Can the RAM be upgraded on the 2017 or 2019 21.5-inch iMac?
Yes — both the 2017 and 2019 21.5-inch iMac models have SO-DIMM slots that can be upgraded to 32GB. Unlike the 27-inch, the display must be removed to access the slots. iAssist charges R1,600 per 8GB DDR4 plus R800 for the display removal labour and reseal.
Can my 2017 21.5-inch iMac run macOS Sonoma?
Yes via OpenCore Legacy Patcher. Apple dropped the 2017 iMac from Ventura natively. OCLP allows a clean Sonoma installation. iAssist performs the full upgrade for R1,500 flat — SSD and 8GB RAM required.
My 2017 21.5-inch iMac has a slow spinning hard drive — what are my options?
Replacing the hard drive with an SSD is the single best upgrade you can make. iAssist charges R3,800 for a 500GB SSD (we supply) including display removal, internal dust clean, and reseal with OEM adhesive strips. Alternatively if you supply a compatible drive, fitting is R1,800.
Which 2017 21.5-inch iMac models have upgradeable RAM?
All of them. Unlike previous years, both the base 2.3GHz model (iMac18,1) and the 4K models (iMac18,2) have SO-DIMM slots rather than soldered RAM. Display removal is required for all 21.5-inch RAM upgrades.

My 2017 21.5-inch iMac is very slow — could more RAM fix it?
Possibly, but check Activity Monitor first. Open it, click the Memory tab, and look at Memory Pressure and Swap Used. If Memory Pressure is yellow or red, or Swap Used is above zero, more RAM will make a clear difference. If both look fine, the bottleneck is more likely a slow hard drive or Fusion Drive — in which case an SSD upgrade will have a bigger impact than RAM. We diagnose both during the free assessment.
Is the 2019 21.5-inch iMac worth repairing or should I replace it?
For most faults, yes — the 2019 21.5-inch is a capable machine with a Retina 4K display and runs macOS Sonoma natively. Screen replacements, logic board repairs, and SSD upgrades are all achievable at a fraction of replacement cost. The exception is if the logic board has failed catastrophically — in that case we give you an honest cost-benefit assessment before you commit to anything.
My 2017 iMac fan is loud constantly — is that a software or hardware problem?
Both are possible. First try an SMC reset: shut down, unplug for 15 seconds, plug back in, wait 5 seconds, power on. If the fan settles, it was an SMC state issue — common after power interruptions. If the fan stays at maximum after the reset, it is a hardware fault — either dried thermal paste causing genuine overheating, or a failed temperature sensor IC. Both are diagnosable and repairable. Bring it in for a free check.
