Apple Watch Series 1, 2 & 3 Repair | Battery & Safety | iAssist

Apple Watch Series 1, 2, & 3 Repair38mm / 42mm · Legacy models · 2015–2017

⚠️ Legacy models · No watchOS support · Swollen battery is fire safety priority

Older Apple Watches still serviceable for some repairs. Swollen battery is the #1 service item we see on these models — fire safety matters more than functionality. End of software support has been reached. We honestly assess economic viability — sometimes we recommend safe disposal over repair when multiple faults coincide.

⚠️ Swollen battery is the #1 priority for older Apple Watches

The most common service item on Series 1, 2, and 3 is swollen battery cases. The cell expands inside the sealed case, lifting the screen off the body and creating fire and chemical hazards. Stop wearing the watch immediately and don't try to push the screen down. Bring it to us within 24 hours for safe disposal of the swollen cell and replacement.

Why older Apple Watches need attention

Series 1, 2, and 3 are 8-10 years old now. Apple has ended watchOS software support — your Watch will continue working with the last supported watchOS but won't get new features or security updates. The dominant service item is swollen battery, followed by dead batteries from age. Some specialty parts have limited availability for these older models. We're transparent about what's economically viable to repair vs what's reached end of life.

Swollen battery (fire safety)

Most common service on these models. Screen lifting off case = battery has swollen. Stop wearing, bring in within 24 hours for safe handling.

Battery completely dead

8-10 years old. Original cells have reached end of life. Replacement at R900 restores function (where economically viable).

Cracked screen

Years of accumulated impact damage. Glass-only repair at R1,000 (Series 3) or R1,000 (Series 1/2) where parts available.

Charging stopped

Charging coil corroded, original charging puck failed, or battery dead. Free diagnostic identifies actual cause before repair.

Crown stuck

Years of sweat ingress causes Crown failure. Deep clean often resolves on Series 3, less reliably on Series 1/2.

Will not power on

Could be dead battery, failed power management, or storage corruption. Free diagnostic identifies the cause and economic viability.

Apple Watch Series 1/2/3 — frequently asked questions

My older Apple Watch screen is lifting — fixable?

Yes — and it's important you bring it in immediately. The lifting screen means the battery has swollen, which is a fire and chemical hazard. We safely remove and dispose of the swollen cell, fit a new battery, and reseal the case. Pricing is R900 — no extra charge for swollen battery handling. Stop wearing it until we've handled it.

Is it worth repairing my Series 3 (or older) Apple Watch?

Honest answer: depends on the fault. Single battery replacement at R900 is worth it for sentimental value or as a basic fitness tracker. Multiple faults reaching R2,000+ usually isn't economical — that approaches the cost of an SE 3 second-hand. Swollen battery cases we always recommend repairing immediately for safety, even if you don't plan to use the watch — to make safe disposal possible.

Will my Series 3 still pair to my iPhone after repair?

Yes — but Series 3 is no longer supported by current iOS Watch app. You'll need to keep the existing pairing intact. If your watch needs full restore (lost pairing), pairing back to current iPhones may not be possible due to software incompatibility. We confirm during diagnostic if this risk applies to your specific repair.

Are parts still available for Series 1, 2, and 3?

Limited but available for most common services. Batteries, screens, and charging components remain stocked. Some specialty parts (specific year-of-manufacture variants) have longer lead times or aren't available. We confirm parts availability when sending your quote.

Does my older Apple Watch still get software updates?

No — Apple has ended watchOS support for Series 1, 2, and 3. Your watch continues working with its last installed watchOS but won't receive feature or security updates going forward. App developers are increasingly dropping support for older watchOS versions, so functionality will gradually reduce over time.

Can my older Apple Watch be turned into a fitness tracker only?

Yes — even without active iPhone pairing or new watchOS, the watch can still track workouts, heart rate, and steps locally. After repair we can set it up in standalone mode for basic fitness tracking. This is a good option for a working older watch you don't need notifications on.

Will my repaired Series 3 still be water resistant?

Honest answer: Series 1/2/3 seals are 8-10 years old and any opened Apple Watch has reduced water resistance vs factory new. We use cold-press resealing to restore as much as practically possible. Splashes and rain are fine. We strongly recommend treating older repaired watches as splash-resistant only — no swimming, hot tubs, or steam rooms.

How long does older Apple Watch repair take?

Most Series 1/2/3 repairs are 24-48 hours. Swollen battery cases get same-day priority queue position for safety reasons. Battery and Crown work usually same-day in Gauteng walk-ins. Limited-stock parts may add 2-3 days. Nationwide via The Courier Guy: 2-3 days door-to-door on overnight.

Apple Watch Repairs — Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Apple Watch still be water-resistant after repair?

We reseal every Apple Watch using professional cold-press adhesive and allow full cure time — giving you the best possible water resistance a repaired device can achieve. While factory IP ratings cannot be officially recertified post-repair, our resealing process is as close as it gets

Do you use genuine Apple parts?

We use OEM-grade parts that are manufactured to the same specifications as Apple's original components — meaning the same brightness, touch sensitivity, and build quality you expect from your Apple Watch. Where genuine Apple parts are available for your specific model, we will always present that as an option. Either way, you are told exactly what part is being used, the cost, and the warranty before we touch your device. No surprises

Do you repair Apple Watch batteries?

Absolutely — battery replacement is one of the most common Apple Watch repairs we do. If your watch is shutting down before the end of the day, showing a Service Battery warning, or simply not holding a charge like it used to, a new battery will restore it to full performance. We use OEM-grade cells built to Apple's original capacity specs, and most battery replacements are completed the same day. Priced from R900 with a 6-month warranty included.

Can Apple Watch screens be repaired?

Yes — Apple Watch screens can be repaired, and in most cases you do not need a full device replacement. At iAssist we replace the OLED display assembly or front glass depending on your specific model, from the original Series 1 right through to the Series 11 and Ultra 2. All screen repairs use OEM-grade parts, are completed within 24–48 hours, and carry a 6-month warranty

How long does an Apple Watch repair take?

Most Apple Watch screen and battery replacements are completed the same day — often within a few hours of drop-off. For more complex repairs such as water damage treatment or Digital Crown replacement, turnaround is typically 24–48 hours. We will always give you a realistic time estimate upfront before any work begins. If you are not local, we offer a collection and delivery service across Gauteng for R300 — your watch is collected, repaired, and returned to your door

How much does Apple Watch screen repair cost in South Africa?

Apple Watch screen repair in South Africa costs between R1,500 and R3,500 at iAssist, depending on your model. A Series 7, 8, or 9 screen replacement sits toward the higher end due to the larger OLED panel, while earlier models like the SE or Series 4 are more affordable. All pricing is confirmed after a free diagnostic assessment — you receive a written quote before we begin, with no hidden fees. For the most accurate price for your specific model, WhatsApp us with your Apple Watch model and we will come back to you within minutes

Do you repair all Apple Watch models including the Ultra?

Yes — we repair every Apple Watch model ever released, including the Ultra and Ultra 2. From the original Series 1 through to the Series 11, SE 1st and 2nd gen, and both Ultra models, we carry parts and have hands-on experience with each generation. Apple Watch Ultra repairs are frequently declined by other repair centres due to the complexity of the 49mm titanium case — we do not decline them. If you are unsure of your model, WhatsApp us a photo and we will identify it for you instantly

Do you offer collection and delivery for Apple Watch repairs?

Yes — we offer a door-to-door collection and delivery service across the entire Gauteng province for R250. You do not need to travel to our Silvamonte repair centre. We collect your Apple Watch, carry out the repair at our workshop, and return it directly to your door. Collection and delivery is available across Johannesburg, Pretoria, and all surrounding Gauteng areas. Simply WhatsApp us to arrange a collection time that suits you

Is my data safe during an Apple Watch repair?

Completely. Your Apple Watch data, health records, activity history, and paired iPhone connection all remain intact throughout the repair process. We do not factory reset your device unless it is absolutely required for a software repair — and if that is ever the case, we will tell you before we begin, not after. Your watch leaves our workshop exactly as it came in, just fixed
