MacBook Air data situations we recover from

MacBook won't boot — data still needed

Logic board fault, failed SSD, or corrupted macOS. Intel models (A1466, A1932, A2179): SSD is removable — very high recovery rate. M-series: SSD is soldered but data is encrypted and often recoverable via Apple ID. Micro-soldering can restore power for direct recovery.

Liquid damage — MacBook dead

Corrosion can kill the machine but leave the SSD intact. Intel models: SSD removed and read via USB adapter. M-series: logic board micro-soldering to restore the power path before recovery attempt.

Accidentally deleted files

Recently deleted files stay in Trash. Permanently deleted files may be recoverable if sectors haven't been overwritten — stop using the machine immediately and bring it in. Every write operation reduces recovery chances.

Formatted or wiped drive

A quick format often leaves data recoverable. A full secure erase (Apple Silicon AES key wipe) is not recoverable. Bring in as soon as possible.

Screen dead but MacBook still runs

If the machine powers on, we can connect an external display, log in, and copy your data immediately — no disassembly required in most cases.

Wrong Time Machine version restored

We can mount a Time Machine backup and extract specific files or folder versions without a full system restore.

MacBook Air Data Recovery — questions we get asked

Can you recover data from a MacBook Air that won't turn on?

In most cases yes. If the storage is undamaged the data is physically still there. On 2013–2017 models the SSD blade can be connected to external equipment directly. On T2-encrypted models (2018–2020) and M-series the logic board must be restored to a working state first. We always attempt data recovery before any repair work begins.

My MacBook Air crashed and now shows a flashing folder icon — is my data lost?

The flashing folder icon means macOS cannot find a bootable system — it does not mean your data is gone. The data is almost certainly still on the SSD. This is often a corrupted macOS installation rather than a storage failure. We diagnose the exact cause and advise on recovery before any work begins.

MacBook Air 2018 or later has T2 chip — can you still recover my data?

T2 chip recovery requires the original logic board to be restored to working order. The encryption keys are tied to the specific T2 chip — the SSD cannot be read on any other machine. iAssist performs board restoration first, then clones the data. We always advise you clearly on the likelihood of success before committing to recovery work.

My MacBook Air M1/M2/M3 logic board is dead — can data be recovered?

M-series data recovery requires logic board restoration — storage is integrated into the Apple Silicon package and cannot be read independently. We restore the board to a bootable state and clone your data. Once data is secured we proceed with any repair work you need.

How much does MacBook Air data recovery cost?

Data recovery ranges from R900 (software-level corruption on an intact 2013–2017 drive) to R2,800 (board restoration required on T2 or M-series). Exact cost confirmed after the free diagnostic.

I accidentally deleted important files from my MacBook Air — can they be recovered?

Deleted file recovery depends on how much data has been written to the SSD since deletion. On a MacBook Air with APFS, recently deleted files may be recoverable via filesystem tools. If you've deleted files, stop writing to the drive immediately to maximise recovery chances.

Will you attempt data recovery before starting any repair?

Yes — always. We never start a repair that could compromise data without first securing it or getting your explicit confirmation that data is not required.

My MacBook Air is under AppleCare — can I still use your data recovery service?

Yes — data recovery is independent of any Apple warranty or AppleCare status. We recover your data before any hardware repair that might affect warranty. Once data is secure you can choose whether to proceed with Apple or with iAssist for the repair itself.

Do you offer collection for MacBook Air data recovery?

Yes — R300 insured door-to-door collection across Gauteng. WhatsApp 078 742 4769.

How do I prevent data loss on my MacBook Air in future?

Time Machine backup to an external drive is the most reliable protection. Set it up in System Settings → General → Time Machine. iCloud Drive provides additional cloud backup for key files. A machine that is regularly backed up makes data recovery a non-emergency.
