MacBook Air keyboard faults we fix
Keys not registering or sticking
Dust or debris under keycaps is the most common cause. A1466 (pre-2018): individual key repair often possible. A1932 butterfly keyboard (2018): a single stuck key typically means keyboard or topcase replacement is required.
Keys typing double or wrong characters
Classic symptom of the A1932 butterfly keyboard failure — a known Apple defect affecting 2018-2019 models. Apple's free repair programme has ended. iAssist offers keyboard-only replacement or full topcase swap.
Liquid spilled on keyboard
Keys may stop working individually or the entire keyboard may fail. Ultrasonic cleaning can revive the board. In severe cases, topcase replacement is required. Bring in immediately — dried liquid causes permanent corrosion.
Keyboard backlight not working
Backlight failure on Intel models is often a connector or logic board issue rather than the keyboard itself. Free diagnostic to identify the cause before quoting.
Spacebar or Enter key loose or broken
Keycap clip or scissor mechanism damaged. Replacement keycaps available for A1466. A1932 and M-series individual keycaps are not available separately — topcase replacement required.
Touch ID not working (M-series)
Touch ID is paired to the logic board on M-series MacBook Airs. Topcase replacement breaks the pairing — re-pairing requires Apple authorisation. iAssist handles the topcase swap and advises on the re-pairing process.

MacBook Air Keyboard Repair — questions we get asked
My MacBook Air 2018 or 2019 keyboard has sticky or repeating keys — is that the butterfly keyboard fault?
Yes — the butterfly keyboard on the 2018 and 2019 MacBook Air (A1932) is notorious for key failure caused by even microscopic debris under the key mechanism. This is a known Apple defect. The repair requires topcase replacement since the keyboard is integrated into the palm rest. The 2020 MacBook Air (A2179) and all M-series models returned to the reliable Magic Keyboard mechanism.
Can individual keys be replaced on a MacBook Air?
On 2013–2017 models (A1466) individual keycaps and butterfly mechanisms can sometimes be replaced individually. On 2018 and later models, the keyboard is fully integrated into the topcase — individual key replacement is not possible and the full topcase must be replaced.
How much does MacBook Air keyboard repair cost?
2013–2017 models (A1466): keyboard-only replacement from R1,500–R1,800 (part R822 US / R954 UK + labour). Full topcase replacement R5,500+ (part R4,500 + labour). For 2018+ models, topcase prices — prices confirmed before booking year.
My MacBook Air keyboard is completely unresponsive after liquid exposure — is it fixable?
Liquid on the keyboard typically damages the keyboard flex cable or the keyboard membrane. After liquid exposure, ultrasonic cleaning of the logic board is the priority — the keyboard may recover after cleaning and drying. If the keyboard remains unresponsive after cleaning, topcase replacement is required.
Does keyboard replacement affect the battery?
On M-series MacBook Air models the battery is attached to the topcase. A topcase replacement on M-series machines includes a new battery — this is factored into the pricing. The old battery is responsibly disposed of.
How long does MacBook Air keyboard repair take?
2013–2017 keyboard-only: 2–4 hours. Topcase replacement (any model): 1–2 business days. We give you a clear timeline on drop-off.
My MacBook Air keyboard backlight stopped working — is that a separate fault?
Yes — keyboard backlight failure is a separate circuit from the keys themselves. On Intel models this is often a keyboard backlight controller IC fault on the logic board. On M-series this is typically a topcase cable issue. Free diagnostic to confirm before quoting.
Do you offer collection for MacBook Air keyboard repair?
Yes — R300 insured door-to-door collection across Gauteng. WhatsApp 078 742 4769.
Can I type with an external keyboard while waiting for repair?
Yes — a USB or Bluetooth keyboard will work normally while your MacBook Air keyboard is being repaired. If you need your machine urgently, ask about our loan keyboard options.
My MacBook Air shows keyboard not detected at all — what causes that?
Keyboard not detected is a topcase cable fault, a liquid-damaged keyboard flex, or — on very rare occasions — an SMC fault. Try an SMC reset first (Intel: hold Shift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds). If keyboard remains undetected, bring it in for a free diagnostic.
