iMac display problems we repair
Cracked or shattered glass
Front glass impact damage. On 2013–2014 models glass is separate from the LCD — glass-only replacement possible at lower cost.
Dead pixels or display lines
Vertical or horizontal lines, dead pixel clusters, or colour banding across part of the screen.
Backlight failure
Screen completely dark but iMac still running — audible startup sound, visible with a torch. Backlight board or TCON repair.
Image retention or burn-in
Persistent ghost images from static content. Common on older 27-inch iMacs used for extended periods.
Yellow tint or colour shift
Partial yellowing, warm patches, or uneven colour across the display — adhesive delamination or panel fault.
No display at startup
iMac powers on — fan spins, drives spin — but no image appears. External monitor test required to isolate display vs logic board fault.
Flickering or flashing screen
Intermittent flickering during use or at startup. Can indicate display cable fault, GPU issue, or failing backlight driver.
Physical impact damage
Pressure marks, blotches, or large distorted areas following impact. Panel replacement required.

LG panel faults & model-specific display issues
Certain iMac display faults follow well-documented patterns tied to specific panel suppliers and model years. Understanding these helps us quote accurately and confirms whether a full panel replacement or a component-level backlight repair is the right call.
Late 2014 & 2015 27-inch iMac — LG 5K panel failure symptoms
- 5K image retention / burn-in: Ghost images of static content (menu bar, dock icons) visible as a faint overlay — common on LG 5K panels after extended daily use at full brightness.
- Pink hue / ghosting at screen edges: A pink or magenta tint along one or more edges of the display. Caused by LG panel delamination or adhesive failure at the edge bonds.
- Flashlight effect (no backlight): Screen appears black but content is faintly visible when a torch is shone directly at the display. Indicates backlight driver IC failure — the panel itself may be reusable.
- Vertical or horizontal display lines: Single or multiple lines across the display caused by failed T-CON (timing controller) board or damaged display cable. T-CON replacement is possible without full panel swap on some models.
Intel unibody vs Apple Silicon 24-inch — display replacement differences
- Intel iMac (2013–2020): Display assembly is separate from the logic board. The panel, glass, and backlight assembly are replaceable as a unit or individually (on older models with separate glass). Adhesive strips seal the display.
- iMac 24-inch M1 / M3 / M4: The display is deeply integrated with the thermal and power architecture. Screen replacement requires careful handling of the entire front assembly and is more time-intensive than Intel models. Component-level diagnosis is essential before quoting.
- Retina calibration: After any 5K or 4K display replacement we run display calibration to verify colour accuracy, white point, and brightness uniformity match Apple specifications.

iMac screen repair — FAQ
What does iMac screen repair cost?
iMac screen replacement ranges from R2,500 to R8,500 depending on the model and screen size. The 21.5-inch Intel models differ significantly from the 27-inch 5K and the 24-inch Apple Silicon iMacs. All pricing is confirmed after a free diagnostic — you receive a written fixed-price quote before any work begins.
What is the difference between the glass and the LCD panel?
iMac models from 2013 to 2014 have a separate front glass held by magnets and a separate LCD behind it. If only the glass is cracked with no visible image damage, only the glass needs replacing. From 2015 onwards Apple fused the glass directly to the LCD — they are one laminated unit and must be replaced together, which increases the cost.
My iMac screen is black but it still runs — is that the display or the logic board?
Connect an external monitor via Thunderbolt or HDMI. If your desktop appears on the external display, the logic board is fine and the issue is the internal backlight or display cable. Backlight repair is significantly less expensive than a full screen replacement and we will advise you after the free diagnostic.
Can you repair just the cracked glass on a 2013 or 2014 iMac?
Yes — on 2013 and 2014 iMac models the front glass and LCD are separate components. If the glass is cracked but the image underneath is undamaged, we can replace only the glass at a lower cost than a full panel replacement.
How do you open an iMac to replace the screen?
We use professional display separation tools and a controlled heating process to release the adhesive holding the display. The display is carefully lifted, the damaged component replaced, and the display resealed with fresh OEM-grade adhesive strips. We also perform a full internal dust clean while the display is open.
How long does iMac screen repair take?
Most iMac screen replacements are completed within 24 to 48 hours once parts are confirmed available. We carry components for the most common iMac models. We will give you a clear timeline when you drop your iMac off.
Do you repair iMac screens with dead pixels or image retention?
Yes — we repair a range of display faults including dead pixels, image retention, backlight failure, flickering, colour distortion, and vertical or horizontal lines. The 27-inch iMac is particularly prone to backlight and GPU-related display issues as it ages.
Do you offer collection and delivery for iMac screen repair?
Yes — R500 door-to-door collection and return across Gauteng via Eliz Courier. WhatsApp us on 078 742 4769 and we will arrange everything from your door.
