What the back assembly contains

The back of your Apple Watch isn't just a piece of glass. It's a precision sensor array bonded to a ceramic or sapphire crystal, sealed against water ingress, and electrically connected to the main board through a delicate flex cable. When you crack the back glass or a sensor fails, you typically need the entire bonded unit replaced — Apple manufactures it as a single component, and that's how we fit it.

Cracked back glass

Drop, impact, or pressure damage. Even hairline cracks compromise water resistance and risk further sensor damage from moisture ingress.

Heart rate sensor failed

Watch can't detect your heart rate, shows 'No data' on Workouts, or readings are wildly inaccurate. Sensor module needs replacement.

ECG not working

ECG app fails to record, shows error, or returns unreadable traces. Sensor electrode contact has failed — common after liquid exposure.

Blood oxygen unavailable

SpO2 readings fail or app shows sensor unavailable. Photodiode sensor degraded — typical after years of UV and sweat exposure.

Moisture under the back glass

Visible condensation, fogging, or droplets under the crystal. Seal has failed — repair is urgent before the main board corrodes.

Skin contact / detection issues

Watch keeps locking or saying it doesn't detect skin contact. Cap-touch sensors on the back glass have failed.

How we replace the back glass & sensors

Free diagnostic

We test heart rate, ECG, blood oxygen, and skin-contact sensors individually to identify which have failed. We also inspect for moisture and corrosion behind the back glass.

Case opening

Specialist heat tooling to release the back glass adhesive without flexing the sensor flex cables. The back is more delicate than the front — a single misstep can damage the OLED above.

Assembly replacement

Failed back-and-sensor assembly removed. New OEM-grade unit fitted with new gasket. Flex cables reseated, electrical continuity confirmed.

Calibration & reseal

Heart rate, ECG, blood oxygen, and skin-contact sensors recalibrated against test signals. Case cold-press resealed for water resistance, then full QC test.

Why iAssist for back glass & sensor repair

Sensor recalibration included

Many shops just swap the back glass and call it done. We recalibrate every sensor against test signals — without this, ECG and blood oxygen often produce garbage readings.

OEM-grade assemblies

We use OEM-grade back glass with original-spec sensor arrays. Cheap aftermarket assemblies typically have lower-quality photodiodes that produce inaccurate readings.

24–48 hour turnaround

Most back glass repairs completed within 24–48 hours. Recalibration adds a few hours but ensures sensors actually work post-repair.

Cold-press resealing included

Back glass replacement always disturbs the water seal. We cold-press reseal with a new gasket to restore water resistance as effectively as possible.

Apple Watch back glass & sensor replacement — frequently asked questions

How much does Apple Watch back glass replacement cost?

Pricing depends on your model. Series 1/2/3 is R600. Series 4/5 is R800. SE/SE 2 is R900. Series 6 is R1,000. Series 7/8/9 is R1,200. Series 10 and SE 3 are R1,300. Series 11 is R1,500. Apple Watch Ultra (all generations) ranges R1,500–R1,800 due to the larger sapphire crystal back. We confirm exact pricing in writing after your free diagnostic.

Can the heart rate sensor be repaired without replacing the back glass?

No. The heart rate sensor, ECG electrodes, and blood oxygen photodiode are all bonded to the back glass as a single sealed assembly — Apple doesn't manufacture them as separate components. If any sensor fails permanently, the entire back assembly must be replaced. Sometimes minor failures are caused by skin oils or sunscreen on the sensor surface — clean the back of the Watch with a damp cloth before booking, in case that's all it needs.

Why is my Apple Watch heart rate not working?

Three common causes: surface contamination (skin oils, sunscreen, hand cream — clean the back), sensor failure (electrical issue requiring assembly replacement), or wrist fit (Watch worn too loose can't get a clean signal). Try cleaning and tightening the strap first. If readings are still missing or wildly wrong on a clean Watch worn correctly, the sensor itself has failed and needs replacement.

What happens to ECG and Blood Oxygen after the back glass is replaced?

Both need recalibration after a back assembly swap, otherwise readings will be inaccurate or unavailable. We perform calibration as part of every back glass repair using calibrated test signals. Your ECG and SpO2 features will work normally afterward — no software setup needed on your end beyond pairing back to your iPhone if pairing was lost during repair.

Will my Apple Watch still be water resistant after back glass replacement?

Honest answer: any opened Apple Watch will have reduced water resistance compared to factory new — this matches Apple's own policy. We replace the back glass gasket and use professional cold-press adhesive equipment to reseal the watch as effectively as possible. Splashes, rain, and hand washing remain fine. We recommend avoiding swimming, surfing, hot tubs, and steam rooms post-repair.

How long does back glass replacement take?

Most back glass replacements are completed within 24–48 hours. The repair itself is straightforward; the rate-limiting step is sensor calibration and the cold-press adhesive cure. For nationwide repairs via The Courier Guy, total turnaround is 2–3 working days door-to-door on overnight service, 5–7 working days on standard.

I see condensation under the back glass — is that fixable?

Yes, but bring it in immediately. Visible moisture under the back crystal means the gasket has failed and water has reached the inside of the case. The back glass needs replacement (with a new seal), but more importantly the main board needs inspection and ultrasonic cleaning before corrosion damages it. Don't wait — corrosion can become unrepairable within days of moisture exposure.

Do you offer a warranty on back glass replacements?

Yes — all Apple Watch back glass and sensor replacements at iAssist are covered by a 6-month warranty on parts, labour, and sensor calibration. If any sensor stops working or the back glass develops issues within six months, we fix it at no charge.

Can you do back glass replacement if I'm not in Gauteng?

Yes — we work with The Courier Guy for fully insured nationwide collection and delivery. After we send you a fixed-price quote, The Courier Guy collects from your door and delivers it back once repaired. Total turnaround is 2–3 working days for overnight, 5–7 working days for standard.
