iMac data recovery scenarios
iMac won't boot into macOS
Stuck on loading bar, black screen, or boot loop. Usually corrupted macOS or failing drive — data physically intact in most cases.
Drive clicking or making noise
Mechanical failure in progress. Stop using immediately and bring in — every minute reduces recovery chances.
Liquid-damaged iMac
Drive assessed for damage before repair begins. SSDs survive liquid better than hard drives. Recovery attempted first.
Accidental file deletion
Files deleted and Trash emptied. Recovery possible using filesystem-level tools in many cases, depending on drive activity since deletion.
Drive not detected at startup
macOS cannot find the boot drive. Physical connection fault, corrupted partition table, or drive failure. All diagnosable.
Failed SSD after macOS update
Some macOS updates expose failing SSDs. Drive was marginal before the update — recovery still possible in most cases.
iMac dropped or physically damaged
Physical impact can damage drive connection or the drive itself. Assessment determines recovery scope.
Corrupted Time Machine backup
Time Machine backup drive corrupted and files inaccessible. Recovery from the backup volume performed separately.

Recovery across HFS+, APFS, Fusion Drives & Apple Silicon
Storage formats we recover from
- HFS+ (Mac OS Extended): Used on older spinning hard drives and HDDs in iMacs up to approximately 2017. Well-understood format with mature recovery tooling. High recovery rates for most failure modes.
- APFS (Apple File System): Used on SSDs from macOS High Sierra onwards. Copy-on-write architecture means recently deleted files often remain recoverable. Snapshot-based recovery also possible if Time Machine snapshots exist.
- Fusion Drive (CoreStorage logical volume group): A Fusion Drive presents as one volume but is actually a SATA HDD and a PCIe SSD managed by macOS CoreStorage. Recovery requires reassembling the logical volume group from both physical drives — one failing component can make the entire volume inaccessible. We recover from both drives independently and reconstruct where possible.
- FileVault encrypted volumes: If FileVault is enabled, the recovery password or iCloud recovery key is required. Without it, the volume cannot be decrypted and data is unrecoverable regardless of drive health. We advise clients to locate this before bringing the machine in.
T2 chip & Apple Silicon — data recovery via board restoration
- T2 chip (2020 iMac): The T2 security chip encrypts all storage with keys tied to the specific T2 chip. If the T2 chip fails or the logic board is replaced, the storage encryption keys are lost and data cannot be recovered through any means — including chip desoldering. Recovery in T2 machines requires restoring the original logic board to working condition.
- Apple Silicon M1 / M3 / M4: Storage is integrated directly into the Apple Silicon package — it cannot be desoldered and read independently. Data recovery on these machines is only possible by restoring the logic board itself to a bootable state and then cloning the data normally.
- Non-T2 Intel iMac (2013–2019): The SSD blade or SATA drive can be connected directly to external recovery equipment. This is the most straightforward recovery path and has the highest success rate.
- Our approach: For any machine where board restoration is required for data recovery, we perform the restoration work first, recover the data, confirm you have everything, and then discuss any further hardware repairs separately.

Free diagnostic
Drive health assessed using professional tools. Extent of failure determined and recovery likelihood estimated before any quote.
Written scope and quote
Full recovery scope confirmed in writing — what we expect to recover, the method, and the cost. You decide before we proceed.
Drive cloned or extracted
Before any recovery attempt, we create a sector-by-sector clone of the failing drive to work from. Original drive untouched.
Data recovery performed
Recovered files verified for integrity. All readable data extracted to external drive.
Data confirmed with you
You verify the recovered files are correct before we proceed with any repair work on the iMac itself.
Repair or return
Once data is secured, we proceed with any iMac repair you need — or simply return the recovered data if no further repair is required.

iMac data recovery — FAQ
Can you recover data from an iMac that won't turn on?
In many cases yes. If the storage drive itself is undamaged — which is often the case even when the logic board or power supply has failed — we can connect the drive directly to specialist recovery equipment and extract your files. We always assess data recovery before any repair work begins if this is requested.
My iMac crashed and won't boot — is my data still there?
Most likely yes. A failure to boot is usually caused by a corrupted macOS installation, a failing drive, or a filesystem error — not the loss of your actual data. The data physically remains on the drive in most cases. We diagnose the exact fault and advise on recovery before any work begins.
How much does iMac data recovery cost?
iMac data recovery ranges from R900 to R2,800 depending on the fault. A simple filesystem repair or drive clone where the hardware is still partially functional is at the lower end. Physically damaged drives requiring specialist hardware-level intervention are at the higher end. We confirm exact cost after the free diagnostic assessment.
My iMac SSD is clicking — can you still recover the data?
A clicking drive indicates mechanical failure — in a traditional HDD this is a head or platter fault. SSDs do not click in the same way, but unusual noises from storage indicate imminent failure. Stop using the drive immediately. The longer a failing drive operates the less data can be recovered. Bring it in urgently.
Can you recover data from a liquid-damaged iMac?
We attempt data recovery from liquid-damaged iMacs as part of the liquid damage repair process. If the storage drive itself has not been directly shorted, recovery rates are good — particularly for SSDs which are more resilient to liquid than traditional hard drives. We assess the drive before any further repair work begins.
Will you attempt data recovery before repairing my iMac?
Yes — always. If you need data recovery, we perform it before any repair work begins. We never start a repair that could compromise data without first securing the data or getting explicit confirmation from you that this is acceptable.
What types of files can you recover?
All file types — documents, photos, videos, music, emails, application data. We recover everything readable from the storage medium and transfer it to an external drive you supply or we can provide one.
Do you offer collection for iMac data recovery?
Yes — R500 door-to-door collection across Gauteng. If liquid damage is involved, keep the machine off until our courier arrives. WhatsApp us on 078 742 4769 to arrange pickup.
