MacBook Air Logic Board RepairJohannesburg & Gauteng

You press power and… nothing. No chime, no glow, no beachball — just a very expensive slab of aluminium playing dead. Most MacBook Air no-power faults trace back to a single failed component, and finding that needle is exactly what we do.

MacBook Air logic board problems we fix

Completely dead — no power, no charging light

The most common logic board fault on A1932, A2179, and A2337 models. Usually a failed CD3217B12/B13 USB-C power delivery controller IC. Single component replacement at board level — not a full board swap. Also check: blown main fuse, SMC failure, or shorted power rail.

Won't turn on but fan spins briefly

Fan spin with no display indicates power is reaching the fan but the SMC cannot complete POST. Causes: shorted power rail, failed SMC, or a component pulling a voltage rail low. Board-level diagnosis to identify the specific fault.

Liquid damage — corroded board

Liquid damage affects specific components rather than the whole board. Corrosion on the charging circuit (ISL6259/CD3217), trackpad connector traces, and backlight circuit are the most common failure points on A1466. Ultrasonic clean plus component replacement.

Boots but crashes or kernel panics

Persistent kernel panics point to a failing SSD, corrupted macOS, or a board-level fault on the memory interface or GPU. iAssist runs Apple Diagnostics and board-level testing before recommending a repair path.

No display — backlight failure

Backlight failure with a faint image visible under torchlight indicates a blown backlight fuse (F7700 or similar) or failed backlight IC (U7701). Component-level repair on the logic board restores full backlight function.

Audio IC failure — both speakers dead

When both speakers fail simultaneously the fault is almost always the audio amplifier IC on the logic board. Component replacement restores full audio without replacing the speakers or the logic board.

MacBook Air logic board repair — questions we get asked

My MacBook Air is completely dead — won't turn on at all

The most common causes are a failed CD3217 USB-C power delivery controller IC, a blown main fuse, a failed SMC, or a short circuit on the PP3V42 or PPBUS power rails. iAssist diagnoses at component level before recommending a repair path. In many cases the fix is a single IC replacement, not a full board swap.

What is component-level logic board repair?

Component-level repair means identifying and replacing the specific failed chip, capacitor, resistor, or trace on the logic board — rather than replacing the entire board. iAssist uses microscope-assisted micro-soldering to replace individual components. This is typically 30–70% cheaper than a board replacement and is the preferred approach on all MacBook Air models.

My MacBook Air has liquid damage — is the logic board repairable?

Yes in most cases. Liquid damage causes corrosion on specific components rather than destroying the whole board. iAssist performs ultrasonic board cleaning followed by component-level diagnosis and replacement of damaged ICs, capacitors, and resistors. Bring it in immediately — every hour the machine sits powered off reduces further corrosion damage.

What is the CD3217 chip and why does it fail?

The CD3217B12 and CD3217B13 are Texas Instruments USB-C power delivery controller ICs used on A1932, A2179, and A2337 MacBook Airs. When they fail — from voltage spikes, heat, or faulty cables — the machine is completely dead with no charging light. Component-level IC replacement under microscope resolves this. High success rate.

Can data be recovered from a dead logic board?

On Intel MacBook Airs the SSD is a removable blade — it can be extracted and read via a USB adapter even if the logic board is completely dead. On M-series models the SSD is soldered and encrypted, requiring micro-soldering to restore the power path before recovery. iAssist handles both scenarios.

How much does MacBook Air logic board repair cost?

Single IC replacements from R1,500. Liquid damage board clean and component repair from R1,500 to R5,500 depending on severity. Full board replacement is always the last resort and quoted separately. Written quote before any work begins.

Is logic board repair worth it on an older MacBook Air?

Generally yes on A1466 (2013–2017) and A1932/A2179 (2018–2020) models if the fault is a single component. The board itself is sound — one failed IC is not a reason to write off the machine. iAssist gives an honest recommendation based on the repair cost vs machine value before any work is authorised.

How long does logic board repair take?

Simple IC replacements are typically 1–2 days. Complex liquid damage repairs involving multiple components take 2–5 days. iAssist provides a realistic timeline at the diagnostic stage.

What if the logic board cannot be repaired?

If component-level repair is not feasible, iAssist will advise on board replacement options or help with data recovery before the machine is retired. We do not charge for diagnostic work if the machine is beyond economic repair.

Does logic board repair carry a warranty?

Yes — iAssist provides a 6-month warranty on all logic board component repairs. If the same component fails within the warranty period, it is repaired at no charge.
