iMac power faults we repair
iMac completely dead — no response
No fan, no chime, no display. Usually a blown PSU, failed power rail capacitor, or surge damage. Fully diagnosable and repairable in most cases.
iMac powers on then immediately shuts off
Machine starts briefly — fan spins, drive spins — then cuts out within seconds. Failing PSU unable to sustain load.
Load-shedding or power surge damage
One of the most common iMac faults in SA. Surge on power restoration damages PSU capacitors and board-level power ICs.
Intermittent power — starts sometimes, not others
Works some days, dead others. Failing capacitor or transistor that recovers when cold. Worsens over time.
Unexpected shutdowns during use
iMac cuts out randomly during operation. Can indicate failing PSU, overheating, or power management IC fault on logic board.
No power after lightning strike
Nearby lightning can surge through power lines and damage the PSU and logic board simultaneously. Full diagnosis required.
iMac powers on but no display
Separate fault from power supply — likely display, backlight, or GPU. We diagnose and route to correct repair.
Clicking or popping noise on power attempt
Audible pop when pressing power button with no startup — common sign of a blown capacitor in the PSU.

PSU internal failure modes & SMC diagnostics
LiteOn & Delta PSU — common internal failure patterns
- Primary capacitor failure: The large electrolytic capacitors on the primary side of the PSU (typically 400V, 100–220µF) fail after years of thermal cycling and load-shedding stress. Symptoms: iMac dead or intermittent. These are replaceable at component level.
- Shorted bridge rectifier: The bridge rectifier converts AC from the wall to DC. Load-shedding surges can blow the rectifier instantly. Identified via continuity testing; replaced without full PSU swap in most cases.
- Secondary rail capacitor bulging: Lower-voltage output capacitors (5V, 12V rails) bulge and leak after extended high-temperature operation. Visible inspection confirms; replaced with equivalent-spec capacitors.
- Logic board safe-mode cutoff: The logic board monitors PSU output voltages and cuts power if rails deviate more than ±5%. A PSU delivering 11.4V on the 12V rail causes the board to shut down protectively — appearing as a dead iMac even though the logic board is healthy.
- Blown primary fuse: A surge can blow the glass fuse on the PSU primary input. A simple and inexpensive fix — but must be investigated to confirm the fuse didn't blow due to a downstream short on the logic board.
Try an SMC reset before assuming the worst
- The System Management Controller (SMC) manages power, fans, and startup on Intel iMacs. A hung SMC can prevent startup even when all hardware is healthy.
- Intel iMac SMC reset: Shut down → unplug power cable → wait 15 seconds → plug back in → wait 5 seconds → press power button. This resets the SMC without losing any data.
- If the iMac starts after an SMC reset, the hardware is fine and the fault was an SMC state corruption — common after power interruptions.
- If the iMac remains completely unresponsive after an SMC reset with a known-good power outlet, the fault is hardware — bring it in for a free diagnostic.
- Apple Silicon (M1/M3/M4): There is no SMC — power management is handled by the secure enclave. Simply hold the power button for 10 seconds to force a shutdown, then restart normally.

iMac power supply repair — FAQ
My iMac won't turn on at all — is that the power supply?
A completely dead iMac is most commonly caused by a failed power supply unit, a blown capacitor on the logic board power rail, or surge damage from load-shedding. Our technicians run a full board-level diagnostic to isolate whether the fault is in the PSU itself or on the logic board power circuit before quoting any repair.
Can load-shedding damage an iMac power supply?
Yes — and this is one of the most common iMac faults we see in South Africa. Power surges when Eskom restores supply, as well as the cumulative effect of repeated on-off cycles, can damage power supply capacitors and board-level power ICs. A surge protector or UPS significantly reduces this risk. If your iMac died around a load-shedding event, a power supply fault is the most likely cause.
How much does iMac power supply repair cost?
Component-level power supply repair starts from R1,200. Full PSU unit replacement ranges from R3,800 (21.5-inch) to R5,000 (27-inch) depending on model, as the PSU unit alone costs R2,500–R2,999 before labour and adhesive strips depending on the fault location and model. If the fault is in the external PSU unit itself it is typically lower cost. If the power fault is traced to the logic board it may involve component-level IC replacement. A free diagnostic confirms the exact fault before any quote is issued.
My iMac powers on briefly then shuts off — is that the power supply?
This is a classic sign of a failing power supply unable to sustain load under operation. It can also indicate a failing capacitor on the logic board power rail. Our diagnostic distinguishes between these faults clearly before any work begins.
My iMac turns on sometimes but not others — what is wrong?
Intermittent power faults — where the iMac powers on some days but not others — usually point to a capacitor or transistor failing under temperature cycling. As the component heats up it fails; when cold it recovers temporarily. This is a component-level fault that worsens over time and should be addressed before it becomes a permanent no-power situation.
Will my data be safe during a power supply repair?
Yes. Power supply repair does not involve the storage drive in any way. Your data is completely safe throughout the repair process.
How long does iMac power supply repair take?
Diagnostic is completed same day. Most power supply repairs are completed within 1 to 3 business days depending on parts availability. We give you a clear timeline upfront.
Do you offer collection for iMac power supply repair?
Yes — R500 door-to-door collection and return across Gauteng via Eliz Courier. WhatsApp us on 078 742 4769 to arrange pickup from your door.
