Vintage territory. Original batteries on these models are well past their service life and are the most likely to swell. A swollen battery is a fire risk and will eventually push the screen off. Replace any visibly swollen battery immediately. watchOS support for these models has ended — replacement is feasible but the machine is on borrowed time.

How to check your Apple Watch battery health: On your iPhone, open the Watch app → My Watch → General → About → Battery. Or directly on your Watch: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Every Apple Watch generation eventually develops a personality — usually expressed through a specific design fault that turns up like clockwork after a few years of use. Below are the ones we see most often on the workshop bench. None is terminal. Each has a well-defined repair path and we've handled all of them many times over.

Swollen battery — screen lift

The most common Apple Watch fault we see. Battery cells expand with age and push the display assembly up and out of the case — first a small gap at the edge, then the screen lifts visibly. The Series 0-3 era is most affected (Apple ran an extended service programme that has now ended) but it happens on Series 4-6 frequently and on later models with age.

A swollen lithium-polymer cell is a fire risk. Stop wearing the Watch immediately.

Digital Crown corrosion & sweat damage

Sweat, sunscreen, and salt water build up around the Digital Crown over time, particularly on Watches used during workouts or swimming. The Crown gets stuck, scrolls erratically when nothing is touching it, or stops registering presses. Heavy fitness use accelerates the failure.

Prevention tip: rinse your Apple Watch under fresh water after sweaty workouts or swimming.

Series 4 onwards · all back-glass models

Heart rate & sensor failures

The back-glass sensor array on Series 4 onwards houses the heart rate sensor, ECG electrodes, and blood-oxygen sensor on newer models. Cracks in the back glass, sweat ingress around the sensor edges, or impact damage can disable these sensors — sometimes silently, with the Watch reporting "couldn't measure" or unrealistic heart-rate readings.

Apple replaces the whole Watch for this fault. We repair it.

Action Button sticking

The Ultra series added a customisable Action Button on the left side of the case — a useful addition that's also a new ingress point. Hard hits, sweat, sand (the Ultra is marketed as an outdoor/dive Watch), and pressure-washing can all cause the Action Button to stick down or stop registering presses.

Customers often only notice when their assigned action — a workout shortcut, dive mode, torch — fails to trigger.

My Apple Watch screen is lifting off the case. Is that fixable?
Yes — and stop wearing it immediately. A lifting screen means the battery underneath has swollen, which is a fire risk. We safely remove and dispose of the swollen battery, fit a new OEM-grade replacement, and reseal the case using cold-press adhesive equipment. Most repairs are completed in 24–48 hours. This issue is most common on Series 0–3, but appears on later models too with age.
Will Apple Watch repair affect water resistance?
Honest answer: any opened Apple Watch will have reduced water resistance compared to factory new — this is the same policy Apple itself follows. We use professional cold-press adhesive equipment to reseal your Watch as effectively as possible, but we cannot guarantee swim-proof or dive-rated water resistance after a repair. Splashes and rain remain fine; we recommend avoiding swimming, surfing, or deep showers post-repair.
My Digital Crown is stuck or not scrolling. Can it be fixed?
Yes. The most common cause is sweat, sunscreen, or salt ingress around the Crown — particularly on Watches used during workouts or swimming. We disassemble the Crown, deep-clean it, and re-lubricate. If the Crown mechanism itself has corroded internally, we replace the full Crown assembly. Tip for prevention: rinse your Watch under fresh water after sweaty workouts.
How long does Apple Watch repair take?
Screen and battery replacements are typically same-day. Digital Crown and charging coil repairs are usually within 24–48 hours. Liquid damage treatment takes 2–3 business days depending on severity. Logic board chip-level repairs take 1–3 business days. We confirm timing at the time of your free diagnostic.
Is my Apple Watch data safe during repair?
Completely. Your Apple Watch data, health records, activity history, and paired iPhone connection all remain intact throughout the repair. We do not factory reset your Watch unless it's absolutely required for a software repair — and if that's ever the case, we'll tell you before we begin, not after. Your Watch leaves our workshop exactly as it arrived, just fixed.
Is it worth fixing an older Apple Watch (Series 4 / 5 / 6)?
For most repairs, yes. A new Apple Watch SE 3 starts at over R5,000. Battery replacement on a Series 4–6 is R900–R1,800 and gives you another 2–3 years of use. Screen replacement is R1,200–R2,500. We'll honestly tell you during the free diagnostic if a repair isn't economical — for example, if your Series 3 needs a new screen and battery, replacement may be the better choice.
Do you offer a warranty on Apple Watch repairs?
Yes — all Apple Watch repairs are covered by a 6-month warranty on both parts and labour. If the same fault recurs within 6 months, we fix it at no charge. Warranty applies to every repair type, from screen replacements to logic board work.
