Common MacBook Air A1466 (2013–2017) faults we see

Liquid damage — corrosion on logic board

The A1466 sits very low to the desk and the vented bottom case pulls in air from directly underneath. Small spills — even a few drops of coffee or tea — get drawn straight into the logic board. Corrosion is often delayed: the machine works fine for days or weeks then dies suddenly as oxidation spreads across power rails and SMC circuits. The MagSafe I/O board cable area, charging circuit (ISL6259), and trackpad connector traces are the most common failure points. Micro-soldering repair or component-level board work is required — not just a clean.

MagSafe port not charging

The MagSafe 2 I/O board and its ribbon cable are a weak point. Corrosion from minor liquid ingress, cable fraying at the hinge, or physical damage to the port pins causes the charger light to stay green permanently or not light at all. Often misdiagnosed as a dead battery. I/O board and cable replacement resolves most cases.

Won't turn on — fan spins briefly then stops

Classic symptom of a failed or short-circuited power rail, often from previous liquid damage or a blown fuse on the board. The fan spin-and-stop with no display indicates power is reaching the fan but the SMC can't complete POST. Requires board-level diagnostics to identify the failed component.

USB-A ports intermittent or dead

USB ports share a rail with the I/O board. Port failure is often caused by corrosion on the I/O board connector, a blown USB power fuse on the logic board, or physical damage from a forced connection. Component-level repair or I/O board replacement.

Display backlight fails — dark screen with faint image

Shine a torch at the screen at an angle — if you can see a faint desktop, the backlight has failed. Common causes: blown backlight fuse (F7700 or similar), failed backlight IC (U7701), or corroded LVDS cable connector from liquid entry. Logic board micro-soldering repair in most cases.

Keyboard and trackpad stop working after spill

The keyboard and trackpad share a ribbon cable that routes across a vulnerable path inside the A1466. Even small spills cause SMC resets on every power button press (a sign the keyboard matrix is shorted). Topcase replacement plus board inspection required — the board may be developing further corrosion.

MacBook Air Intel Repair — FAQ

Is the MacBook Air 2013–2017 still worth repairing?

Yes — particularly the 2015 and 2017 models. These are excellent, lightweight machines with good build quality, fast SSDs, and all-day battery life. SSD upgrade, battery replacement, and screen repair all make financial sense compared to replacement costs. Even the 2013 model with a battery replacement becomes a very usable everyday machine.

Can the SSD be upgraded on a 2013–2017 MacBook Air?

Yes — these models have a proprietary PCIe SSD blade that can be replaced. iAssist charges R3,800 (we supply 500GB drive + data migration) or R1,800 (client supplies compatible blade). This is one of the best upgrades available for these models.

How much does battery replacement cost on the 2013–2017 MacBook Air?

Battery part (A1496): R1,422.81. iAssist total including labour: R2,000–R2,200. Written quote before work begins.

What is the difference between the 13-inch A1466 and 11-inch A1465?

The 13-inch A1466 has a larger display, better battery life (around 12 hours vs 9 hours), and a slightly larger SSD blade. Both use the same battery part number and keyboard family. Most repairs and upgrades apply equally to both models.

Can my 2013–2017 MacBook Air run a current version of macOS?

The 2017 (A1466 mid 2017) runs Sonoma natively. The 2013–2015 models are no longer officially supported by Apple — but iAssist can install Sonoma via OpenCore Legacy Patcher for R1,500, restoring current browser support, app compatibility, and security patches.

My 2017 MacBook Air screen is the old non-Retina display — can it be replaced?

Yes — the 2013–2017 MacBook Air uses a 1440×900 display (13-inch) or 1366×768 (11-inch). LCD panel: R1,800 part. Full display assembly: R3,500 (new) or R1,000 (refurb). Labour added on top. The non-Retina display is actually more affordable to repair than later Retina models.

The MagSafe 2 connector on my MacBook Air gets hot when charging — is that dangerous?

A MagSafe connector that gets unusually hot indicates a charging circuit issue or a damaged connector. Stop using that cable immediately and try a different MagSafe 2 charger. If the problem persists with a different cable, bring it in for a free diagnostic of the charging port.

My 2015 or 2017 MacBook Air fan runs constantly — is that a hardware fault?

Constant fan on a MacBook Air that is not under load usually indicates dried thermal paste causing the CPU to run hotter than it should. A thermal paste replacement and internal dust clean brings temperatures down significantly. iAssist charges for the thermal service — contact us for current pricing.

Do you offer collection for 2013–2017 MacBook Air repair?

Yes — R300 insured door-to-door collection and return across Gauteng. WhatsApp 078 742 4769.

Can you install macOS Sonoma on my 2013 or 2014 MacBook Air via OpenCore?

Yes — the 2013 and 2014 MacBook Air models support macOS Sonoma via OpenCore Legacy Patcher. iAssist performs a clean installation for R1,500. An SSD with sufficient free space is required. Both the OCLP install and any SSD upgrade can be done in a single visit.
