iMac macOS Upgrade
iMac macOS UpgradeRun Sonoma on Your Older iMac
Apple stopped updating your iMac. We didn't. OCLP installs the latest macOS — Sonoma, Sequoia, Tahoe — on 2013-2019 iMacs Apple says are too old. Latest Safari, current security, all your apps still working, and a 6-month iAssist warranty. Free diagnostic, nationwide courier.
Requires SSD + 8GB RAM · Data wiped · Clean install · Silvamonte, Johannesburg
Your iMac still has years left in it
Apple dropped support for your iMac — not because it's broken, but because it's profitable for them to do so. Your hardware is perfectly capable of running modern macOS. OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) is an open-source tool maintained by dedicated engineers that restores that support, allowing your iMac to boot into Sonoma or Ventura with full hardware acceleration, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and iCloud.
The result: your 2013–2017 iMac runs a current operating system, stays compatible with modern apps, and gets security updates — for R1,500 instead of R30,000+ for a new machine.
Before we beginRequirements
✦ SSD installed
Your iMac must have a solid-state drive fitted. A spinning hard drive or Fusion Drive cannot handle Sonoma. Don't have one? We install SSDs from R850 — ask about a bundle.
✦ Minimum 8GB RAM
macOS Sonoma requires at least 8GB RAM to run comfortably. Most 27-inch iMacs support upgrades to 16–128GB (R1,600 per 8GB DDR4). RAM upgrades on 27-inch models need no display removal — we can do it at the same visit.
✦ Data backup first
The upgrade requires a complete wipe and clean install. Back up your data to an external drive or Time Machine before bringing your iMac in. We are not responsible for data lost during the process.
Data migration — separate
Restoring your files, apps, and settings after the upgrade is a separate service. Ask us for a quote when you book if you need data migrated back onto the machine after the clean install.
Which macOS can your iMac run?
We recommend the highest stable version supported by OCLP for your model. Sonoma is the current recommendation for 2013–2017 iMacs. 2019 models run Sonoma natively and can be upgraded to Sequoia via OCLP.

Assessment
We check your iMac model, confirm SSD and RAM meet requirements, and verify OCLP compatibility. Free diagnostic — no charge if your machine doesn't qualify.
Preparation
If an SSD or RAM upgrade is needed first, we do that before the macOS install. You receive a written quote before any work begins.
Clean wipe
The drive is securely wiped. All existing data is removed. This is required for a stable OCLP installation — there is no in-place upgrade path.
OpenCore + macOS install
OpenCore Legacy Patcher is configured and installed to the EFI partition. A clean macOS Sonoma installer is run and all necessary root patches are applied post-install.
Full system test
We verify Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, iCloud sign-in, display output, GPU acceleration, USB ports, and general performance before returning your iMac.
Collection or return
Pick up from our Silvamonte workshop or we arrange return delivery. Most upgrades are completed same day or next morning.
Component-level expertise behind every upgrade
Free diagnostic
We confirm your iMac qualifies before charging anything. No R599 assessment fee — our diagnostic is always free.

6-month warranty

iMac macOS upgrade — FAQ
What is OpenCore Legacy Patcher?
OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) is an open-source project that allows older Mac models — dropped from official macOS support — to run the latest versions of macOS. It installs a custom bootloader that injects the necessary drivers and patches at startup, making it possible to run Sonoma or Ventura on 2013–2019 iMacs that Apple would otherwise restrict to Big Sur, Monterey, or Ventura.
Which iMac models can be upgraded?
iAssist supports OCLP upgrades on all iMac models from Late 2013 through 2019. This covers 21.5-inch and 27-inch Intel models across 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017. 2019 iMacs run Sonoma natively and can be upgraded to Sequoia via OCLP. All models require an SSD and a minimum of 8GB RAM before the upgrade is performed.
Why do I need an SSD?
macOS Sonoma and Ventura are far more demanding on storage than older versions. Installing Sonoma onto a spinning hard drive or Fusion Drive results in an unusable experience — boot times of 5+ minutes and constant beachballing. An SSD brings boot times to under 20 seconds and makes the whole system feel fast. If your iMac still has a hard drive, we install an SSD first from R850 and then perform the OCLP upgrade.
Why must my data be wiped?
OCLP requires a clean macOS installation to work correctly. In-place upgrades from an older macOS using OpenCore frequently result in boot failures, broken drivers, and system instability. A clean wipe and fresh install is the only reliable method. Please back up everything important before dropping your iMac off — or ask us about our separate data migration service.
Can you back up or restore my data?
Data backup and post-install migration is available as a separate service, not included in the R1,500 OCLP fee. If you would like us to transfer your files and apps back onto the machine after the clean install, let us know when you book and we will quote you separately. We always recommend clients back up independently before any work begins.
Will everything work after the upgrade?
The vast majority of everyday functionality works normally after an OCLP installation — Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, iCloud, productivity apps, web browsers, and most creative software. Some GPU-accelerated effects on 2013–2014 machines may require root patching, which we apply as part of the service. We will advise you on any specific limitations for your model before work begins.
How long does the upgrade take?
The full process — wiping the drive, installing OpenCore, performing a clean macOS installation, applying root patches, and testing — typically takes 3 to 5 hours. Drop your iMac off in the morning and collect it the same afternoon or the following morning.
Is it worth upgrading my old iMac rather than buying new?
For most 2013–2019 iMacs in good working condition, the upgrade makes clear financial sense. A new iMac M4 starts at significantly more than the combined cost of an SSD upgrade and the OCLP service. After the upgrade your machine runs a current operating system, stays compatible with modern apps, and receives OCLP security patches for several more years. We give you an honest assessment before you commit to anything — if it doesn't make sense for your specific model, we will say so.
