MacBook Air Repair Johannesburg & Nationwide | iAssist
MacBook Air Repair โ Intel & Apple Silicon
Every MacBook Air has its moment โ the spilled coffee, the swollen battery lifting the trackpad, the day MagSafe stops magnetising. We've been fixing those moments for over a decade. Cracked screens, swollen batteries, MagSafe and USB-C charging faults, butterfly and Magic Keyboard failures, liquid damage and component-level logic board faults โ every model from the 2010 Intel A1370 through to the latest 2026 M5, repaired via professional microsoldering rather than a full-board swap. Older Intel Airs also supported for SSD upgrades and OCLP macOS Sonoma installs. Every repair backed by a 6-month warranty.

Most shops can swap a part. Far fewer have the microscope, the hot-air rework station, the schematics โ or the years of practice it takes to actually repair a logic board. Here's what that means in practice.
Diagnosis under a microscope
Most shops eyeball the board. We examine every MacBook Air under a stereo microscope, tracing power rails and identifying the specific failed component โ a single capacitor, a chip, a corroded trace โ rather than blaming the whole board.
The failed part named in your quote
Your written quote tells you exactly which component has failed. "Board fault" isn't a diagnosis โ "CD3217B12 USB-C controller, port 2" is. You agree to fix a real fault, not a vague verdict.
We repair the part, not the board
Microsoldering replaces the failed chip or trace and leaves the rest of the board โ your SSD, your data, your installed apps โ exactly where they were. Full board swaps wipe everything. We don't, where it can be avoided.
Honest verdicts, including "walk away"
When a repair doesn't make sense โ a 2011 board with multiple faults, a screen swap on a machine worth less than the part โ we say so before any work begins. No padding the bill. No selling you a fix you don't need.
MacBook Air battery lifespan guide
Apple's MacBook Air batteries are designed to retain 80% of original capacity through 1000 complete charge cycles. In real-world South African conditions โ load-shedding, daily heavy use, ambient heat โ replacement is often warranted earlier than that ceiling suggests. macOS will throttle processor performance once battery health drops below 80%, so a fresh battery often restores noticeable speed as well as runtime.
M1 ยท M2 ยท M3 ยท M4 ยท M5
Typical lifespan: 6โ9 years. Apple Silicon batteries are the most durable Apple has shipped on the MacBook Air. At 500 cycles, monitor capacity. By 800 cycles or below 80% health, replacement restores both runtime and full processor speed.
Retina A1932 / A2179
Typical lifespan: 4โ6 years. Battery part A1965. Intel Air batteries degrade faster than Apple Silicon under processor load. Below 80% capacity, expect noticeable performance loss especially during video calls and multitasking.
A1466 13-inch
Typical lifespan: 5โ7 years. Battery part A1496. Battery-related shutdowns and unreliable runtime are common above 350 cycles. A fresh battery often transforms a 2013-2017 Air back into a dependable daily machine.
11-inch A1370 / A1465
Vintage territory. Battery parts A1406 (2010-2011) and A1495 (2012-2015). Original batteries are well past their service life. Replace any visibly swollen battery immediately โ swollen cells can lift and damage the trackpad and topcase.

Known MacBook Air issues
Every MacBook Air generation eventually develops a personality โ usually expressed through a specific design fault that turns up like clockwork after a few years of use. Below are the ones we see most often on the workshop bench. None is terminal. Each has a well-defined repair path and we've handled all of them many times over.
CD3217B12 USB-C controller failure
The M1 MacBook Air logic board uses two CD3217B12 USB-C power-delivery controller chips โ one per port. These chips are a well-documented failure point: a power surge, a faulty third-party charger, or sometimes spontaneous component death can take one or both out. When they fail, the MacBook stops charging and refuses to power on. On a USB-C meter the board typically reads 5V with zero current draw.
Apple's standard repair path is a full logic board replacement. On an M-series machine that means swapping out the entire computer โ chip, RAM, and SSD storage included โ which is extremely expensive and wipes your data with it.
Butterfly keyboard failure
The 2018 and 2019 Intel MacBook Air used Apple's controversial butterfly mechanism keyboard. The shallow-travel design is prone to key bounce, sticky keys, double-letter input and complete switch failure from even tiny amounts of debris finding their way under the keycaps.
Apple's keyboard service programme has now ended, so out-of-warranty butterfly failures need third-party repair. The 2020 A2179 returned to the reliable Magic Keyboard and is not affected.
Thermal design causing CPU degradation & death
Apple's thermal design on the 2018-2020 Intel MacBook Air is genuinely flawed โ the cooling fan inside the chassis is not physically connected to the CPU heatsink. The fan circulates air around the inside of the case but doesn't directly cool the processor. Under sustained load โ video calls, browser-heavy workflows, even macOS updates โ CPU temperatures climb high enough to trigger aggressive thermal throttling, and over time, permanent CPU degradation.
Many of these machines arrive with a dead or partially-dead CPU after years of compounding heat stress. Symptoms include sudden shutdowns under load, refusal to boot, GPU artefacts, or complete no-power faults.
Anti-reflective coating delamination
On all Retina-display MacBook Airs (2018 onwards), the anti-reflective coating applied to the display surface can react with skin oils, alcohol-based wipes, or trapped moisture and produce visible blotches, streaks or cloudy patches. The damage is permanent and cannot be cleaned off โ sometimes called "Staingate" in user forums.
Apple's coating repair programme covered earlier MacBook Pro models but not the MacBook Air. Out-of-warranty owners need third-party display work.
Trackpad-gap liquid ingress
The 2013-2017 A1466 has a design quirk that makes even tiny spills disproportionately dangerous: the narrow gap at the top edge of the trackpad sits directly above the trackpad cable connector and a section of the logic board. The keyboard's plastic backlight sheet provides only limited protection โ it's not water-tight.
The result: just a few drops of water, a small coffee splash, or a knocked-over wine glass can seep through that gap and reach the board. Owners regularly report "barely anything spilled" and we open the machine to find significant corrosion on the trackpad cable connector and logic board.
T2 / Apple Silicon data binding
The 2018-2020 Intel MacBook Air introduced Apple's T2 Security Chip, and every M-series Air (M1 onwards) continued the model โ all SSD storage is encrypted with keys tied to that specific logic board. If the board fails, the storage cannot be moved to another machine for data recovery.
Many repair shops declare these machines unrecoverable. They aren't โ the original board has to be restored to a bootable state first, then the data cloned, then the repair completed.

MacBook Air repair โ frequently asked questions
How much does MacBook Air repair cost in South Africa?
It depends on the model and the fault. As a guide: screen replacements run roughly R2,500โR6,500, batteries R1,500โR3,500, charging-port and board repairs from around R900, and full logic-board microsoldering R2,500โR12,000. Every repair starts with a free diagnostic and a written, fixed-price quote โ you only pay once you approve it.
Which MacBook Air models do you repair?
All of them โ from the latest M5 (2026) and M4, through M3, M2 and M1 Apple Silicon Airs, back to the Intel Retina (2018โ2020), the 13-inch A1466 (2013โ2017), and the original 11-inch. If your model isn't listed, WhatsApp us; we haven't turned a MacBook Air away yet.
Is the diagnostic really free?
Yes โ completely free, with no obligation. We assess your MacBook Air, identify the exact fault, and give you a written fixed-price quote. There are no call-out or assessment fees, and you only pay if you decide to go ahead.
How long does a MacBook Air repair take?
Screen and battery replacements are often same-day. Most repairs are done within 1โ3 business days, and complex logic-board microsoldering within 3โ5. We give you a realistic timeframe with your quote.
Can you fix MacBook Air liquid damage?
Yes, with a high success rate โ but speed matters. Switch the machine off, don't try to charge it, and bring it in as soon as possible. We use ultrasonic cleaning and component-level board repair to recover liquid-damaged Airs, and your data stays untouched throughout.
My MacBook Air battery is swollen and lifting the trackpad โ is that a problem?
Stop using it. A swollen battery is a safety risk and can crack the trackpad or case. Power it down, avoid charging, and bring it in. We remove the old cell safely, fit an OEM-grade replacement, and reseal the chassis properly.
Do you repair Apple Silicon (M1โM5) logic boards?
Yes โ this is where iAssist stands apart. Apple Silicon board faults need chip-level microsoldering that most shops don't offer and simply turn away. We diagnose and repair at component level, which is far cheaper than an Apple board swap and keeps your data intact.
I'm not in Gauteng โ can you still help?
Absolutely. Within Gauteng we offer insured door-to-door collection and return for R300 via Eliz Courier. Anywhere else in South Africa โ Cape Town, Durban, PE, Bloemfontein, Polokwane โ we arrange The Courier Guy to collect from your door, repair, and return. No travel needed.
Is my data safe during the repair?
Completely. Component-level repair leaves your storage, files, and macOS untouched, and we treat everything on your device as confidential. If a repair ever needs a software reinstall, we tell you first and attempt data recovery before anything else.
What warranty do you offer?
Every MacBook Air repair comes with a 6-month warranty on parts and labour. If the same fault returns within that period, we fix it at no charge โ and you always get a written fixed-price quote before any work begins.
