A Watch That Can't Finish the Walk Around Gray Park
James & Ethel Gray Park is 36 hectares of hilly grassland and trees on the edge of Melrose and Birdhaven, sloping down to the Sandspruit. It started out as a bird sanctuary, and the Melrose Bird Sanctuary with its dam is still inside the park. In 1946 it was named after James Gray, a historian, scientist and former mayor of Johannesburg, and his wife Ethel. Most people arrive at the parking area on North Street, near the circle where it meets St Andrews Street and Edgewood Avenue. The Acrobranch zipline course has its own entrance lower down.
The park is busy with dog walkers in the early morning and late afternoon, and its slopes make a good workout. That's also the kind of use that shows up a tired Apple Watch battery. With an outdoor walk or run recording, the watch uses GPS and takes frequent heart-rate readings for the whole loop. A healthy battery copes easily. A worn one drops sharply in a single session, then cuts out at 30% on the way back to the car, and your workout doesn't save.
Melrose itself goes back to 1893, when Henry Brown Marshall bought part of the old farm Syferfontein. The suburb was laid out in 1902. Today the name covers the older streets around the park as well as the Melrose Arch precinct. Is It the Battery? Three Checks Before You Book
A watch that doesn't last the day isn't always a battery fault. These checks help you tell.
- Look at Battery Health. On the watch, open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. Maximum Capacity shows how much of the original capacity is left. If it says "Service", the battery is worn out.
- Rule out your settings. Apple's own guide to an Apple Watch battery that drains too quickly lists the main drains: Always On display, cellular use away from your iPhone, weak signal, and GPS and heart-rate readings during outdoor workouts. If changing these fixes your battery life, you don't need a repair.
- Watch for the urgent signs. If the watch shuts down at 30 to 50%, won't switch on even on its charger, or the screen has started lifting away from the case, stop wearing it. A lifting screen usually means the battery has swollen, and you should bring it in quickly.

How We Replace an Apple Watch Battery
The full process is on our Apple Watch battery replacement page. In short: we start with a free diagnostic that checks Maximum Capacity, tests the battery under load and rules out the charging circuit or logic board as the real cause. Then we open the case with heat and lift tools so the screen cables aren't strained. We fit a new OEM-grade cell and replace the adhesive seal. The case is cold-press resealed, which restores as much water resistance as we can after opening. Last comes a final check of charging, runtime and sensors. If your battery has swollen, we remove it with non-spark methods and send it for hazardous-waste disposal.
Series 4 to Series 11 and SE batteries are usually done the same day. Ultra models and the newest generation are usually next-day.

Two Watches, Two Very Different Battery Jobs
Apple Watch Series 6 (2020)
The Apple Watch Series 6 was the first with the Blood Oxygen app, and most are now five or more years old and on their original battery. A battery replacement costs R1,300, usually done the same day. If the watch also stopped charging reliably, a charging repair on the Series 6 costs R1,100, and we'll tell you at the diagnostic which one it needs.
Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2023)
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has the biggest battery in the range - Apple rates it for up to 36 hours of normal use - so if it struggles to get through a long day of park walks and GPS workouts, the battery has usually worn badly. A replacement costs R1,800 and is usually done the next day.

From the North Street parking area, take Melrose Street to Atholl-Oaklands Road (M31). Turn onto Pretoria Street (M20), follow the M20 along Athol Street, then go east on Northfield Avenue (M40) into Silvamonte. It's about 6.5 km and usually takes 12 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic. From the older streets west of Corlett Drive, Glenhove Road (M20) to Pretoria Street is a similar distance. Use your map app for the last few turns to Swemmer Road.

My watch dies halfway through a walk in the park with a workout recording. Is that the battery?
Possibly. GPS and frequent heart-rate readings during an outdoor workout use a lot of power, but a healthy battery shouldn't lose more than 10 to 15% per hour of GPS tracking. Check Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. If Maximum Capacity is low, or the watch shuts down with charge still showing, the battery is the likely cause. The diagnostic is free.
