen, bright spots on one edge, or total backlight failure. Micro-soldering board repair in most cases. Display assembly replacement if the panel itself is damaged.

MacBook Air Intel Repair — FAQ

The butterfly keyboard on my 2018 or 2019 MacBook Air keeps failing — is this fixable?

Yes — topcase replacement is the correct fix for butterfly keyboard failure on the A1932. This is a known Apple manufacturing defect. The 2020 MacBook Air (A2179) returned to the reliable Magic Keyboard and does not have this issue. Contact us for current topcase pricing.

Can I upgrade the SSD on my 2018, 2019, or 2020 Intel MacBook Air?

No — all three models (A1932 and A2179) have SSDs soldered to the logic board. No upgrade is possible. External Thunderbolt storage is the only option for expanding capacity.

My 2018 MacBook Air has a T2 chip — what does that mean for repairs?

The T2 chip encrypts all storage and ties the encryption keys to that specific logic board. If the board fails, data cannot be recovered by connecting the drive to another machine — the original board must be restored. iAssist always attempts board restoration before declaring data unrecoverable.

The 2018/2019 MacBook Air Touch ID fingerprint scanner stopped working — is that the board?

Touch ID on the MacBook Air is paired to the Secure Enclave on the logic board. If Touch ID stops working, the topcase (containing the Touch ID sensor) may need replacement, or there is a pairing fault that can sometimes be resolved in software. Free diagnostic to confirm.

My 2020 MacBook Air (A2179) keyboard is sticky — is that the butterfly keyboard?

No — the 2020 MacBook Air A2179 uses the Magic Keyboard (scissor mechanism), not the butterfly. Sticky keys on the A2179 are caused by debris or liquid rather than the structural defect affecting the 2018–2019 models. Individual key cleaning or replacement may be possible.

My 2018 MacBook Air only has USB-C ports — my MagSafe charger won't fit. Is that normal?

Yes — the 2018 MacBook Air was the first Air to drop MagSafe in favour of USB-C only. It charges via any USB-C charger including USB-C MacBook chargers. MagSafe 3 only returned with the M2 MacBook Air in 2022.

Can the 2018–2020 Intel MacBook Air run the latest macOS?

The 2020 A2179 runs Sonoma natively. The 2018 and 2019 A1932 also run Sonoma natively. All three models may be dropped from future macOS versions but are currently well-supported.

How much does battery replacement cost on the 2018–2020 Intel MacBook Air?

Battery part (A1965): R2,185.71. iAssist total including labour: R2,800–R3,000. Written quote before work begins.

Do you offer collection for 2018–2020 MacBook Air repair?

Yes — R300 insured door-to-door collection across Gauteng. WhatsApp 078 742 4769.

My 2019 MacBook Air screen has a yellow tint — is that a display fault?

A yellow or warm tint on the A1932 True Tone display is often the True Tone feature adjusting to ambient light — check System Settings → Displays and toggle True Tone off to see if the tint resolves. If it persists with True Tone off, it is a display fault. Free diagnostic to confirm.
