Is your iMac overheating?
Fan running at full speed from startup
iMac fan spins up immediately on boot and never settles. Usually dried thermal paste or a faulty temperature sensor.
iMac hot to touch on the rear vents
The rear aluminium shell runs uncomfortably hot. Normal iMacs are warm — hot is a thermal warning sign.
Performance drops under load
iMac slows dramatically when editing video, running Lightroom, or doing anything intensive. Classic thermal throttling — the processor reducing speed to manage heat.
Fan noise is grinding or rattling
A damaged fan bearing causes grinding or rattling noise. The fan needs replacement before it fails entirely.
iMac shuts itself off unexpectedly
Thermal protection shutdown. The CPU or GPU hit a critical temperature and macOS cut power to prevent hardware damage.
System is 5+ years old and never serviced
Thermal paste degrades with age and heat cycling. Dust accumulates progressively. A 5-year-old iMac that has never been opened almost certainly needs this service.
Fan at maximum after load-shedding damage
An SMC fault caused by power surge can lock the fan at maximum speed permanently. Diagnostic determines whether it is thermal or electronic.
GPU artefacts during warm-up
Distorted display artefacts that appear after the iMac warms up point to AMD GPU solder stress under heat — thermal management is critical.

Thermal compound, kernel_task throttling & what we actually do
Thermal compounds we use
- Noctua NT-H1 / NT-H2: Professional-grade thermal compound used on CPU and GPU dies. Excellent long-term stability, non-electrically conductive, and rated for sustained high-temperature operation.
- Arctic MX-6: High-performance carbon-based compound for high heat-output processors. Used on iMac 27-inch 2017–2019 where CPU and GPU temperatures under load are particularly demanding.
- Thermal pads (GPU VRAM & VRM): In addition to thermal paste on the CPU and GPU die, the VRAM chips and voltage regulation modules (VRMs) on the 27-inch logic board use thermal pads to transfer heat to the heatsink. We replace these alongside the paste — factory pads harden and crack over time just as thermal paste does.
- We do not use generic "silver paste" or low-grade compounds. The iMac runs hotter than most computers due to its sealed form factor — compound quality directly affects longevity.
kernel_task & thermal throttling — what is actually happening
- kernel_task at 400–900% CPU: When CPU or GPU temperatures exceed safe thresholds, macOS spawns kernel_task threads that intentionally consume CPU cycles to slow the processor down and reduce heat output. This is macOS working correctly — but the root cause is inadequate cooling.
- Thermal throttling: The processor reduces its clock speed (e.g., from 3.6GHz to 1.2GHz) to shed heat. A video export that took 8 minutes at full clock speed can take 40+ minutes when throttled.
- After thermal paste replacement: CPU temperatures typically drop 15–25°C under load. kernel_task disappears from Activity Monitor. The processor runs at its rated clock speed continuously. Performance is restored to factory specification — often dramatically so.
- Fan speed returns to normal: The iMac fan drops from 2,800–3,600 RPM (maximum) to 1,200–1,800 RPM (idle) and only spins up under genuine sustained load — not just from opening a browser.

iMac fan and thermal service — FAQ
Why is my iMac fan running at full speed all the time?
Persistent maximum fan speed on an iMac is most commonly caused by dried-out thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, a failed temperature sensor IC, or a heavily dust-blocked heatsink and fan assembly. After years of operation the thermal compound dries and cracks, losing its ability to transfer heat efficiently — the iMac compensates by running the fan at full speed continuously.
My iMac is getting very hot and running slowly — what is wrong?
This is thermal throttling — when the CPU or GPU temperature exceeds a safe threshold, macOS reduces processor speed to limit heat output. The result is a machine that feels dramatically slower than it should be. Replacing the thermal paste and cleaning the internal dust brings temperatures down and full performance is restored immediately.
How much does iMac fan and thermal service cost?
The full thermal service is R2,500 — this covers display removal, CPU and GPU thermal compound replacement, full internal dust clean, and display reseal with OEM adhesive strips. It typically takes 2–3 hours depending on the iMac model and the scope of work required. Fan replacement if the fan bearing has failed is quoted separately after diagnostic. All pricing is confirmed in writing before work begins.
How often should thermal paste be replaced on an iMac?
On a heavily used iMac, thermal paste typically degrades significantly after 4 to 6 years. If your iMac is 5 years or older and running hot or loud, thermal paste replacement is almost certainly overdue. It is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend the life of an older machine.
Can a dusty iMac cause permanent damage?
Yes — prolonged high-temperature operation caused by dust blockage and degraded thermal paste accelerates wear on capacitors, GPU solder joints, and the logic board. AMD Radeon GPU failures on 27-inch iMacs are frequently accelerated by years of thermal stress. A thermal service is preventive maintenance as much as it is a repair.
My iMac fan makes a grinding or rattling noise — is that fixable?
Yes. A grinding or rattling fan has a failing bearing and should be replaced before it stops entirely. A seized fan causes the iMac to thermal throttle or shut down entirely to protect the processor. Fan replacement is straightforward and we carry fans for most iMac models.
Will you clean the inside of my iMac while you have it open?
Yes — a full internal dust clean is included in every thermal service. We clean the heatsink fins, fan blades, and all internal air channels while the display is open. If the iMac is opened for any other repair we also include the dust clean at no extra charge.
Do you offer collection for iMac thermal service?
Yes — R500 door-to-door collection and return across Gauteng via Eliz Courier. WhatsApp us on 078 742 4769 to arrange pickup.
