Is your iMac telling you it needs an SSD?
Boot takes 3–5 minutes
Startup time over 2 minutes is almost always a dying or overloaded hard drive. An SSD brings this to under 20 seconds.
Constant spinning beachball
The beachball appears when macOS is waiting for the drive to respond. An SSD eliminates this almost entirely.
Apps take 30+ seconds to open
Slow app launch is storage-bound, not processor-bound. An SSD fixes this immediately.
Clicking or grinding noise
Clicking is a warning sign of imminent hard drive failure. Back up immediately and replace before data is lost.
macOS updates take hours
Software updates write enormous amounts of data — a slow drive makes this agonising. An SSD makes updates fast.
Almost full storage warning
Upgrading to a larger SSD solves the space problem and the speed problem simultaneously.
SATA III vs PCIe NVMe — which SSD does your iMac use?
Not all iMac SSD upgrades are the same. Older models use a 2.5-inch SATA III drive — the same format as most laptops. Later models use a proprietary PCIe NVMe blade. Getting this wrong means an incompatible part. We confirm your exact drive type before ordering.
| Model | Drive type | Interface | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| iMac 21.5-inch (2013–2014) | 2.5-inch HDD or SSHD | SATA III 6Gb/s | Upgraded to standard 2.5-inch SSD |
| iMac 27-inch (2013–2014) | 3.5-inch HDD or SSHD | SATA III 6Gb/s | Upgraded to 2.5-inch SSD via bracket |
| iMac (Late 2013) — BTO SSD option | Proprietary PCIe blade | PCIe 2.0 ×2 | Blade slot alongside SATA — dual storage possible |
| iMac 21.5-inch / 27-inch (2015) | SATA HDD or PCIe blade | SATA III / PCIe 2.0 ×4 | Fusion Drive = SATA HDD + PCIe blade |
| iMac 21.5-inch / 27-inch (2017) | SATA HDD or PCIe NVMe blade | SATA III / PCIe 3.0 ×4 | NVMe blade significantly faster |
| iMac 27-inch (2019) | PCIe NVMe blade | PCIe 3.0 ×4 | Fast NVMe — 27-inch blade accessible without display removal |
| iMac 27-inch (2020) | Soldered to logic board | — | Not upgradeable — soldered |
| iMac 24-inch M1/M3/M4 | Integrated (not upgradeable) | — | Storage is part of the Apple Silicon chip |
Tools and process we use to open your iMac safely
- Display separation wheel: A motorised cutting wheel runs along the adhesive perimeter — no flex cuts, no cracked glass. The same method Apple authorised centres use.
- OEM VHB adhesive strips: Original-specification Very High Bond adhesive strips are used on reseal — not generic tape. These maintain the original display seal strength and dust resistance.
- Thermal sensor calibration: Some iMac HDD-to-SSD upgrades require thermal sensor management software (Macs Fan Control or OCLP-level patches) to prevent the iMac from running the fan at maximum speed after replacing a drive that had a built-in temperature sensor. We handle this as part of every relevant upgrade.
- Anti-static precautions: All internal work is performed on an ESD-safe mat with grounding straps. Static discharge is one of the most common causes of secondary damage during DIY upgrades.

iMac SSD upgrade — FAQ
How much does an iMac SSD upgrade cost?
iAssist charges R3,800 for a 500GB SSD upgrade where we supply the drive. This includes the SSD (R1,600), OEM adhesive strips (R400), full labour for display removal, internal dust clean, and reseal. If you supply your own compatible SSD, the fitting cost is R1,800 which includes adhesive strips and the same full service.
Why does an iMac SSD upgrade cost more than a MacBook upgrade?
Unlike a MacBook, opening an iMac requires carefully removing the entire display using professional separation tools and a controlled heating process. The display is sealed with adhesive strips which must be replaced on reseal. This adds significant labour compared to a MacBook where the base simply unscrews. We also perform a full internal dust clean while the display is open.
What is a Fusion Drive and is it worth replacing?
A Fusion Drive combines a small SSD with a spinning hard drive managed by macOS to appear as one volume. As the spinning drive ages it becomes the bottleneck and the iMac slows significantly. Replacing the entire Fusion Drive with a single pure SSD eliminates this bottleneck completely and is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make on an older iMac.
Will my data be migrated to the new SSD?
Data migration is included in the SSD upgrade service. We clone your existing drive to the new SSD so your files, apps, and settings transfer exactly. Boot times and performance improve immediately — your iMac feels like a different machine.
Which iMac models can have an SSD upgrade?
All Intel iMac models from 2013 onwards can have their internal storage replaced with an SSD. The 27-inch models from 2017–2020 also have a PCIe NVMe blade slot accessible without opening the display for an additional SSD. iMac M1, M3, and M4 models have storage integrated into the chip and cannot be upgraded.
How long does an iMac SSD upgrade take?
Most iMac SSD upgrades are completed within 4 to 6 hours. We call you when ready. Drop off in the morning and collect same afternoon in most cases.
My iMac 27-inch already has a small SSD blade — can I upgrade it?
Yes. The 27-inch iMac from 2017–2020 has a PCIe NVMe blade slot that can be upgraded to a larger, faster drive without removing the display. This is a quick same-day job. We can also replace the main SATA drive if present.
Do you offer collection for iMac SSD upgrades?
Yes — R500 door-to-door collection and return across Gauteng. iMacs are heavy and we handle transport carefully. WhatsApp us on 078 742 4769 to arrange pickup.
