Signs your Apple Watch needs a new battery
Apple Watch batteries are tiny lithium-polymer cells working harder than almost any battery in Apple's product line. Always-on display, GPS workouts, sleep tracking, and continuous heart-rate monitoring run them down 24 hours a day. Most Watches show clear battery wear after 2–3 years of normal use, sooner if you train heavily or use cellular constantly.
Won't last a full day
Used to make it to bedtime, now flat by lunch. The most common sign — capacity has dropped below ~70% and continues degrading.
Sudden shutdowns
Watch shows 30–50% battery, then dies without warning. Cell can no longer hold voltage under load — this is end-of-life behaviour.
Won't turn on
Plugs in but nothing happens, or just shows the empty battery icon and never boots. Often fixable with a battery replacement alone.
Drains rapidly during workouts
Loses 30–40% battery during a single GPS workout. Healthy Watch batteries shouldn't drop more than 10–15% per hour of GPS tracking.
Charges very slowly
Used to charge fully in 60–90 minutes, now takes 3+ hours. Combined with reduced runtime, this is a clear capacity-loss signal.
Screen lifting off the case
Caused by a swollen battery — this is urgent. Stop wearing your Watch immediately. See safety section below.
Swollen battery — stop using your Watch immediately
⚠️ This is a safety issue, not just an inconvenience
If your Apple Watch screen has started lifting off the case, the lithium-polymer battery underneath has expanded. Lithium cells in this state are unstable — heat exposure, impact, or further pressure can cause thermal runaway, which means fire. This is one of the few Apple Watch faults where you genuinely should not wait.
Stop wearing the Watch. Don't try to push the screen back down. Don't charge it. Get it to us.
What we'll do: open the case using non-spark-generating tools, safely extract the swollen cell, dispose of it through the proper hazardous-waste channel, fit a new OEM-grade battery, replace any damaged adhesive seal, and cold-press reseal the case. The repair is more involved than a standard battery swap, but it's a service we do regularly.
Most affected models: Apple Watch Series 0, 1, 2, 3 (Apple ran extended service programmes for Series 2 and 3 — those programmes have ended). Less common but still seen on Series 4, 5, 6 with age. Modern Watches are not immune — any Apple Watch with a battery older than 4–5 years is a candidate.
- Don't apply pressure to the lifted screen
- Don't expose to direct heat or sunlight
- Don't charge the device
- If you can, place it in a metal container away from flammable items until repair

How we replace your Apple Watch battery
Free diagnostic
We check your Maximum Capacity reading, run a discharge test under load, and rule out other causes (logic board, charging coil) before quoting.
Safe case opening
Specialist heat and lift tooling to open the case without flexing the screen flex cables. For swollen battery cases, we use non-spark techniques throughout.
Cell replacement
The original cell is disconnected, removed, and (if swollen) safely placed in a fire-rated container for hazardous-waste disposal. A new OEM-grade cell is fitted.
Cold-press reseal
Adhesive seal is replaced and the case cold-press resealed to restore water resistance as effectively as possible. Final QC test for charge cycle, runtime, and sensors.
Why iAssist for Apple Watch battery replacement
Swollen-battery specialists
Most repair shops refuse swollen battery jobs because of the safety risk and disposal requirement. We do them regularly with the proper tooling and waste channel.
OEM-grade cells, not aftermarket
We use OEM-spec cells with original-equivalent capacity and chemistry. Aftermarket cells are typically 10–20% lower capacity from day one and degrade faster.
Same-day on most models
Series 4 through Series 11 and SE family battery replacements are usually same-day. Ultra and current-generation models are typically next-day.
Cold-press resealing included
Adhesive seal replaced and cold-press cured to restore as much water resistance as practically possible after the case has been opened.
Check your Apple Watch battery health before booking
You can check your battery's Maximum Capacity directly on your Watch — useful before getting a quote. On your Apple Watch: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. The Maximum Capacity percentage shows what's left of the original capacity.
What the numbers mean:
- Above 85%: Healthy. Battery replacement not yet needed unless you have other symptoms (shutdowns, won't turn on).
- 80–85%: Mild wear. You may notice slightly shorter runtime. Replace within 6–12 months for best experience.
- 70–80%: Moderate wear. Battery replacement recommended. You're likely seeing noticeable drop-off in daily runtime.
- Below 70%: End-of-life. Random shutdowns and inability to make it through a day are normal at this point. Replace soon.
- Battery health unavailable / Service message: The Watch can't read the battery — either the cell has failed completely or there's a measurement-circuit fault. Bring it in for diagnosis.

Apple Watch battery replacement — frequently asked questions
How much does Apple Watch battery replacement cost?
Pricing depends on your model. Apple Watch Series 1/2/3 is R900. Series 4 is R1,100. Series 5 and SE 2/SE are R1,200. Series 6 is R1,300. Series 7/8/9 is R1,400. Series 10, Series 11, and SE 3 are R1,500. Apple Watch Ultra (all generations) is R1,800. We confirm exact pricing in writing after your free diagnostic.
How do I know if my Apple Watch needs a new battery?
The clearest sign is dropping runtime — used to make it to bedtime, now flat by lunch. Other signals: random shutdowns at 30–50% battery, very slow charging, won't turn on, or the screen lifting off the case (swollen battery). Check your Maximum Capacity on the Watch via Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Below 80% is meaningful wear; below 70% is end-of-life behaviour.
My Apple Watch screen is lifting off — is this fixable?
Yes, and it's important. A lifting screen means the battery underneath has swollen, which is a fire risk. Stop wearing the Watch immediately and don't try to push the screen back down. We safely remove and dispose of the swollen cell, fit a new OEM-grade battery, and reseal the case using cold-press equipment. Most repairs are completed in 24–48 hours. This is most common on Series 0, 1, 2, 3, but it appears on later models with age.
Will my Apple Watch still be water resistant after battery replacement?
Honest answer: any opened Apple Watch will have reduced water resistance compared to factory new — this matches Apple's own policy. After battery replacement we use professional cold-press adhesive equipment to reseal the watch as effectively as possible. Splashes, rain, and hand washing remain fine. We recommend avoiding swimming, surfing, hot tubs, and steam rooms post-repair.
How long does Apple Watch battery replacement take?
Series 4–11 and SE family battery replacements are typically same-day. Ultra models and current generation (Series 11, SE 3) are usually next-day depending on parts availability. Swollen battery cases take 24–48 hours due to additional safety procedures. For nationwide repairs via The Courier Guy, total turnaround is 2–3 working days door-to-door on overnight service, 5–7 working days on standard.
Are your replacement batteries OEM original?
We use OEM-grade cells — manufactured to original specification with the same chemistry, capacity, and safety circuitry as factory original. They are functionally identical to the cells Apple itself uses for warranty service. Aftermarket "compatible" cells (which we do not use) typically have 10–20% lower capacity from new and degrade significantly faster.
Will battery replacement reset my Watch or lose my data?
No. Battery replacement is a hardware-only repair — your watchOS, paired iPhone connection, activity history, health data, and all configurations remain intact. Your Watch will simply have a new cell. We do recommend backing up via your paired iPhone before any repair as standard precaution, but it's not strictly required.
Is it worth replacing the battery on an older Apple Watch?
For most models, yes. A new SE 3 starts at over R5,000. Battery replacement on a Series 4–7 is R1,100–R1,400 and gives you 2–3 more years of normal use. Series 1–3 at R900 is borderline — these models are losing watchOS support, so it depends on whether you mainly use it for fitness tracking (still works fine) or rely on app updates (limited future). We'll tell you honestly during the free diagnostic.
Do you offer a warranty on Apple Watch battery replacements?
Yes — all Apple Watch battery replacements at iAssist are covered by a 6-month warranty on parts and labour. If the new cell fails to hold capacity, fails to charge, or causes any battery-related issue within six months, we replace it at no charge.
Can you do Apple Watch battery replacement if I'm not in Gauteng?
Yes — we work with The Courier Guy for fully insured nationwide collection and delivery. After we send you a fixed-price quote, The Courier Guy collects from your door and delivers it back once repaired. You pay The Courier Guy directly at their current rate — choose between overnight or standard. Total turnaround is 2–3 working days for overnight, 5–7 working days for standard. Note: lithium batteries are restricted from air freight, so we use ground service by default.
