Important — iMac Pro parts availability: The iMac Pro was discontinued in March 2021. Replacement parts are significantly rarer than for the regular iMac line and may need to be sourced internationally. iAssist always confirms parts availability and cost before issuing a repair quote. We will tell you honestly if a repair is not economically viable or if parts cannot be sourced.

Why iMac Pro repair in South Africa is hard to find

The iMac Pro was sold in relatively small numbers globally compared to the consumer iMac line. In South Africa, that translates to almost no local parts stock and a repair market that largely refuses the work. Most shops that do accept iMac Pro machines are either guessing at the fault or waiting weeks for parts with no clear timeline.

Component Local availability iAssist approach
5K display assembly Occasional local stock Sourced locally where possible — same panel as 2014–2017 27-inch
Logic board (Vega 56/64) Rare — usually none locally International specialist suppliers — 2–4 week lead time, quoted upfront
500W power supply Very rare locally Sourced internationally — lead time confirmed before you commit
ECC DDR4 2666MHz server RAM Available from server suppliers Sourced to order — price confirmed on booking
Proprietary SSD Almost none locally International sourcing — T1 encryption implications explained upfront
Thermal compound / adhesive Available Noctua NT-H1 / OEM VHB strips — in stock
What iAssist does differently for iMac Pro owners. We maintain relationships with specialist Mac parts suppliers in the UK, EU, and US specifically to service machines like the iMac Pro. Every quote includes the parts cost, the sourcing timeline, and the labour — before you commit to anything. If a part cannot be sourced within a reasonable timeframe or at a cost that makes the repair viable, we tell you immediately rather than holding your machine indefinitely.

What we repair on the iMac Pro

iMac Pro RAM upgrade — what you need to know

  • Yes — the iMac Pro RAM is upgradeable. Unlike some iMac models where RAM is soldered, the iMac Pro has 4 physical RAM slots that can be accessed by a specialist technician.
  • Not SO-DIMMs — server RAM. The iMac Pro uses full-size 288-pin DDR4 2666MHz ECC DIMMs — the same type found in Xeon workstation servers. Standard laptop or desktop SO-DIMMs will not fit.
  • RDIMM or LRDIMM — do not mix. The slots support either ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) modules, but you cannot mix the two types. LRDIMM allows higher density (up to 64GB per stick, 256GB total).
  • Maximum configuration: 256GB (4×64GB LRDIMM). Apple officially supports 128GB but higher capacities work.
  • Access requires full disassembly. Unlike the regular 27-inch iMac where RAM is accessible via a rear panel, the iMac Pro requires display removal followed by complete logic board extraction to reach the RAM slots. This is a 3–5 hour specialist job.
  • Parts sourced to order. DDR4 2666MHz ECC server RAM is not commonly stocked locally. We source and price on request — contact us via WhatsApp with your current RAM configuration and target capacity.

R500
Why everything is assessment + quote: iMac Pro logic boards, RAM, SSDs, and PSUs are produced in far smaller quantities than regular iMac parts. A 2017 iMac Pro logic board costs significantly more than a 2017 iMac 27-inch board and may require international sourcing with lead times of 1–4 weeks. iAssist will always give you a full written quote with parts cost, sourcing timeline, and labour before any work begins. If the repair is not financially sensible for your machine's current value, we will say so.

How the T1 chip affects iMac Pro repairs

  • Storage is encrypted by the T1 chip. Unlike pre-T1 Macs, you cannot simply remove the SSD and read it on another machine. The encryption keys are tied to the T1 chip on the original logic board.
  • Data recovery requires the original board. If your iMac Pro logic board has failed, data recovery means restoring the board to a working state first — then cloning the data. We always attempt board restoration before declaring data unrecoverable.
  • Logic board replacement = potential data loss. If the original board cannot be restored and must be replaced, the encrypted data on the SSD will not be accessible on the new board. Back up your iMac Pro regularly.
  • Secure boot is enforced. The T1 chip validates the boot process — this makes some repair procedures more complex than on regular Intel iMacs. We account for this in our process.

iMac Pro repair — FAQ

Can the iMac Pro be repaired?

Yes — but parts availability is the primary constraint. The iMac Pro was discontinued in 2021 and components are significantly rarer than those for the regular iMac line. iAssist performs a free diagnostic, identifies the exact fault, confirms parts availability, and gives you a written quote before any work begins. We will always be honest about what is and is not achievable.

Can the RAM be upgraded on the iMac Pro?

Technically yes — the iMac Pro uses ECC DDR4 2666MHz SO-DIMMs which are replaceable by a specialist. However, unlike the regular 27-inch iMac's rear panel, the iMac Pro requires full display removal and logic board extraction to access the RAM slots. Parts availability and cost are confirmed before quoting.

What is the T1 chip and how does it affect repairs?

The iMac Pro was the first Mac with a T1 security chip, which encrypts all storage and ties the encryption keys to that specific board. If the logic board fails, data cannot be recovered by simply removing the SSD — the original board must be restored to a working state first. iAssist always attempts board restoration before declaring data unrecoverable.

My iMac Pro has Vega GPU artefacts — is it repairable?

The AMD Radeon Pro Vega GPU is integrated into the logic board. GPU failure means logic board replacement. Parts are rare and expensive, and may require international sourcing. We give you a full written quote including parts cost and sourcing timeline — and if the repair cost is not economically sensible, we will tell you so.

Do you offer collection for the iMac Pro?

Yes — R500 insured door-to-door collection and return across Gauteng via Eliz Courier. The iMac Pro is heavy and we handle transport with care. WhatsApp us on 078 742 4769 to arrange.

My iMac Pro shows No Bluetooth after a repair elsewhere — is that fixable?

Yes — the iMac Pro Bluetooth module is connected via an internal cable that is easily dislodged during repair work. If Bluetooth disappeared after your machine was previously opened by another shop, it is almost certainly a disconnected or damaged antenna cable rather than a hardware failure. We see this regularly on machines that have been through inexperienced repair attempts. Free diagnostic to confirm — straightforward fix if it is the cable.

Can the iMac Pro be upgraded to a faster processor?

No. The Intel Xeon W processor in the iMac Pro is soldered directly to the logic board in a BGA package — it cannot be removed or upgraded. The iMac Pro's performance tier is fixed at the configuration purchased. RAM can be upgraded with specialist sourcing and full disassembly, but the CPU and GPU are permanently integrated into the board.

How do I know if my iMac Pro fault is worth repairing given the machine's current value?

This is the right question to ask. iAssist gives you the repair cost in writing after the free diagnostic, and we will explicitly tell you if we believe the repair cost is disproportionate to the machine's current market value. We would rather you make an informed decision than spend money on a repair that doesn't make financial sense.
